The English word "sign" comes, through French, from the Latin word "signum""mark, sign, token".

The ancient Greek word "σημεῖον""mark, sign, omen, flag" and is related to the English word "semantic" as in "meaning" and the first part of the English word "semaphore". In the Middle Ages, in English, some of these words were translated as "miracle".

5. Can't you read the signs

The song Signs, from May 1971, is the best known song by the Canadian group Five Man Electrical Band.

Written by Les Emmerson, it was motivated by traveling on Route 66 to Los Angeles where he noticed all the signs, including billboards, along the way, and that obscured the natural beauty of the landscape.

Lyrics part: ... do this, don't do that! Can't you read the signs?

More lyrics: And the sign said "Long-haired freaky people Need not apply" So I tucked my hair up under my hat And I went in to ask him why He said, "You look like a fine upstandin' young man I think you'll do" So I took off my hat and said, "Imagine that Huh, me workin' for you" Whoa Sign, sign Everywhere a sign.

8. Matthew 12:39 A tangent on sines and cosines
Verse routeMatthew 12:39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: [kjv]
Verse routeο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν αυτοις γενεα πονηρα και μοιχαλις σημειον επιζητει και σημειον ου δοθησεται αυτη ει μη το σημειον ιωνα του προφητου [gnt]

To go off on a tangent consider the following.
If Jonah provides a "sign", does Jesus provide a complementary "sign"?

That is, if the angle of Jonah is a "sine", does Jesus provide a "cosine"? In reality, it is a matter of degree.

9. He that hath ears
Before the "children playing music in the marketplace":
Verse routeMatthew 11:15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]
Verse routeο εχων ωτα ακουετω [gnt]

In the middle of the "kingdom parables":
Verse route13:9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]
Verse routeο εχων ωτα ακουετω [gnt]

Say and hear
Jesus sometimes uses a phrase such as "he that hath an ear ... hear" . That "hear" in Greek assumes "understanding". Otherwise, some clarification is needed. Jesus appears to use a phrase such as this when there is some deeper meaning that needs to be uncovered - often a play-on-word meaning in Greek. Jesus wants us to "hear" with our "ears". The ancient Greek word "φωνή""voice", as in "phonograph", and comes from "φως""light" and "νους""mind". That is, the "sound" of a "voice" is "light" into the "mind".

10. Hearing ears in Matthew
Verse routeMatthew 11:15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]
Verse route13:9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]
Verse route13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. [kjv]
Verse route13:43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]

Some say that these verses mean that we are to hear and understand the written words when spoken. The verses in Matthew between these "ear" verses have many play on words that require one to "hear" and "understand".

The phrase "Lend me an ear" does not mean that you should cut off your ear and give it to me.
Jesus uses the same idea in Revelation where there are play on words (with added meaning) that one needs to hear to understand.

Verse routeο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν αυτοις γενεα πονηρα και μοιχαλις σημειον επιζητει και σημειον ου δοθησεται αυτη ει μη το σημειον ιωνα του προφητου [gnt]

Evil and fornication
Adulterous and effeminancy

These words can be play on words using what is today called a Spoonerism (exchanging consonants between words in some way).

13. Matthew 12:39 Generation

14. Matthew 12:39 If not
Verse routeMatthew 12:39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: [kjv]
Verse routeο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν αυτοις γενεα πονηρα και μοιχαλις σημειον επιζητει και σημειον ου δοθησεται αυτη ει μη το σημειον ιωνα του προφητου [gnt]

The Greek word translated as "but" is that of "if" "not" (potentially). Paraphrase (Greek word order): ... and sign no (actual) given them if not (potential) the sign Jonah (of the) prophet.

A similar translation issue involving negation arises in the "salt" verse in the Sermon on the Mount.

15. Strongs - yet if not
*G2089 *94 ἔτι (et'-ee) : perhaps akin to G2094; "yet," still (of time or degree):--after that, also, ever, (any) further, (t-)henceforth (more), hereafter, (any) longer, (any) more(-one), now, still, yet.
*G1487 *0 εἰ (i) : a primary particle of conditionality; if, whether, that, etc.:--forasmuch as, if, that, (al-)though, whether. Often used in connection or composition with other particles.
*G3361 *0 μή (may) : a primary particle of qualified negation (whereas G3756 expresses an absolute denial); (adverb) not, (conjunction) lest; also (as an interrogative implying a negative answer (whereas G3756 expects an affirmative one)) whether:--any but (that), X forbear, + God forbid, + lack, lest, neither, never, no (X wise in), none, nor, (can-)not, nothing, that not, un(-taken), without. Often used in compounds in substantially the same relations.
The Strongs definitions of the three words are "yet", "if" and "not", just as used many times by Aristotle. Usage: However, this does not come through in translation. A modern Greek translation of this verse (omitted) appears to be translation not of the original Greek but of the KJV (King James Version).

