A
"vessel", from the Greek, is something that is "
made" or "
fashioned". There are many variations of the word differing in a prefix that modifies the meaning in same way.
Matthew 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, [kjv]
ο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν ουκ ανεγνωτε οτι ο κτισας απ αρχης αρσεν και θηλυ εποιησεν αυτους [gnt]
Going against the Creator or God is to remove the difference between "
male" and "
female". This can be done superficially but the underlying
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) is not changed.
In the beginning, God made them male and female. From this verse we can infer that God can view a person as a
"vessel".
1 Peter 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered. [kjv]
We see this idea in 1 Peter 3:7, which may or may not have been written by Peter.
If women are the weaker
"vessel" then men would be the stronger
"vessel". We are
not interested here in what weaker or stronger mean. The important point here is a person can be referred to as a
"vessel".
John 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day, ) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. [kjv]
οι ουν ιουδαιοι επει παρασκευη ην ινα μη μεινη επι του σταυρου τα σωματα εν τω σαββατω ην γαρ μεγαλη η ημερα εκεινου του σαββατου ηρωτησαν τον πιλατον ινα κατεαγωσιν αυτων τα σκελη και αρθωσιν [gnt]
The "
Day of Preparation" is the day before the Sabbath or High Sabbath.
"παρά" ≈ "beyond".
"σκευή" ≈ "vessel" as something that is made.
The modern Greek word
"Παρασκευή" (Pa-ra-skev-EE) ≈ "Friday", which is, literally, the day of "
Preparation".

24. 1 Samuel 23:1 Snatch up
1 Samuel 23:1 Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors. [kjv]

… diripiunt … [v]
… spoyle … [gb]
The Latin word
"diripioa" ≈ "tear apart, lay waste" from the Latin prefix
"dis" ≈ "separation" and the Latin word
"rapio" ≈ "grab, seize".
25. 1 Samuel 23:1
KJV: Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors.
Hebrew: ויגדו לדוד לאמר הנה פלשתים נלחמים בקעילה והמה שסים את הגרנות׃
Greek: και απηγγελη τω δαυιδ λεγοντες ιδου οι αλλοφυλοι πολεμουσιν εν τη κειλα και αυτοι διαρπαζουσιν καταπατουσιν τους αλω
Latin: et nuntiaverunt David dicentes ecce Philisthim obpugnant Ceila et diripiunt areas
Wycliffe: And thei telden to Dauid, and seiden, Lo! Filisteis fiyten ayens Seila, and rauyschen the corn floris.
Geneva: Then they tolde Dauid, saying, Beholde, the Philistims fight against Keilah, and spoyle the barnes.
Luther: Und es ward David angesagt: Siehe, die Philister streiten wider Kegila und berauben die Tennen.
26. Psalms 109:11
27. Psalms 109:11
KJV: Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour.
Hebrew: ינקש נושה לכל אשר לו ויבזו זרים יגיעו׃

Latin: scrutetur exactor universa quae habet et diripiant alieni laborem eius
Luther: Es müsse der Wucherer aussaugen alles, was er hat; und Fremde müssen seine Güter rauben.
28. Malachi 3:10 Money back guarantee
Malachi 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. [kjv]
και εισηνεγκατε παντα τα εκφορια εις τους θησαυρους και εν τω οικω αυτου εσται η διαρπαγη αυτου επισκεψασθε δη εν τουτω λεγει κυριος παντοκρατωρ εαν μη ανοιξω υμιν τους καταρρακτας του ουρανου και εκχεω υμιν την ευλογιαν μου εως του ικανωθηναι [lxx]
This verse is a favorite verse of church sermons that want to get the congregation to give more. I have been at some churches where there is a "
money-back guarantee" that if you give to the church, and you do not get back more in blessings than you gave, they will give you back your money.
I am not sure that this is the intended meaning of the verse.

