4. Matthew 19:1 Coasting along
Matthew 19:1 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan; [kjv]
και εγενετο οτε ετελεσεν ο ιησους τους λογους τουτους μετηρεν απο της γαλιλαιας και ηλθεν εις τα ορια της ιουδαιας περαν του ιορδανου [gnt]

Map: Judea and beyond Jordan
This is connecting commentary provided by Matthew. The "sayings" or "reasonings" that were finished were the subject of the end of Matthew 17 through the end of Matthew 18.

The ancient Greek word "ὅριον""bound, limit, region" as a diminutive of "ὅρος""bound, limit, region" while "ὄρος""mountain, hill, mountain chain, district".

The Middle English word "coste""side or edge of something, region of land".

5. Matthew 19:1 Context

The Greek words for "region" is similar to the Greek word for "mountain". The ancient Greek word "ὀριο""limit, boundary, border" and, in context, "coasts".

Mountain and definition

Note: The meaning is not determined by the breathing marks. The breathing marks were added to fit the decided meaning.

The Greek word for "mountain" and the Greek word for "definition" are the same (except for breathing marks that had disappeared by the time of Christ).

6. New Testament Greek: B. G. McClean
Book: New Testament Greek: An Introduction Book: Hellenistic and Biblical Greek: A Graduated Reader
Note that any play on word meanings would ignore any such artificial aspiration, such as "mountain" and "definition". Note: The meaning is not determined by the breathing marks. The breathing marks were added to fit the decided meaning.

7. Matthew 17:1 Disambiguation
Matthew 17:1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, [kjv]
και μεθ ημερας εξ παραλαμβανει ο ιησους τον πετρον και ιακωβον και ιωαννην τον αδελφον αυτου και αναφερει αυτους εις ορος υψηλον κατ ιδιαν [gnt]

If the context cannot by itself be used to determine whether the word refers to a "mountain" or a (flat) "region" or "coast", some context needs to be added to make the passage clear. Consider the following. Which meaning is to be used? Now add a disambiguating word. Which one of the meanings now fit? Which does not fit? What implications does this have for those who make a theological distinction about the "mountain" being "high"?

The KJV (King James Version) translates as "apart" the Greek word that means "by themselves".

Matthew 19:2 And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there. [kjv]
και ηκολουθησαν αυτω οχλοι πολλοι και εθεραπευσεν αυτους εκει [gnt]

Many and city Greek letter
The ancient Greek word "ὄχλος""multitude, crown" and may, through the Greek digamma, be related to the German word "Volk""people" as in "Volkswagen" and to the English word "folk".
The ancient Greek word "θεραπεύω""wait on, obey, flatter consult, cure, heal" and is the source of the English word "therapy". The primary meaning is that of attending to or waiting on and not of curing or healing.

και προσηλθαν προσηλθον αυτω φαρισαιοι πειραζοντες αυτον και λεγοντες ει εξεστιν απολυσαι την γυναικα αυτου κατα πασαν αιτιαν [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "αἰτία""cause, reason". Aristotle often used this word as "explanation". Each "cause" is a "why" question. Aristotle detailed four "causes" and used a "table" as an example.

The ancient Greek word "πειράζω""examine" and is often translated in the KJV as "tempt". This word is related to "πειρᾱτῶν""(of the) pirate, robber" (genitive) and comes from "πειρατής""pirate, robber" and is the source of the English word "pirate".

12. Peirastic
Book: Aristotle on False ReasoningOn page 2, Schreiber elaborates on "peirastic" reasoning as distinguished by Aristotle.
Aristotle's clarification of the word fits the "temptations" of Jesus in the Gospels. The ancient Greek word "πειράζω""examine" and is often translated in the KJV as "tempt". The modern idea of the Greek "temptation" is that of an interview where one examines someone about things they know or believe they know.

15. Matthew 19:1-10 Making room to be joined together
In Matthew 19, the Pharisees "examine" Jesus. Jesus answers.

Matthew 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, [kjv]
19:5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? [kjv]
19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. [kjv]

Do you know any people (e.g., some pastors) who refuse to admit that they do not know something? They apparently have "read" and "understood" everything.

The ideas is some of these verses were covered by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.

16. Matthew 19:4 Created male and female

ο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν ουκ ανεγνωτε οτι ο κτισας απ αρχης αρσεν και θηλυ εποιησεν αυτους [gnt]

The TR (Textus Receptus) uses the word "made". The Greek word is that of "having created" (a created creature). Greek: ... that the creator from beginning male and female made them.

