SM 0 Sermon on the Mount: The Musical

Here is the traditional coverage of the Sermon on the Mount. Start at the beginning and continue. Most verse or verse groups can have their own ARMS (Attractive Refrigerator Magnet Sermons).

This is the case, for example, with the "Sermon on the Mount: The Musical" as performed by Piercing Word.

[spread spectrum communication]

Here are some more connections in the Sermon on the Mount. The 103 verses that form the body of the Sermon on the Mount form six sequences of seven ideas that match rather well the Kingdom Parables and the Seven Churches in Revelation. Some sequences are top-down backward-chaining while others are bottom-up forward-chaining.

Tetractys 2 Tetractys 4 Line 4

The tetractys is a triangular arrangement of ten points. The ancient Greek word "τετρακτύς""tetractys" and is also called the tetractys of the decad. A layout of bowling pins is in the shape of a tetractys.

The modern Greek word "τετρακτύς" (teh-tra-KTEES) ≈ "tetractys",

This pattern and number was considered special (mystical) by Pythagoras and his followers for their "secret" worship.

There are many interesting historical and geometrical properties of the tetractys.

17. Matthew 5:1-2 Sermon on the mount audience
Matthew 5, 6, 7: Sermon on the Mount (111 verses)
Verse routeMatthew 5:1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: [kjv]
Verse routeιδων δε τους οχλους ανεβη εις το ορος και καθισαντος αυτου προσηλθαν αυτω οι μαθηται αυτου [gnt]

GroupsJesus addresses the disciples as believers directly. Pastors often preach as if the Sermon on the Mount (the Beatitudes, etc.) was to a large crowd and applies to everyone in the crowd. Some raise doubt that this was on a mountain. Some suggest a field with the rest of the crowd.

Is this actually the case?

18. Matthew 5: A eulogy of some blessed words on being blissfully happy
Each of the Beatitudes in Matthew 5 start with the word "blessed". What does it mean to say someone is "blessed"?

Whisper chain happy to blessedThe Latin word "beati""happy, fortunate, blessed" and is the origin of the English word "beatitude" and the name of the "Beatitudes". Latin has one word as "fortunate" for which Greek has two separate words:
Observation: It is easier for a priest, pastor, etc., to wave their hands and "bless" you than to actually make you "happy".
Conflate of bless with blissIn English, both words are merged as one "blessed" and, historically, conflated with the word "bliss" which is associated with "joy".

19. Matthew 5:3 The good news about being poor in spirit
This content looks at the first Beatitude in Matthew 5 which goes as follows.
Verse routeMatthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]
Verse routeμακαριοι οι πτωχοι τω πνευματι οτι αυτων εστιν η βασιλεια των ουρανων [gnt]
Verse routebeati pauperes spirituregnum caelorum [v]

Greek has (at least) two words for "poor". There is some overlap. Latin uses one word for both Greek words, losing important distinctions.

Verse routeμακαριοι οι πενθουντες οτι αυτοι παρακληθησονται [gnt]
Verse routebeati qui lugent quoniam ipsi consolabuntur [v]

The important words in this second Beatitude in Matthew 5 are the following. The first Beatitude is in the present tense. The second (here) and the others are in the future tense. This might be important.

The Latin word "lugeo""mourn, lament".

21. Matthew 5:5 Grounds for meekly inheriting humble pie

Verse routeμακαριοι οι πραεις οτι αυτοι κληρονομησουσιν την γην [gnt]
Verse routebeati mitespossidebunt terram [v]

The important word here are the following: "blessed", "meek", "inherit", "earth".

Whatever "meek" means, both Jesus and Moses are described as "meek". The Latin Vulgate and Wycliffe (and Wessex Gospels) switch the verses for "mourn" and "meek". This has been adjusted in the verses as used.

Information sign More: Matthew 5:5 Grounds for meekly inheriting humble pie

22. Matthew 5:6 The righteous type of appetite with which to be gardenized
Verse routeMatthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. [kjv]
Verse routeμακαριοι οι πεινωντες και διψωντες την δικαιοσυνην οτι αυτοι χορτασθησονται [gnt]
Verse routebeati qui esuriunt et sitiunt iustitiam quoniam ipsi saturabuntur [v]

The important word here are: "blessed" (happy), "hunger", "thirst", "righteousness", "filled" (satisfied).

To what "righteousness" does the verse refer? Can one be "satisfied" in either (or both) ways?

23. Matthew 5:7 Mercy me, full of mercy, mercy me
Verse routeMatthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. [kjv]
Verse routeμακαριοι οι ελεημονες οτι αυτοι ελεηθησονται [gnt]
Verse routebeati misericordesmisericordiam … [v]

The phrase "mercy me", or more emphatically, "mercy mercy me", is an expression of surprise or alarm. It is also the name of a contemporary Christian music group. The French word "merci""thank you" is not related to "mercy".

What about "mercy" in the Bible in general and in the GNT (Greek New Testament) in particular?

We do not just want to ask Alexa (a computer voice interface) for a definition (as one pastor did on 2021-02-07 as the basis for his sermon).

24. Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart
Verse routeMatthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. [kjv]
Verse routeμακαριοι οι καθαροι τη καρδια οτι αυτοι τον θεον οψονται [gnt]
Verse routebeati mundo cordevidebunt [v]

Ivory Soap is 99.44% pure and it floats! That specific number appears to have resulted due to a rounding error in calculations that was then adopted as part of a marketing slogan. [chaos theory]
In the Beatitudes, Jesus talks about the "pure" or "clean" in "heart" and "seeing" God. It appears that "pure" in "heart" refers to not having any ulterior motives used to do "evil" as in "oppress" others.

The important words are "blessed", "pure", "heart" and "see"

This should be answered in the sense of the Beatitudes and not in a general or otherwise sense.

26. Matthew 11:5-6 Bottom-up forward-chaining
Message of Jesus to John the Baptist (in physical prison):
Verse routeMatthew 11:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. [kjv]

Six noun‑verb pairs decoded
6. poor=fallenbeggars start gospel=good news preached
5. dead=asleep then raised=wake up you deadhead
4. deaf=not listening then hear=listen and understand repent
3. lepers=sinners then cleansed=be born againcleansed in the blood Ask
2. lame=passive then walk=active start walking in righteousness Seek
1. blind=not seeing then sight=look up/ahead and see God & others Knock
The top-down verses (in English) may be more understandable as a bottom-up progression (as events unfold in time) using the Greek meanings of the words. Approaches to change: (stop, repent, be cleansed and walk).

30. Matthew 5:15 Review
Verse routeMatthew 5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. [kjv]
Verse routeουδε καιουσιν λυχνον και τιθεασιν αυτον υπο τον μοδιον αλλ επι την λυχνιαν και λαμπει πασιν τοις εν τη οικια [gnt]

Paraphrase: ... neither is a candle (kingdom, opinion, glory, etc.) put under a measure (for objective evaluation) but on a [voting] platform to provide (false) light (darkness) to all (the many, the city) who are in that house (built on sand).

BirdThat "house" built on "sand" (end of the Sermon on the Mount) will be "cut off" and the "many" (who need the real Good News) will "fall" (same base word in Greek).

Note: In Greek the space between "and" and "being" or "is" appears to have been removed/ignored to make a questionable translation to "light" as in "ignite" to justify the desired translation.

The abstract "measure" as in an "objective measure" was changed to the more concrete "basket" or "bushel".

"Lighting" "light" with "light" is a reflexive process.

14: You are the light of the world. If the light is false light, how shall the light be lighted (fish). If you use false light, it is no better than the many who make a city on a man-made mountain and have false salt (fruit or works). That false light and false salt (fruit or works) cannot be hid and the many cannot remain/abide there.

32. Matthew 5:13 Review
Verse routeMatthew 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. [kjv]
Verse routeυμεις εστε το αλας της γης εαν δε το αλας μωρανθη εν τινι αλισθησεται εις ουδεν ισχυει ετι ει μη βληθεν εξω καταπατεισθαι υπο των ανθρωπων [gnt]

pigs Pig sheep Sheep
bad salt
black pearls

Paraphrase: You are the salt/fruit/harvest of the earth. But if the salt/fruit/harvest is a bad bloom, how will it be salted? It is not effective. But if it is not thrown out (cut off), it is (you are) trodden down by men (pigs as bad salt).
The "pigs" are recruited to be "leaders" and "influence" others to achieve the goals of the "birds".

33. ARMS paraphrase
Here is as ARMS (tongue-in-cheek) paraphrase. Think Monty Python.

You are the refrigerator magnet sermons of the earth. But if the refrigerator magnet sermon is not attractive, how will it stay on the refrigerator? It is not worth it's salt. But if it is not thrown out, it will fall off the refrigerator and be trodden down by others, perhaps causing men to slip and have a great fall (like the house built on attractive but not solid sand).

Advice: Before you pick up those refrigerator magnet sermons off the floor, make sure they are not bird droppings.

34. Matthew 5:10-12 Persecuted for righteousness sake 2
Verse routeMatthew 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. [kjv]
Verse route5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. [kjv]
Verse route5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]

Jesus appears to use a top-down presentation right before and during the "salt" verses. Let us go backwards for the three verses before the "salt" verse. One similarity in verses 12, 11 and 10 is the Greek word for "pursue" that is translated as "persecution". The focus in the "salt" verse is usually that of "walked on" or "trampled". What meaning might the "walking" as "pursuing" or "persecution" have in the "salt" verse?

35. Matthew 5:17 Leave the light on
Verse routeMatthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. [kjv]

Paraphrase: Do not Think (law wise) that I came to reside (make a nest as a bird) in the law or the prophets (like a bird in a nest). I came not to reside but to complete (which may require taking some things away). The next verse helps answer these questions.

Information sign More: Matthew 5:17 Leave the light on but do not use the law as a residence inn

36. Matthew 5:18 Paraphrase
Verse routeMatthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. [kjv]

Paraphrase: It is so that until heaven and earth pass by, not one jot (spots, blemishes, empty opinion) nor one tittle (horns, invalid logic, extra rules) will pass by from man's viewpoint (but all will pass by from God's viewpoint) until all (the new heaven and new earth) come into being.