29. Malachi 3:10
KJV: Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
Wycliffe: Brynge ye yn ech tithe in to my berne, that mete be in myn hous, and preue ye me on this thing, seith the Lord, if Y schal not opene to you the goteris of heuene, and schal schede out to you blessyng, til to aboundaunce.
30. Connection
It is interesting that the word for
"spoil" is essentially the same word as
"rapture" and the same word as
"ravenous" (as in wolves).
31. Crying wolf for the search and seizure of the rapture
Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. [kjv]
προσεχετε απο των ψευδοπροφητων οιτινες ερχονται προς υμας εν ενδυμασιν προβατων εσωθεν δε εισιν λυκοι αρπαγες [gnt]
The phrase "
to cry wolf" is used to indicate the proclamation of a "
false alarm". The
rapture is the
"snatching up", from the Latin
rapiemur, of the
"elect". The word
"rapture" is
not in the Bible because the word is from the Latin and not the Greek.
The ancient Greek word
"ἁρπάζω" ≈ "snatch away, carry off" and is found in various places in the Bible but translated using many different words. The question of the
"rapture" is that of which group will be
"raptured". Who are the
"elect" that will be
"raptured"?
32. The strong man
Who is the "strong man"? The Greek indicates the "strong one" with the implication that this might be a "man" in the literal analogy. There may be more than one meaning (where all make sense).
33. Moses as type of Christ
Analogies can be to Moses (as a type of Jesus) going into Egypt (the world) to bind the Pharaoh (strong man of the world) to bring (snatch or rapture) his people (vessels) out of bondage (to sin).
34. Roles reversed
If one tries to reverse the roles of Satan and Jesus, the words in the verse do not fit very well. Does Satan go into the house of Jesus? Where is the house of Jesus?
Jesus has no house or place to lay his head in this world.

|
Satan did try to bind Jesus on the cross, in this world, but that attempt failed.
35. Sermon
I once heard a sermon in a big church with regular local TV broadcasts, where the minister decided what he wanted to say and then cherry-picked verses to fit what he wanted to say. This is a not uncommon approach many pastors use to develop sermons.
The gist of this sermon was that Jesus was the strong man and one wanted Jesus in your house to protect against Satan coming into the house and taking you children. To help with this protection, the pastor did not have doors on the children's rooms so they would not have the privacy of a closed door.
36. Connection
Here is a comparison summary of several verse passages (mentioned above).
In the "strong man" verses, it is snatching up the "goods" or "vessels".
In the "wolf" verses, it is snatching up the "sheep" (flock).
In the "rapture" verses, it is snatching up the "believers".
Is there any connection here?

37. Matthew 23:24-25 Extortion
Matthew 23:24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. [kjv]
οδηγοι τυφλοι διυλιζοντες τον κωνωπα την δε καμηλον καταπινοντες [gnt]
23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites ! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. [kjv]
ουαι υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι καθαριζετε το εξωθεν του ποτηριου και της παροψιδος εσωθεν δε γεμουσιν εξ αρπαγης και ακρασιας [gnt]
What exactly is "
extortion"? The Greek word has the same root used for the "
rapture" and "
snatching" the goods from the "
strong man". The Greek for "
gnat" is the source of the English word
"canopy".
38. Matthew 23:24
KJV: Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
Greek: οδηγοι τυφλοι οι διυλιζοντες τον κωνωπα την δε καμηλον καταπινοντες
39. Matthew 23:25
KJV: Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites ! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
Greek: ουαι υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι καθαριζετε το εξωθεν του ποτηριου και της παροψιδος εσωθεν δε γεμουσιν εξ αρπαγης και ακρασιας
40. Third heaven
2 Corinthians 12:2 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. [kjv]
οιδα ανθρωπον εν χριστω προ ετων δεκατεσσαρων ειτε εν σωματι ουκ οιδα ειτε εκτος του σωματος ουκ οιδα ο θεος οιδεν αρπαγεντα τον τοιουτον εως τριτου ουρανου [gnt]
The "
caught up" is the word used elsewhere for "
rapture". Note that the Greek word order does not need to match the English word order.
41. 2 Corinthians 12:2
KJV: I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.
Greek: οιδα ανθρωπον εν χριστω προ ετων δεκατεσσαρων ειτε εν σωματι ουκ οιδα ειτε εκτος του σωματος ουκ οιδα ο θεος οιδεν αρπαγεντα τον τοιουτον εως τριτου ουρανου

… ruptis … [v]
In Luke 8:29, Jesus ordered some unclean spirits that had "
enraptured" or "
fascinated" a man to come out.
One might say that the man was "
fascinated" or "
enraptured" or "
caught up" with those unclean spirits.
The
"rapture" part is that of ensnaring or trapping someone. This can be physical as in apprehending someone or mental as in fascination.
46. Luke 8:29
KJV: (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness. )

47. Acts
In Acts 6:12 and Acts 19:29, the same word for "
fascinate" or "
enrapture" or "
caught up" is used. The meaning appears to be a literal "
seizure" or
"rapture".
Acts 6:12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council, [kjv]

caught up" or "
enraptured" by the wind. This can happen to people who become fascinated with wind bags, so to speak.
51. Acts 27:15
KJV: And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.

fascination" or "
enrapture".
54. Proverbs 6:25
KJV: Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
Hebrew: אל תחמד יפיה בלבבך ואל תקחך בעפעפיה׃

- "κράτος" ≈ "might, strength" which is source of the word "democracy" which means "power of the people".
57. Matthew 16:19
KJV: And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