Male or Female Yes or no
The genders of "male" and "female" are digital "yes" or "no" values with no in-between values.

17. DNA
DNA bases One chain Two chains DNA code
Three nucleotides combine, 4 bits each, for 4*4*4 = 64 instructions in the digital code of life. Three nucleotides represent one amino acid (of twenty for humans), with start and stop codes and limited error detection/correction.
Each person has DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) consisting of about 6 billion bits of digital information. Each person has about 1 trillion cells each with a copy of that information. What is called gender change produces superficial changes in appearance but does not change the underlying DNA. The genders of "male" and "female" are digital "yes" or "no" values with no in-between values.

Jesus makes many statements about "male" and "female", etc., all carefully worded (in the Greek) to have multiple meanings.

Analogy Jesus is the groom as the church is the bride
One must be careful not to take the literal analogy too far. [general revelation]

Example: If the man can put away the woman for any reason, then Jesus (as God) can put away the church (and church members) for any reason.

4 generations
Some in the culture have trouble determining the difference between "male" and "female".
In the beginning, the gene pool was not contaminated. Mutations after that could, in certain cases, muddy the waters. Note that in order to answer a question, Jesus (and others) must "discern" (not judge in a judicial sense) since that Greek word is the root word of the word for "answer".

24. Matthew 19:5 Glued together

και ειπεν ενεκα τουτου καταλειψει ανθρωπος τον πατερα και την μητερα και κολληθησεται τη γυναικι αυτου και εσονται οι δυο εις σαρκα μιαν [gnt]

The English word "cleave" comes from the Middle English word "cleven""cleave, split" but could mean "adhere", "cling", "stick fast", etc. The English word "protocol" means, literally, "first" "glue". It's hard to "adhere" if you dont' have a "glue".

Elmer's Glue-All
The ancient Greek word "κόλλα""glue, flower paste". The KJV translates as "cleave" the Greek word that means "joined" as in "glued". Some use the English word "cling" for "cleave". Barnabas makes the observation that one should not be "glued" to "sinners". Some translators, having the effect of providing reasons not to accept Barnabas, translate the word "glued" as "associate".

25. Barnabas: Behavior of birds
English: Neither shall you eat the eagle or the hawk or the kite or the crow. You must not, he means, associate or even resemble such people, who do not know how to provide food for themselves by labor and sweat but lawlessly plunder other people's property; indeed, though they walk about with the appearance of innocence, they are carefully watching and looking around for someone to rob in their greed, just as these birds alone do not provide food for themselves but sit idle and look for ways to eat the flesh of others - they are nothing more than pests in their wickedness. (10.4, Holmes, p. 411)
Barnabas makes the case that the Jews changed the "moral" laws given by God to Moses into "dietary" laws to circumvent what God wanted. The word "associate" is the Greek word for "glued to" or "joined together", the same word Jesus uses for husband and wife becoming "one flesh".

BirdThe ancient Greek word "κόλλα""glue, flower paste". The translation is that one should not "associate" with such people. The Greek is that of "glue yourself" to such people.

Walk stand sit Slippery slope
Psalms 1 presents an interesting bottom-up forward-chaining progression of the toleration and acceptance of sin. It is a slippery slope.
From the "not" and "nor", there are three ways to avoid. Barnabas makes these connections but Jesus uses each of "fish", "pigs", "birds" and "sheep" (and others) in corresponding roles.

The word for "walked" is the same word that is translated as "go" in the mandate of the Great Commission.

The "one" may have a special meaning as, reflexively, "you" by way of the one cookie rule. The ancient Greek word "χωρίζω""separate, divide, distinguish" and is the source of the English word "horizen" and is related to the Greek word for "mountain". The Greek word is from "χωρίς""separately, differently" or, as a preposition, "without" or "otherwise".

The Greek word for "joined" is that of, literally, "together yoked". The Greek word for "yoked" is, literally, "two going (together)".

Discuss: What might be the connection between these two ideas? That was the subject of the previous discourse in Matthew 18.

The Greek word for "asunder" is from and has the Greek word for "mountain" in it. The example used in the previous chapter was of a "sheep" going "on" the "mountain" or "definition" to be "great".

λεγουσιν αυτω τι ουν μωυσης ενετειλατο δουναι βιβλιον αποστασιου και απολυσαι [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "βιβλίον""scroll, book" and is a diminutive of the ancient Greek word "βίβλος""scroll, book".

The TR adds "her" but Jesus leaves one to infer that meaning so that the ambiguity leaves open additional meanings.

