- *G3323 *2 Μεσσίας (mes-see'-as) : of Hebrew origin (4899); the Messias (i.e. Mashiach), or Christ:--Messias.
- μεσσιαν
- John 1:42 And he brought him to Jesus. And ...
- μεσσιας
- John 4:25 ... unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: ...
4. John 1:41 Messiah
John 1:41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. [kjv]
ευρισκει ουτος πρωτον τον αδελφον τον ιδιον σιμωνα και λεγει αυτω ευρηκαμεν τον μεσσιαν ο εστιν μεθερμηνευομενον χριστος [gnt]
The Greek word for the
"messiah" appears only
two times in the
GNT (Greek New Testament), both times in John 1.
5. John 1:41
KJV: He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
Greek: ευρισκει ουτος πρωτος πρωτον τον αδελφον τον ιδιον σιμωνα και λεγει αυτω ευρηκαμεν τον μεσσιαν ο εστιν μεθερμηνευομενον ο χριστος
6. John 4:25 Messiah
John 4:25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. [kjv]
λεγει αυτω η γυνη οιδα οτι μεσσιας ερχεται ο λεγομενος χριστος οταν ελθη εκεινος αναγγελει ημιν απαντα [gnt]
7. John 4:25
KJV: The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
Greek: λεγει αυτω η γυνη οιδα οτι μεσσιας ερχεται ο λεγομενος χριστος οταν ελθη εκεινος αναγγελει ημιν παντα απαντα
8. Sign of the Messiah
The religious establishment and the disciples often talk of a
"sign". In the Middle Ages, some English translations decided to change certain
"signs" into
"miracles". Jesus uses the Greek word for
"sign" in Matthew eight times, two of which are connected by
Jonah.
Matthew 12:38-39 (three times).
Matthew 16:3-4 (three times, discern the signs of the times, sign of Jonah).
Matthew 24:24,30 (deceived elect, coming on the clouds).
9. Matthew 12:38-39 Signs
10. Matthew 16:3-4 Signs
Matthew 16:3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? [kjv]
και πρωι σημερον χειμων πυρραζει γαρ στυγναζων ο ουρανος το μεν προσωπον του ουρανου γινωσκετε διακρινειν τα δε σημεια των καιρων ου δυνασθε [gnt]
16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. [kjv]
γενεα πονηρα και μοιχαλις σημειον επιζητει και σημειον ου δοθησεται αυτη ει μη το σημειον ιωνα και καταλιπων αυτους απηλθεν [gnt]
Jesus says they cannot "
discern", as "
through separation", the
"signs" of the "
times".
11. Sign of the Messiah
Was Jesus the
"Messiah" or just a
"sign" of the
"Messiah"? Does Jesus ever claim to be the
"Messiah"? The Greek words for
"sign" and
"Messiah" are
Spoonerisms. The word
"Jonah" is used by Jesus in only these two places.
"σημέαν" ≈ "mark, sign, omen, flag" (accusative)
"Μεσσίαν" ≈ "Messiah, anointed one" (accusative)
How well does this play on words fit what Jesus says?
12. Matthew 12:38-39 Sign of the Messiah
13. Matthew 16:3 Sign of the Messiah
Jesus (play on words):
... but can you not discern the signs/Messiah of the times?
14. Matthew 16:4 Sign of the Messiah
Matthew 16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. [kjv]
γενεα πονηρα και μοιχαλις σημειον επιζητει και σημειον ου δοθησεται αυτη ει μη το σημειον ιωνα και καταλιπων αυτους απηλθεν [gnt]
Jesus (play on words):
... seek a sign/Messiah, but no sign/Messiah shall be given but the sign/Messiah of the prophet Jonah/ages ...
15. Matthew 24:23-24 False Christs
Matthew 24:23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. [kjv]
τοτε εαν τις υμιν ειπη ιδου ωδε ο χριστος η ωδε μη πιστευσητε [gnt]
24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. [kjv]
εγερθησονται γαρ ψευδοχριστοι και ψευδοπροφηται και δωσουσιν σημεια μεγαλα και τερατα ωστε πλανασθαι ει δυνατον και τους εκλεκτους [gnt]
16. Matthew 24:29 Heavens
Matthew 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: [kjv]
ευθεως δε μετα την θλιψιν των ημερων εκεινων ο ηλιος σκοτισθησεται και η σεληνη ου δωσει το φεγγος αυτης και οι αστερες πεσουνται απο του ουρανου και αι δυναμεις των ουρανων σαλευθησονται [gnt]
What are these "
stars" that "
fall" and what "
powers" are "
shaken"? Might these be related to the
"tail" "of the mind" for the
first use of
"heaven" in this verse? Some of this appears to be referenced or described in Revelation.
The description by Jesus fits what is called an "
eclipse". The preceding verse describes "
lightning". The "
shaken" describes ocean waves.
17. Matthew 24:30 On the clouds of the heaven
Matthew 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. [kjv]
και τοτε φανησεται το σημειον του υιου του ανθρωπου εν ουρανω και τοτε κοψονται πασαι αι φυλαι της γης και οψονται τον υιον του ανθρωπου ερχομενον επι των νεφελων του ουρανου μετα δυναμεως και δοξης πολλης [gnt]
Only the
second word for
"heaven" might be a play on words with
"tail" "of the mind". The context may not fit for such a play on words.
The KJV (King James Version) translates "in" the "clouds" for what the Greek has as "on" the "clouds".
The
KJV translates as
"great" the Greek word that means "
many". The ancient Greek word
"μεγας" ≈ "great" and is the source of the English prefix
"mega". This word is not used here.
