1. Matthew 24:21-24 Short day cutoff
This content is being developed.

2. Matthew 24: Olivet discourse
Matthew 24 is known as the Olivet Discourse where Jesus, at the request of the disciples, talks of the End Times or "All of it". The Olivet Discourse continues into chapter 25.

3. Matthew 24:21-24 Short day cutoff
Verse routeMatthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. [kjv]
Verse route24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. [kjv]

How could it be possible that no flesh would be saved? For 2000 years, since the time of Jesus, no one could understand how "no flesh would be saved". Until 1945.
Discuss: What has been the effect of social media, such as Facebook, on those who use it (or are addicted to it)?

4. Safe nuclear power
The judgments in Revelation are often assumed to be part of the "great" "tribulation" in Matthew 24 in the Olivet Discourse. What does it mean for "flesh" to be "saved"? How about "safe"? Is there a "safe" answer to this question?

The word "safe" is a relative term and needs a context for the meaning to be clear.

5. Matthew 24:21 Great and peer-ful tribulation
Verse routeMatthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. [kjv]
Verse routeεσται γαρ τοτε θλιψις μεγαλη οια ου γεγονεν απ αρχης κοσμου εως του νυν ουδ ου μη γενηται [gnt]
Verse routetribulatio magnainitio mundimodo … [v]

The ancient Greek word "μεγας""great" and is the source of the English prefix "mega".

The ancient Greek word "θλῖψις""pressure" and, figuratively, "oppression", "affliction", etc. Might this include peer "pressure"? The Latin word "tribulare""press, thresh" and is the source, through French, of the English word "tribulation".

6. Matthew 15:2 Traditions
Verse routeMatthew 15:2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. [kjv]
Verse routeδια τι οι μαθηται σου παραβαινουσιν την παραδοσιν των πρεσβυτερων ου γαρ νιπτονται τας χειρας οταν αρτον εσθιωσιν [gnt]
Verse routediscipulitransgrediuntur traditionem seniorumlavant manuspanem manducant [v]

The ancient Greek word "παράδοσις""transmission, transfer" and comes from two Greek words. In context, it can mean "tradition" as something "transmitted" or "handed over" from generation to generation as in "beyond" the current generation.

The "traditions" of men that form man's additions to God's law is what Jesus refers to as "jots" as "opinions" or "spots" and "tittles" as "horns" or "rules". These are usually enforced, deceptively, using "oaths".

7. Matthew 10:28 Soul and body
Verse routeMatthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι μη φοβεισθε απο των αποκτεινοντων το σωμα την δε ψυχην μη δυναμενων αποκτειναι φοβεισθε δε μαλλον τον δυναμενον και ψυχην και σωμα απολεσαι εν γεεννη [gnt]

Jesus tells us that the "body" and the "soul" are different. Jesus tells us who we should "fear" and it is not "fear" about the cares and concerns of this world. The most dangerous attacks are not from the outside but from the inside and involve deception.

One cannot "destroy the soul" by "killing" the body is in persecution (e.g., by the Roman administrations). The primary way to "destroy" the "soul" is through deception so that you "sell yourself out" or are "sold out".

Jesus provides an example in the next verse.

8. Matthew 10:29-31 Soul and body
Verse routeMatthew 10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. [kjv]
Verse routeουχι δυο στρουθια ασσαριου πωλειται και εν εξ αυτων ου πεσειται επι την γην ανευ του πατρος υμων [gnt]

9. Matthew 24:9 Traditional delivering
Verse routeMatthew 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. [kjv]
Verse routeτοτε παραδωσουσιν υμας εις θλιψιν και αποκτενουσιν υμας και εσεσθε μισουμενοι υπο παντων των εθνων δια το ονομα μου [gnt]
Verse routetradenttribulationemoccidentodio omnibus gentibusnomen … [v]

Who will do the "delivering" or "turning over" or "betraying" (same word in Greek)? The Latin word "trado""hand over, betray" (verb) and is the source, through French, of the English word "traitor" (noun). The Greek word translated as "nations" is that of "peoples". Great "persecution" and "hatred" will result.