Man's added lawsWill the religious establishment be upset if you try to remove any "jots" (blemishes, personal opinions, etc.) or "tittles" (extra rules, invalid logic, etc.) that are used to oppress the faithful and support their (false) house (nest and belly)?
How might the religious establishment react? What might they do?

Jesus addresses this in the next two verses (and thereafter).

37. Matthew 5:19 Birdhouse rules
Verse routeMatthew 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]

As in the "peacemaker" verse, 10 verses earlier, Jesus does not say who it is who is doing the "calling". The paraphrase fits any human organization. This meaning does not necessarily make the traditional interpretation invalid.

Bird house
Paraphrase: Whoever breaks the least of the rules established by the bird for the birdhouse, and teaches others in that birdhouse to do so, will be called least in that birdhouse. But whoever does and teaches those rules shall be called great in the birdhouse.

To "preach" or "teach" in the birdhouse, one must espouse the views or "righteousness", not of God or Jesus, but of the lead bird. Saying: You'll be birdseed.

[good and bad salt, good and bad light, good and bad houses]

38. Matthew 5:20 Righteous birds
Verse routeMatthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]
Verse routeλεγω γαρ υμιν οτι εαν μη περισσευση υμων η δικαιοσυνη πλειον των γραμματεων και φαρισαιων ου μη εισελθητε εις την βασιλειαν των ουρανων [gnt]

Unlike an earlier verse, there is no "amen" or "verily" or even "blessed" starting this verse. The "righteousness" can be God's "righteousness" or man's "righteousness" (or both). Context is important.
Paraphrase: Except your righteousness (as defined by the birds) exceeds the righteousness of those birds, you shall not enter and/or be promoted as a member of that birdhouse.

Note that this alternate meaning does not make the traditional interpretation invalid.

[good and bad salt, good and bad light, good and bad houses]

39. Matthew 7:21-23 Sermon on the Mount before the summary
Verse routeMatthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. [kjv]
Verse route7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? [kjv]
Verse route7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. [kjv]

The verses for the "houses" built on "rock" and on "sand" follow which end the Sermon on the Mount. If one is not of God, can one actually "cast out" "devils" since that would "divide" the "house" (built on sand)? The Greek word for "profess" is that of "agree" as in "same reasoning" and often translated as "confess".

House on sand words
Do you see any connection to the following?

41. Matthew 7:25,27 House built on sand
House on rock of Christ:
Verse routeMatthew 7:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι κατεβη η βροχη και ηλθαν οι ποταμοι και επνευσαν οι ανεμοι και προσεπεσαν τη οικια εκεινη και ουκ επεσεν τεθεμελιωτο γαρ επι την πετραν [gnt]

House on sand of man:
Verse route7:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι κατεβη η βροχη και ηλθαν οι ποταμοι και επνευσαν οι ανεμοι και προσεκοψαν τη οικια εκεινη και επεσεν και ην η πτωσις αυτης μεγαλη [gnt]

The "rain", "rivers" and "wind" "falls" on the "house" built on the "rock". However, the "rain", "rivers" and "wind" "cut off" (different word) the "house" built on "sand". The ancient Greek word "προσκόπτω""cut towards/off". The "house" is "cut off". Perhaps they "cut off" themselves as in separating themselves from the love of Christ - as the lost sheep that goes on the mountain.

42. Matthew 7:27 House built on sand
Verse routeMatthew 7:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι κατεβη η βροχη και ηλθαν οι ποταμοι και επνευσαν οι ανεμοι και προσεκοψαν τη οικια εκεινη και επεσεν και ην η πτωσις αυτης μεγαλη [gnt]

The "house" built on "rock" does not "fall". However, the "house" built on "sand" is "cut off" and has a "great" (size or number) "fall". The ancient Greek word "πτῶσις""falling" and, in grammar, is a case or inflection. The ancient Greek word "πίπτω""fall". A related word is "πτωχός""beggar" and means, literally, one who has fallen. Jesus often refers to the "poor" as those who are "fallen" and need the "Gospel" or "Good News" which is the source of the English word "evangelical".

Might there be a play on words of the "great" "fall" with the "many" or "city" in the (false) "house" on the "mountain" following the (false) "light" who need the "Good News" but, due to "birds" and "pigs" (who work for the "birds") get "cut off" and never got to hear (or were misled about) that "Good News"?

43. Rock and sand
Rock and sandBuild your house on the granite rock of Jesus and not on the human sand (or stones) of man, Matthew 7:24-27. Sand is a chip off the old block of granite and made in the image of granite. The higher one goes up the human sand hierarchy or sand tree, the more the temptation to ignore the foundation of the rock and to start to "influence" or "manipulate" others as "leaders" for one's own purposes.
To the extent that the Church of believers built on the sand of man helps one do what Jesus wants them to do, it is good. To the extent it does not, it is not good.
Some birds will make "stones" (sand on which to build their birdhouse) appear as "bread". That is, give "bad" "gifts" or "houses" to their "children".
