Matthew 24:8-14 Beginning of sorrows
by RS  admin@creationpie.org : 1024 x 640

1. Matthew 24:8-14 Beginning of sorrows
Verse routeMatthew 24:8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. [kjv]
Verse routeπαντα δε ταυτα αρχη ωδινων [gnt]

The "all", with "these" inferred, refers to what has just been listed either directly or indirectly (e.g., via play on words).

Foot ruler - yellow

This is just the "beginning". The ancient Greek word "ἀρχή""beginning, origin, sovereignty, authority" and could be the end of a rope, stick, etc., or the corner of a sheet. In context, it could be a "rule". To accurately "measure" with a "ruler" you need to persistently stick to it.

The ancient Greek word "ὠδίς""birth pains, travail, anguish".

2. Strongs - birth pains
*G5604 *4 ὠδίν (o-deen') : akin to G3601; a pang or throe, especially of childbirth:--pain, sorrow, travail.
Word usage per chapter Words: ωδιν ωδινας ωδινων=2

The ancient Greek word "ὠδίς""birth pains, travail, anguish".

3. Usage - birth pains

4. Matthew 24:8
   Matthew 24:8
 All
KJV: All these are the beginning of sorrows.
Greek: παντα δε ταυτα αρχη ωδινων

5. Matthew 15:2 Traditions
Verse routeMatthew 15:2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. [kjv]
Verse routeδια τι οι μαθηται σου παραβαινουσιν την παραδοσιν των πρεσβυτερων ου γαρ νιπτονται τας χειρας οταν αρτον εσθιωσιν [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "παράδοσις""transmission, transfer" and comes from two Greek words. In context, it can mean "tradition" as something "transmitted" or "handed over" from generation to generation as in "beyond" the current generation.

The "traditions" of men that form man's additions to God's law is what Jesus refers to as "jots" as "opinions" or "spots" and "tittles" as "horns" or "rules". These are usually enforced, deceptively, using "oaths".

6. Matthew 24:9 Traditional delivering
Verse routeMatthew 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. [kjv]
Verse routeτοτε παραδωσουσιν υμας εις θλιψιν και αποκτενουσιν υμας και εσεσθε μισουμενοι υπο παντων των εθνων δια το ονομα μου [gnt]

Who will do the "delivering" or "turning over" or "betraying" (same word in Greek)? The Latin word "trado""hand over, betray" (verb) and is the source, through French, of the English word "traitor" (noun). The Greek word translated as "nations" is that of "peoples". Great "persecution" and "hatred" will result.

7. Strongs - kill
*G615 *71 ἀποκτείνω (ap-ok-ti'-no) : from G575 and kteino (to slay); to kill outright; figuratively, to destroy:--put to death, kill, slay.

The ancient Greek word "ἀποκτείνω""kill, slay" and can be figurative instead of a physical action.

8. Matthew 24:9 Affliction pressure of tribulation

Pressure
The ancient Greek word "θλῖψις""pressure" and, figuratively, "oppression", "affliction", etc. Might this include peer "pressure"? [without peer, heron birds]
The Latin word "tribulare""press, thresh" and is the source, through French, of the English word "tribulation".

Can we then relate "pressure", "affliction", "oppression" and "tribulation", from the Latin word for "pressure"?

9. Matthew 24:9 Affliction pressure of tribulation

The figurative meaning of "θλῖψις""pressure" is the same as the literal meaning of the ancient Greek word "πονηρός""oppressed by toils" and which comes from the ancient Greek word "πονέω""to toil, labor". Think "oppression", including "oppressing" oneself, and which comes from wanting to be "great" (at the expense of others, or yourself). This is the word often translated as "evil".

Thus, "evil" and "tribulation" and "affliction" have related meanings.

10. Matthew 24:9 Kill

The ancient Greek word "ἀποκτείνω""kill, slay" and can be figurative instead of a physical action. When Jesus uses the word "kill" in this verse, which of the following is intended? Which of these is to be "feared"? Is there another way to look at the meaning of this verse?

Can your "soul" be "pressured" through "deception"? How about "tradition"? How about through "rewards"?

11. Matthew 10:28 Soul and body
Verse routeMatthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι μη φοβεισθε απο των αποκτεινοντων το σωμα την δε ψυχην μη δυναμενων αποκτειναι φοβεισθε δε μαλλον τον δυναμενον και ψυχην και σωμα απολεσαι εν γεεννη [gnt]

Jesus tells us that the "body" and the "soul" are different. Jesus tells us who we should "fear" and it is not "fear" about the cares and concerns of this world. The most dangerous attacks are not from the outside but from the inside and involve deception.

One cannot "destroy the soul" by "killing" the body is in persecution (e.g., by the Roman administrations). The primary way to "destroy" the "soul" is through deception so that you "sell yourself out" or are "sold out".

Jesus provides an example in the next verse.

12. Matthew 10:29-31 Soul and body
Verse routeMatthew 10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. [kjv]
Verse routeουχι δυο στρουθια ασσαριου πωλειται και εν εξ αυτων ου πεσειται επι την γην ανευ του πατρος υμων [gnt]
Verse route10:30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. [kjv]
Verse routeυμων δε και αι τριχες της κεφαλης πασαι ηριθμημεναι εισιν [gnt]
Verse route10:31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. [kjv]

13. Matthew 24:9 Alternate paraphrase

Alternate paraphrase (using Greek meanings and play on words): Then shall they tradition (hand over) you into (peer and deceptive) pressure (affliction) and shall kill you (your soul, through deception) and you shall be hatefully rewarded under all those peoples through the (deceptive use of) my name.