16. Matthew 5:13 Yet whether not
Verse routeMatthew 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. [kjv]

The words for "yet if not" it translated as "but" in the KJV (and elsewhere). To what does the ambiguous implied "it" refer? The statement is in the form of a "counter-factual" in that this division does not exist. The "trodden" happens without the split since the split never happens.

18. Matthew 12:39 Seeking

Raising a sheep fallen into a pit (on the Sabbath) was earlier in the discourse.

Jesus uses the Greek word for "sign" three times after the religious establishment asks him about it.

20. Matthew 12:38-39 Miracle sign
Jesus mentions Jonah in Matthew.
Verse routeMatthew 12:38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. [kjv]

What is the "sign" of the prophet "Jonah", into the "ages"?

To spout off, the Jonah story is a whale of a tale! Some people have a hard time swallowing it. Other people spout off about it.

21. Matthew 12:40 Three days and three nights
Verse routeMatthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. [kjv]

AgreementIn a literal interpretation, how does one get (a minimum of) both "three" "days" and "three" "nights" from late Friday afternoon right before sundown until Sunday morning?
Did Jesus mean exactly or a minimum of these "days" and "nights"? The ancient Greek word "τρεῖς""three".

Remember: The stone was moved to let the women and disciples in, not let the resurrected Jesus get out.

Verse routetribus diebustribus noctibuscorde terrae tribus diebustribus noctibus [v]

Many focus on the literal "three" "days" and "three" "nights" and assume they know what constitutes the "heart" of the "earth" - the words that come first in the Greek. The English word changes from both the Latin and the Greek. Greek word order: ... so that is the son of man in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.

23. Matthew 12:40 Meanings
Verse routeMatthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. [kjv]

Some scholars will discount Jonah being in a literal whale since that might support what Jesus is saying. I have not heard scholars nor others discounting the traditional interpretation of "heart" and "earth".

Jesus uses many code words. As a good teacher, Jesus uses many distractors. The distractors often set on up thinking in a certain manner in order to see if you are paying attention to what is actually then said. In many cases, stories and rationalizations have been created, fabricated, etc., to justify the literal meanings while ignoring the code word meanings.

25. House on sand or earth
The Matthew verse uses "sand". The Luke verse uses "earth".
Verse routeMatthew 7:26 … shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: [kjv]
Verse route… ομοιωθησεται ανδρι μωρω οστις ωκοδομησεν αυτου την οικιαν επι την αμμον [gnt]

Verse routeο δε ακουσας και μη ποιησας ομοιος εστιν ανθρωπω οικοδομησαντι οικιαν επι την γην … [gnt]

In an arid region such as the Middle East, how much difference is there between "sand" and "earth"? In Matthew, Jesus uses the Greek word "sand" which can be a play on words on "mammon", "mommy" and "spots" as in "empty opinion".

Mammon 1
There are a number of play on words from the ancient Greek word "μαμωνᾶς""mammon" (as used in Matthew 6:24). The Greek word comes from the ancient Hebrew/Aramaic word "ממון" (mamon) ≈ "confidence in one's own abilities, money"
Based on the house built on "sand" in Matthew and the house built on "earth" in Luke, the Greek words for "sand" and "earth" appear to be interchangeable when used by Jesus.

Play- on-word paraphrase: It is a myth that through a serpent you can treasurize your treasure here on the earth where you and your food disappear and clever deceptive thieves dig a channel and take away something or bring in something (to achieve their deceptive goals).

28. Matthew 6:21 Treasure and heart

Verse routeοπου γαρ εστιν ο θησαυρος σου εκει εσται και η καρδια σου [gnt]

Heart and treasure Heart and earth
The "treasure" and "heart" of a person appear to be both located in the same place. Might they be the same thing? Might they be part of what is called the "soul"? Might they be part of the "body"?

