Unlike some other verses that use "
as" for an
analogy, there is
no "
as" in this verse. Can Jesus or God be called a
"thief" or
"deceitful person"? The ancient Greek word
"κλέπτης" ≈ "thief, deceitful person" as in the first part of the English word
"kleptomaniac".
"ὀρύσσω" ≈ "dig" and "διορύσσω" ≈ "dig a canal/tunnel".
"φυλακή" ≈ "watch, prison" and, as used by Jesus, the "sanctuary" and/or "altar".
In all of the first
six times in Matthew that Jesus uses the word translated
"householder" it appears to clearly refer to Jesus as God. Jesus uses words consistently. Humans, however, tend to change the meaning based on their personal opinion.
How does the meaning of this verse change if
"householder" is not translated as the popular and traditional opinion of a "
believer" running his own
"house" and, instead, is interpreted as meaning Jesus as God? Does this conflict with any long-held beliefs.

"digging" a "

Rather, he uses "watch" which could be a time of the night, a prison (in context), there is a better Greek word for prison, or, as often used by Jesus, the sanctuary used by the religious elite to oppress the believers.

Paul has no problem here meting out specific rules for the women. Perhaps Paul did not write 1 Timothy. As often happens is such cases, the Greek words may not be meaningful so that the meanings need to be adapted to something more meaningful.

"χάριν" ≈ "favor, purpose, joy" has been discussed at length elsewhere. It does not appear to have been translated.
The ancient Greek word
"ἀντίκειμαι" ≈ "opposite, contrast" and comes from two parts meaning, literally "
in place of" and "
placed" or "
situated". The context determines if the meaning is that of "
opposite" (two choices) or that of just a "
contrast" (more than two choices).
The modern Greek word
"αντικείμενο" (an-tee-KEE-meh-no) ≈ "object, subject" as in a physical object, a grammar object, a computing object, etc., that is used "
in place" of the actual object. The prefix
"ἀντῐ" ≈ "in place of" as in instead of. When there are two choices, the other choice is the one
"opposite" or "
against".