14. Matthew 5:9 B7 Making and appeasing peaceful peacemakers
Verse routeMatthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [kjv]

Verse routeκαι τοτε σκανδαλισθησονται πολλοι και αλληλους παραδωσουσιν και μισησουσιν αλληλους [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "σκάνδαλον""trap, snare" as in entice, tempt, etc. The KJV (King James Version) often translates this as "offended" the Greek word that means to "entrap".

How might these be "entrapped"?

17. Star Wars trap
Snare/trap and sandal Backpack

The famous ambush line from Star Wars by Admiral Ackbar is "It's a trap!". For backpacks, "It's a strap!".

The ancient Greek word "σκάνδαλον""trap, snare" as in entice, tempt, etc. The KJV often translates this as "offended" the Greek word that means to "entrap".

A deception may not be detected until it is too late. A con or confidence artist gets ones' confidence and then springs the trap.

A false prophet may deceive with "idle words" which are words that do not work for Christ. Do pastors do this when they mislead or waste time in a sermon rather than preaching words that work for Christ?

18. Sandals and scandal
Snare/trap and sandal Greek letter

In the Greek, the word for "snare" or "trap" is the same as the Greek word for "sandal" except for a Greek "κ" (kappa). How might a "shoe" relate to "entrapment"?

How might a "sandal", is in the book of Ruth, be related to an "oath"?

Snare/trap and sandal
Many will be "entrapped" or "ensnared" to "betray" one another and "hate" one another.

21. Matthew 24:9-10 Deliver the betrayal
Verse routeMatthew 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. [kjv]

Verse routeκαι τοτε σκανδαλισθησονται πολλοι και αλληλους παραδωσουσιν και μισησουσιν αλληλους [gnt]

The "betray" in this verse is the exact same Greek word as "deliver" in the previous verse. The Latin uses the same word in both verses.

22. Matthew 24:10 Play on words
Verse routeMatthew 24:10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. [kjv]

What is a "false prophet"? How is "deception" done? The Greek word translated as "rise" is that of "awaken" or "stand up" or, in context, "resurrect" and is the same word used earlier in the discourse. Are these related?

Verse routeMatthew 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι δια το πληθυνθηναι την ανομιαν ψυγησεται η αγαπη των πολλων [gnt]

Wind and iniquity
The word for "iniquity" means a change (opposite) of traditional laws and customs. The Greek word is, literally, "against the law". It is a play on words with "wind".
Which laws?

27. Matthew 10:42 Cold cup to drink
Verse routeMatthew 10:42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι ος αν ποτιση ενα των μικρων τουτων ποτηριον ψυχρου μονον εις ονομα μαθητου αμην λεγω υμιν ου μη απολεση τον μισθον αυτου [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "ψυχρός""cold, frigid, cold-hearted". A figurative meaning is that of "ineffectual". Could this be a play on words with "life"? A modern day English idiom is that of giving someone a "douse of cold water" as in a "taste of reality". The Greek word for "truth" is that of "reality" as in not "oblivion". This is not the same as trying to walk through "sinking" "sands".

Verse routeκαι ος αν ποτιση ενα των μικρων τουτων ποτηριον ψυχρου μονον εις ονομα μαθητου αμην λεγω υμιν ου μη απολεση τον μισθον αυτου [gnt]

The Greek word for "cold" can be a play on words with the Greek word for "life". If the "water" is "cold" enough, as in "freezing" "cold", than one can walk on "water". Oh, I see (icy). In that case, the "truth" will make you "freeze".

Verse routeκαι δια το πληθυνθηναι την ανομιαν ψυγησεται η αγαπη των πολλων [gnt]

Heart
The ancient Greek word "αγάπη""totally devoted to, love" from which we get the word "agape".
What does Jesus mean in this verse by "love"?

30. Strongs - grow cold
*G5594 *1 ψύχω (psoo'-kho) : a primary verb; to breathe (voluntarily but gently, thus differing on the one hand from G4154, which denotes properly a forcible respiration; and on the other from the base of G109, which refers properly to an inanimate breeze), i.e. (by implication, of reduction of temperature by evaporation) to chill (figuratively):--wax cold.
Word usage per chapter Words: ψυγησεται=1

Hot or cold or else
Since this word is used one time in the GNT (Greek New Testament), and by Jesus, it may be a play on words. It could not be found elsewhere.

Verse routeMatthew 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. [kjv]
Verse routeο δε υπομεινας εις τελος ουτος σωθησεται [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "τέλος""end, purpose, complete". The ancient Greek word "εις""into".

Paraphrase: But he that shall endure into the purpose, the same shall be saved.

That is, one does not need to endure to the "end" of time or "end" of the age or "end" of life. One needs to endure "into" the "purpose". To do that, one needs to insure that one knows the correct "goal" or "purpose" "into" which to "endure".

The "purpose" is similar to the idea of a "goal" or "postcondition" or "result" of "running" the "code" with "data" in computer science.

The Greek word for "endure" is sometimes translated as "patient" and is related to the word for "abide" or "remain".