Verse routeMatthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. [kjv]
Verse routeοπου γαρ εστιν ο θησαυρος σου εκει εσται και η καρδια σου [gnt]

Once Jesus came and became part of those who accepted him (as a little one) how long does Jesus remain there? How much time does Jesus then have to spend in the "heart" of those in the "earth" or "sand"? Is that until he comes back to take those little ones out? Heart and treasure
What might be the meaning of "treasure"? Could it be the "body" and/or "soul"?

What might be the meaning of "heart"?
The following have the same or similar meaning: righteousness, opinion, glory. Is it of God or of man?

Paraphrase: For where your life/body/soul/treasure is, there will your righteousness/opinion/glory/heart be also.

31. Nature and law and justice
Levels of truthIn his On Sophistic Refutations, Aristotle says that from ancient times, nature (truth) and law (opinion) are opposites and that justice goes with the law (opinion) but not with nature (truth).
English: Nature and Law are opposites, and justice is a good thing according to the law but not according to nature. Loeb #400, p. 73.
Greek: ἐναντία γὰρ εἶναι φύσιν καὶ νόμον, καὶ τὴν δικαιοσύνην κατὰ νόμον μὲν εἶναι καλόν, κατὰ φύσιν δ´ οὐ καλόν Sophistic Refutations [173b]
Whenever Jesus, Paul, etc., use the word for "righteousness" one must determine from context what is meant. There may be double meanings.

32. Truth and opinion
Levels of truthAristotle continues about "nature" as "truth" and "law" as "opinion".
English: In the view of the ancients what accorded with nature was the truth. While what accorded with law was the general opinion of mankind. Loeb #400, p. 73.

This "little child" could be anyone. The most important "little child" is you (one cookie rule). You are that "one" "little child"! What happens if you as that "one" "little child" do not "receive" or "accept" "on" the "name" of Jesus? Including the "if" in the translation makes this correspondence more clear.
Paraphrase: And if you receive/accept, as a little child, on the name of me (Jesus), you receive/accept me (Jesus).

The "accept" or "receive" is used twice in a commutative or both ways relationship. That is, both of the two, Jesus and you, must "agree" for the relationship to be valid. Otherwise, it will not be completed or done. The two are "glued" together.

Verse routeγενεα πονηρα και μοιχαλις σημειον επιζητει και σημειον ου δοθησεται αυτη ει μη το σημειον ιωνα και καταλιπων αυτους απηλθεν [gnt]

The KJV translates as "wicked" the Greek word that means "oppressive". The "oppression" is physical "oppression" and mental "oppression" through "deception" and other means.

The KJV translates as "adulterous" the Greek word that can mean "adulterous" but might be better translated as "seductive". The "seductive" is that of recruiting those into the system to avoid some of the "oppression" by "oppressing" others.

This reference to "Jonah" appears to refer to Matthew 12 where a large number of play on words are made, as is done here in this part of Matthew 16.

Red sky at night, sailors' delight.
Red sky at morning, sailors take warning.
What one calls "red" is information and is dependent on one's viewpoint. The word used by Jesus here is derived from the Greek word for "fire". That Greek word for "red" is a play on words that is not apparent in the English translation.

43. Matthew 16:2-3 Review
Verse routeMatthew 16:2 He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. [kjv]
Verse routeο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν αυτοις οψιας γενομενης λεγετε ευδια πυρραζει γαρ ο ουρανος [gnt]
Verse route16:3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? [kjv]
Verse routeκαι πρωι σημερον χειμων πυρραζει γαρ στυγναζων ο ουρανος το μεν προσωπον του ουρανου γινωσκετε διακρινειν τα δε σημεια των καιρων ου δυνασθε [gnt]

Paraphrase: In the evening [you snakes], you say it is good weather (through which) to examine heaven (Jesus). In the morning, it will be a bitter cold adversity (for you): for heaven is examining (by fire) and you appear hostile/grim. You know well the face of heaven [tail of the mind] (you are looking at the real heaven). Can you not discern (through separation) the miracles/indications done of the season [hand]?

Only one of the four "heaven" or "sky" words, the last one by Jesus, fits the play on words with "tail" "of the mind".

The grouped properties can be stacked together in what is known as a tetractys or bowling pin arrangement (for ten pin bowling).

Rather than use the less well-known name of tetractys, the name TenWordPin will be used to associate the model with the Ten Pin bowling arrangement and the Ten Words as the Ten Commandments are called in Hebrew and in the LXX (Septuagint).