18. Miraculous signs of the Messiah
What is a miracle?
Who decides what constitutes a miracle?
Do miracles prove the Bible? (converse errors)
Immanuel Kant - definition of a miracle.
C.S. Lewis on miracles.
Miracles that defy the 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics.
AIT (Algorithmic Information Theory): information and randomness are opposites. Who decides?
Law of large numbers (sampling theorem)
Borel's Law (attributed to Borel): events with sufficiently small probability of happening are so improbable as to be practically impossible. Evolutionists: There is always that chance.
Math definition of a miracle. Statistical mechanics.
Miracle of life. (coded information argument)
19. Luke 11:29 Jonah
Luke 11:29 And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. [kjv]
των δε οχλων επαθροιζομενων ηρξατο λεγειν η γενεα αυτη γενεα πονηρα εστιν σημειον ζητει και σημειον ου δοθησεται αυτη ει μη το σημειον ιωνα [gnt]
Luke mentions the same Jonah and the
"sign" but without the
three days and
three nights and without
Nineveh.
20. Matthew 12:38-39 Miracle sign
Jesus mentions Jonah in Matthew.
Matthew 12:38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. [kjv]
τοτε απεκριθησαν αυτω τινες των γραμματεων και φαρισαιων λεγοντες διδασκαλε θελομεν απο σου σημειον ιδειν [gnt]
12:39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: [kjv]
ο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν αυτοις γενεα πονηρα και μοιχαλις σημειον επιζητει και σημειον ου δοθησεται αυτη ει μη το σημειον ιωνα του προφητου [gnt]
What is the
"sign" of the prophet
"Jonah", into the
"ages"?
To
spout off, the Jonah story is a
whale of a
tale! Some people have a hard time
swallowing it. Other people
spout off about it.
21. Matthew 12:40 Three days and three nights
Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. [kjv]

In a literal interpretation, how does one get (a
minimum of) both
"three" "days" and "three" "nights" from late
Friday afternoon right before sundown until Sunday morning?
Did Jesus mean
exactly or a
minimum of these
"days" and
"nights"? The ancient Greek word
"τρεῖς" ≈ "three".
Remember: The stone was moved to let the women and disciples in, not let the resurrected Jesus get out.
[Mexican magician]
Luke mentions the same Jonah and the
"sign" but without the
three days and
three nights and without
Nineveh.
Luke mentions the same Jonah and the
"sign" but without the
three days and
three nights and without
Nineveh.
24. Luke 11:29
KJV: And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
Greek: των δε οχλων επαθροιζομενων ηρξατο λεγειν η γενεα αυτη γενεα πονηρα εστιν σημειον επιζητει ζητει και σημειον ου δοθησεται αυτη ει μη το σημειον ιωνα του προφητου
25. Mark 6:52 Miracles
Mark 6:52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. [kjv]
ου γαρ συνηκαν επι τοις αρτοις αλλ ην αυτων η καρδια πεπωρωμενη [gnt]
26. Mark 6:52
KJV: For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.
Greek: ου γαρ συνηκαν επι τοις αρτοις αλλ ην γαρ αυτων η καρδια αυτων πεπωρωμενη
27. Mark 9:39 Miracles
Mark 9:39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. [kjv]
ο δε ιησους ειπεν μη κωλυετε αυτον ουδεις γαρ εστιν ος ποιησει δυναμιν επι τω ονοματι μου και δυνησεται ταχυ κακολογησαι με [gnt]
Again, the word "
miracle" is inferred and not in the Greek. The word for "
potentiality", sometimes "
power", is used.
The
KJV translates as "
lightly" the Greek word that means "
quickly".
28. Mark 9:39
KJV: But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.
Greek: ο δε ιησους ειπεν μη κωλυετε αυτον ουδεις γαρ εστιν ος ποιησει δυναμιν επι τω ονοματι μου και δυνησεται ταχυ κακολογησαι με
29. Luke 23:8
Luke 23:8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. [kjv]
ο δε ηρωδης ιδων τον ιησουν εχαρη λιαν ην γαρ εξ ικανων χρονων θελων ιδειν αυτον δια το ακουειν περι αυτου και ηλπιζεν τι σημειον ιδειν υπ αυτου γινομενον [gnt]
The
KJV translates as "
season" the Greek word that means exact "
time".
The
KJV translates as "
miracle" the Greek word that means exact "
sign".
30. Luke 23:8
KJV: And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.
Greek: ο δε ηρωδης ιδων τον ιησουν εχαρη λιαν ην γαρ θελων εξ ικανου ικανων χρονων θελων ιδειν αυτον δια το ακουειν πολλα περι αυτου και ηλπιζεν τι σημειον ιδειν υπ αυτου γινομενον
31. John 2:11
John 2:11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. [kjv]
ταυτην εποιησεν αρχην των σημειων ο ιησους εν κανα της γαλιλαιας και εφανερωσεν την δοξαν αυτου και επιστευσαν εις αυτον οι μαθηται αυτου [gnt]
John mentions "
signs" much more than the other Gospels. The
KJV translates as "
miracles" the Greek word that means "
signs". The Greek word for "
glory" means "
opinion". There is a different Greek word for "
praise". The Greek word translated "
in" is that of "
into".
Jesus manifested (made apparent) his glory and his disciples believed into him..
Jesus manifested (made apparent) his opinion and his disciples believed into him.

32. John 2:11
KJV: This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
Greek: ταυτην εποιησεν την αρχην των σημειων ο ιησους εν κανα της γαλιλαιας και εφανερωσεν την δοξαν αυτου και επιστευσαν εις αυτον οι μαθηται αυτου