Discuss:

37. Matthew 19:8 Hardness of divorce
Matthew 19:8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. [kjv]
λεγει αυτοις οτι μωυσης προς την σκληροκαρδιαν υμων επετρεψεν υμιν απολυσαι τας γυναικας υμων απ αρχης δε ου γεγονεν ουτως [gnt]

The Greek for "hardness of the heart" is one word in Greek. The ancient Greek word "σκληρός""hard, harsh" as in a "hard" heart and is the source of the English word "arteriosclerosis" as a "hardening of the arteries".

The ancient Greek word "γυναίκα""woman, wife". Ambiguity: Does each religious leader have one wife or many wives (i.e., gods or idols)?

40. Matthew 19:9 If not
Matthew 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. [kjv]
λεγω δε υμιν οτι ος αν απολυση την γυναικα αυτου μη επι πορνεια και γαμηση αλλην μοιχαται [gnt]

If not and I am

The TR adds "if". Just the "not" is in the Greek. Thus, Jesus is not actually saying "if" "not" so there is no play on words here.

Discuss: Can the religious establishment commit "fornication" and "commit adultery" and, in effect, "marry" "another"? Have they then, in effect, written their own "writing" of "divorcement"?

41. Matthew 5:27-28 Overview
Matthew 5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: [kjv]
5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. [kjv]

Passive Passive
[He's looking at me! Bad jokes.]

[One direction point of view: man to woman]
Passive adultery can (with high probability) move to active adultery. [making crude comments in a humerus way]. Initiating active adultery (without overt force) involves seduction, deception, entrapment, etc.

This verse is from the man's point of view (e.g., groom, Jesus, God). The next verse requires one to switch to the woman's point of view (e.g., bride, Church, Israel).

Matthew 5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. [kjv]
ει δε ο οφθαλμος σου ο δεξιος σκανδαλιζει σε εξελε αυτον και βαλε απο σου συμφερει γαρ σοι ινα αποληται εν των μελων σου και μη ολον το σωμα σου βληθη εις γεενναν [gnt]

Active Active

The "right" "eye", or "but a shadow of" the "bird" "leader" is "plucked out".
The "right" "hand", or "but a shadow of" the "big" "enforcer" is "cut off".

Another reaction is to allow or accept such advances.

44. Fornication and divorce
Matthew 5:31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: [kjv]
ερρεθη δε ος αν απολυση την γυναικα αυτου δοτω αυτη αποστασιον [gnt]
5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. [kjv]
εγω δε λεγω υμιν οτι πας ο απολυων την γυναικα αυτου παρεκτος λογου πορνειας ποιει αυτην μοιχευθηναι και και ος εαν απολελυμενην γαμηση μοιχαται [gnt]

Here is a summary build of the progression. The verse structure is as follows.

Matthew 5:27-32: adultery/separation
Verse groups:

46. Matthew 19:9 But I say unto you
Matthew 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. [kjv]
λεγω δε υμιν οτι ος αν απολυση την γυναικα αυτου μη επι πορνεια και γαμηση αλλην μοιχαται [gnt]

The "I say unto you" appears to, in most if not all places, indicate that the next statement has a more literal meaning and another meaning that is the intended meaning. The Greek word for "fornication", as used by Jesus, has a more general meaning.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus phrased it as the "reasoning" of "fornication". In this context, responding to a direct question of the religious elite, it is just "fornication". Jesus is speaking to those who would be the primary ones to use the "reasoning" of "fornication".

47. Matthew 19:9
   Matthew 19:9
 All
KJV: And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
Greek: λεγω δε υμιν οτι ος αν απολυση την γυναικα αυτου ει μη επι πορνεια και γαμηση αλλην μοιχαται και ο απολελυμενην γαμησας μοιχαται

48. Matthew 19:10
Matthew 19:10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. [kjv]
λεγουσιν αυτω οι μαθηται ει ουτως εστιν η αιτια του ανθρωπου μετα της γυναικος ου συμφερει γαμησαι [gnt]

When the disciples do not really understand what Jesus is saying, they tend to ask somewhat strange questions that Jesus then answers.

The KJV translates as "good" the Greek word that means "bring together" and is an example of a counter-factual question. The disciples are asking a question based on the perceived literal meaning of (part of) what Jesus said.

When the disciples ask questions but do not really understand the true meaning, Jesus often provides some enigmatic answers (next verse).

52. Matthew 19:11-15 Make room for a good mind to suffer the children
Matthew 19:10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. [kjv]