52. Dual tracks
There are dual tracks in these two verses. Removing the common parts, or similarities, results in the following differences where the first column is plural and the second column is singular.

men (plural) queen (singular)
of Nineveh (north) of the south (Sheba)
(north, in modern Iraq) (Sheba, in modern Yemen)
stand up be woken/raised up/resurrected
repented (thought after)
into the preaching of Jonah
came from the
uttermost parts of the earth/sand
to hear the wisdom of Solomon
(more than) Jonah (is here) (more than) Solomon (is here)

Let us look at the various parts.

53. Strongs - stand up
*G450 *107 ἀνίστημι (an-is'-tay-mee) : from G303 and G2476; to stand up (literal or figurative, transitive or intransitive):--arise, lift up, raise up (again), rise (again), stand up(-right).

54. Play on words
Stand up and not fasting
The alpha negation prefix can be used with a play on words.
Greek spoken: ... stand up ...
Greek play on words: ... not fasting ... as in ... eating ...

This discourse was started because the Pharisees complained that the "disciples" (i.e., "men") were "eating" as in "not" "fasting".

55. Matthew 12:1
Verse routeMatthew 12:1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. [kjv]

Vertical wheat
The English word "corn" meant "grain" as in "wheat". The ancient Greek word "σποράς""scattered, dispersed" as in "scattered" "grain".
The ancient Greek word "στάχυς""ear of grain".

The ancient Greek word "ἐσθίω""eat, vex". To "not" "eat" is to "fast". The ancient Greek word "νηστεύω""fast, abstain from food".

Verse routeοι δε φαρισαιοι ιδοντες ειπαν αυτω ιδου οι μαθηται σου ποιουσιν ο ουκ εξεστιν ποιειν εν σαββατω [gnt]

The Greek word for "lawful" is that of "allowed". As usual, the KJV translates the same Greek word for "look around and observe and compare" as "behold" as two different wards, first as "saw" and then as "behold".

Information sign More: Matthew 12:1-21 Healing on the Sabbath

57. Matthew 12:41 Stand up

Verse routeεδει σε ουν βαλειν τα αργυρια μου τοις τραπεζιταις και ελθων εγω εκομισαμην αν το εμον συν τοκω [gnt]

This appears to be a somewhat sarcastic remark to the servant's excuse and not a reason to justify (or prohibit) the use of compound interest in banking.

The ancient Greek word "τόκος""childbirth, interest (loan), oppression" and is a semantic loan word from the Hebrew "תור""mediate/oppress". It is from "τίκτω""beget, bear, produce, generate" and is cognate with "τέκνον""child", "τέκτων""builder" as in "architect" and "τέχνη""craft" as in "technical"

The ancient Greek word "περἄτων""end, goal, extremity" (genitive) and comes from "πέρας""end, goal, extremity".

Why did Jesus use the word translated as "uttermost parts" ? Solomon's navy sailed much further than the place from where the queen of Sheba came?

Who is the "queen" of the "south"? The "queen" is from "Sheba", a Hebrew word that is related to the Hebrew word for "oath" and "wells".
Why does Jesus use "south" rather than "Sheba"?

79. Word play
Word play, by definition, is using words that sound like other words to convey some point. Often the point is humor in the form of puns.
Some people consider word play using puns as punishment. This statement itself is a play on words.

shake a tower take a shower
runny babbit bunny rabbit
fight a liar light a fire
For example, a Spoonerism, named for William Spooner (1844-1930), switches consonants of words. Vowels can often be pronounced such as to sound similar.
Word play, or play on words, is an important way to communicate. Play on words in Greek was done in ancient times. Paul uses it. Jesus uses it often in the Greek. Yes, almost everyone in the Eastern Mediterranean area, for over 350 years, had grown up learning Greek as well as their native language.

Queen of the south and King Satan not

The Greek for "queen" of the "south" can be a play on words with "king" "Satan" "not".

When pronounced, the "o" sound would be slid to the "a" sound with a slight pause for the "not".

Modern slide: "Santa" vs. "Satan" (many conspiracy theories)

Exchanging consonants to make a play on words is called a Spoonerism after the Rev. William Archibald Spooner (1844-1930). Example: light the fire. and fight the liar.

Here, Jesus uses the usual word for "cast out" rather than the word that is a play on words with "oblivion" since, with "Satan" that idea would be implicit in what is said.

The ancient Greek word "πλείων""more". If Jesus had meant to say "greater", there is a Greek word for "greater" that was used back in verse 6. The ancient Greek word "μείζων""greater, larger" in a comparative sense.

Plenty more and boat/ship
Jesus uses the idea of "greater" as in "plenty more" in the judgment involving Nineveh and then Solomon.
The ancient Greek word "πλείων""more" as an inflection of "πολύς""many, a lot".

A play on words would be "πλοῖον""boat, ship" which comes from "πλέω""sail". Saying: Your ship has arrived!. How many verses do we need to go to get Jesus in a "boat" that has arrived - with "plenty more" than Jonah or Solomon?

House Boat directions

The ancient Greek word "οἶκος""house, household".

Unlike the man who returns to the "house", Jesus leaves the "house". Jesus will now leave the "house" and sit in the "boat". Does that bode well for Jesus? Can you (canoe) see it very (ferry) well? Or (oar) what?

Plenty more and boat/ship
Some nine verses later, Jesus has arrived in a "boat". The ancient Greek word "πλοῖον""boat, ship" and can be a play on words with "πλείων""more".

Today they would be pronounced the same. At that time, there would have been some minor differences in the pronunciation.

Shore and holy salt
The ancient Greek word "αἰγιαλός""beach, shore". That sure sounds good to me - if you get my drift! A girl waving in the tide is a girl worth wading for.
This word is a play on words with "ἅγιος""devoted to the gods, sacred, holy" or "ἄγια""holy" (neuter plural) and "αλας, αλος""salt" which is the origin of the last part of "shore".

You are here
The Greek word translated as "place", not in the Greek, is that of "in this way". The ancient Greek word "ὧδε""in this way, thus" and comes from "ὅδε""this". Of place it would be "here", of time "present".
What does Jesus mean? Given the large number of play on words in these verses, there is indeed "plenty more" than just the person mentioned "here"! Is that not what he says? He told us plainly. Is that correct? Without planes, might it be boatly?

Verse routeοταν δε το ακαθαρτον πνευμα εξελθη απο του ανθρωπου διερχεται δι ανυδρων τοπων ζητουν αναπαυσιν και ουχ ευρισκει [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "καθαρός""clean, clear, pure" which is negated with an alpha prefix as "ἀκάθαρτος""unclean, impure". The end of this word for "unclean" can be a play on words with "ἄρτος""cake or loaf of bread" as in "not every loaf/bread".

What might be meant by "dry" "places" which are two separate words in the Greek?

The word can be a play on words with the name "Παῦλος""Paul". Why would the "unclean" "spirit" need to go back into the "house" to find "Paul"? Might it be "not Paul"?

For better or for worse, "seek" and you will "find" something. Might this be a subtle authentication code about "Paul"? Where did Jesus use this word in Matthew? How about twice at the end of the last chapter.

Verse routeMatthew 12:44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. [kjv]

Many translations use words that make the house seem like a nice place.

NIV (New International Version): Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order.

NLT (New Living Translation): Then it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’ So it returns and finds its former home empty, swept, and in order

A play on words appears to be the following.

According to Aristotle, there are two meanings for the same ancient Greek word "ζῷον""animal, portrait". This may not make sense in the context of Revelation 4:7, but even remote possibilities should be noted in case they prove useful at some point in the future.

Were these "beasts" actually "animals"? The Greek texts says that the "beasts" were "like" or "similar" to a description of an actual "animal". Might sufficiently advanced technology (e.g., "magic" according to Arthur C. Clarke) such as virtual reality provide such a "portrait" perception?

It appears that the "face" was very convincing but the "animals" were, like, just "like" the real thing.

Book: The Sorites Paradox
A paradox is something that is, literally, "beyond expectation". A paradox involving "heaps" is the "Sorites" paradox. The name comes from the ancient Greek word "σωρός""heap, pile, mound, quantity".
Sorites paradox (little by little): When does a "heap" of sand become not a "heap" as one grain at a time are removed from the "heap"? When did the "heap" begin to exist? What is the "cause" of the "heap"?

The original paradox is attributed to "Εὐβουλίδης""Eubulides" of "Μῑ́λητος""Miletus" on what is today the east coast of Turkey.

Part of the paradox has to do with how one defines a "heap". A similar paradox involves hair and baldness.

Stack Queue
In computer science, a "stack" is a LIFO (Last In First Out) data structure that works as a "stack" of cafeteria trays. In the extreme (all pushes then all pops), this creates a reverse order.
By contrast, a "queue" is a FIFI (First In First Out) data structure. Using the "new" as living and the "old" as dead, does a stack-based or first-in last-out structure have any meaning?

That is, from a time sequence perspective, the last in shall be first out and the first in shall be last out. This is the definition of a stack structure.

Paraphrase: But many that are first in shall be the last out and the last in shall be the first out.

Does each "spirit" get "worse" or are they all just "worse" than the original? Might this hint at a sequence over time rather than all at once?

Jesus often uses play on words that relate "worse" with (young) "pig" and with (cutting off of the) "hand". The "pig", as helpers or "hand" of the "birds", represents "bad" "salt".

Verse routeMatthew 9:16 No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. [kjv]
Verse routeουδεις δε επιβαλλει επιβλημα ρακους αγναφου επι ιματιω παλαιω αιρει γαρ το πληρωμα αυτου απο του ιματιου και χειρον σχισμα γινεται [gnt]

The idea of being "clothed in righteousness" and the "garments" provided at the wedding feast provide one connection of the meaning of the "garment" in Matthew 9:16. Those "garments" can be "righteous" or "unrighteous" depending on the point of view.

Paraphrase: No one throws pure light on an old garment (righteousness)... the rupture (schism) is made worse [pigs].

The play on words of "worse" and "swine" has an interesting connection to "rupture" in the verse of throwing "pearls" to "swine". Today the words are pronounced the same. The words "rent" as in "schism" and "rend" have about the same semantic meaning.

Might the play on words with "young swine" have any connection with the "young goats" in the parable of the "sheep" and "goats"?

Verse routeMatthew 12:45 … Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. [kjv]
Verse route… ουτως εσται και τη γενεα ταυτη τη πονηρα [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "γενεά""birth, race, generation, offspring" and "γένος""race, offspring" and is not limited to what today is called one "generation".

This word for "race" or "offspring" can be a play on words with "earth" and "new".

If the historical model of the seven churches, parables, beatitudes, etc., through church history since Jesus, applies, then the idea of "generation" goes beyond the forty (40) years from those who try to predict history and comings using that word.

Verse route12:48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? [kjv]

The words "brother", "sister" and "mother" are used by the people in the usual human sense. Jesus appears to have a different or alternate definition. The equivocation here is based on sliding the definition of "brother".

Discuss: Is it an equivocation to claim that one is male because one has made oneself appear to be male? As Aristotle says, one must clearly define what words mean to both detect an equivocation and destroy a logical argument.

Verse routeMatthew 12:50 For who soever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. [kjv]

Suppose the "brother" is Jesus. Could being "angry" with Jesus make one "liable" "with respect to" the "judgment"?
Verse route5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. [kjv]

Story: There were four brothers and one sister (the youngest). The youngest brother made a claim later in life. Do you see the non-commutative aspect of this story?

These verses can be added for the effect of minimizing the family in the culture of today and emphasizing the community or organization. These ideas are the foundational part of Karl Marx, and humanistic (against God) movements such as Communism, socialism, etc.

Note that these verses as spoken by Jesus will be used to tie together two verses that do not, without study, appear to be directly related.

Jesus provides a definition of what it means to be a "brother", "sister" or "mother" of Jesus. Assume the following using the definitions of Jesus.
Can it be assumed that the human definitions of "brother" applies to what Jesus says? That is:

164. Matthew 12:49-50 Brothers in Christ

Discuss: Does Jesus ever refer to himself a "brother" of someone else? How about in this (and the next) verse?

Notice that "father" is missing. Why? The literal meaning might be that the father of Jesus, Joseph, had passed away. Is there a deeper meaning?

The Greek uses "brothers" as "brethren" as in the male gender. Does this usage exclude "sisters" or the female gender?

The Latin word "frater""brother" as in the English word "fraternity".

The Latin word "soror""sister" as in the English word "sorority".

It is not hard to reason that the term "brother" as in "brethren" implies all genders that do the "will of my Father".

Getting back to the parable of the sheep and goats, the following is observed. Any solution to the dilemmas of this parable should take into account this distinction.

Discussion question: Is anyone of the human race his "brethren"? That is, there are no other qualifications.