Information sign More: Matthew 24:8-14 Beginning of sorrows

10. Matthew 24:9 Affliction pressure of tribulation

The ancient Greek word "θλῖψις""pressure" and, figuratively, "oppression", "affliction", etc. Might this include peer "pressure"? The Latin word "tribulare""press, thresh" and is the source, through French, of the English word "tribulation".

Can we then relate "pressure", "affliction", "oppression" and "tribulation", from the Latin word for "pressure"?

Information sign More: Matthew 24:8-14 Beginning of sorrows

11. Matthew 24:9 Affliction pressure of tribulation

The figurative meaning of "θλῖψις""pressure" is the same as the literal meaning of the ancient Greek word "πονηρός""oppressed by toils" and which comes from the ancient Greek word "πονέω""to toil, labor". Think "oppression", including "oppressing" oneself, and which comes from wanting to be "great" (at the expense of others, or yourself). This is the word often translated as "evil".

Thus, "evil" and "tribulation" and "affliction" have related meanings.

Information sign More: Matthew 24:8-14 Beginning of sorrows

12. Matthew 24:9 Kill

The ancient Greek word "ἀποκτείνω""kill, slay" and can be figurative instead of a physical action. When Jesus uses the word "kill" in this verse, which of the following is intended? Which of these is to be "feared"? Is there another way to look at the meaning of this verse?

Can your "soul" be "pressured" through "deception"? How about "tradition"? How about through "rewards"?

13. Matthew 24:9 Alternate paraphrase

Alternate paraphrase (using Greek meanings and play on words): Then shall they tradition (hand over) you into (peer and deceptive) pressure (affliction) and shall kill you (your soul, through deception) and you shall be hatefully rewarded under all those peoples through the (deceptive use of) my name.

14. Matthew 24:9,21 Pressure

Verse route24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. [kjv]
Verse routeεσται γαρ τοτε θλιψις μεγαλη οια ου γεγονεν απ αρχης κοσμου εως του νυν ουδ ου μη γενηται [gnt]
Verse routetribulatio magnainitio mundimodo … [v]

In verses 9 and 21, the KJV (King James Version) translates the Greek word for "pressure" as "afflicted" and then "tribulation".

15. Groupthink decisions
Groupthink - before Groupthink - after
Groups tend to have a lot of peer "pressure". Such "pressure" is often reinforced with "oaths" and "vows" of allegiance and belief. Some of these are called "creeds".
In a group that thinks in a similar manner, one must be careful about voicing an opinion that is contrary to the group opinion.

Voicing an opinion that is not the group opinion risks suffering the anger of the group.

Walter Lippman: When all think alike, then no one is thinking.

Does this ever happen with Bible verses? That is, it appears that no one ever thinks about what the original Greek words meant at that time, etc.

16. Matthew 24:21 Great tribulation

The ancient Greek word "θλῖψις""pressure" and, figuratively, "oppression", "affliction", etc. Might this include peer "pressure"?

The idea of peer "pressure" has been around since the beginning of time. Jesus uses the word for "world" as meaning the "people in the world".

Would a worldwide and real-time communication and news and social network lead to "great" (peer) "pressure" as has never been seen before and ever will be seen? Does peer "pressure" exist in religious organizations?

When some see a button for peer "pressure" they think it says "press here".

18. Matthew 24:22,24,31 Chosen elect
Verse routeMatthew 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. [kjv]

Verse route24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. [kjv]

Verse route24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. [kjv]

Jesus uses the noun for "elect" or "chosen" three times in Matthew 24 and one other time, at the end of the Parable of the Wedding feast in Matthew 22. These nouns are either mistranslated in context or ambiguous in use (or both).

You must be this tall to ride
Suppose the main pastor is "short" and some of the staff leave. What does it mean to say that the church is now "short" staffed? Suppose you point this out and the pastor gets mad. Would you then say that the pastor is getting "short" with you?

Many such "short" jokes and comments arise in the story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19.
Many, however, come up "short". We will cover the above verse "shortly".

Chisco shortening Flame
The analogy of "Christ's" "shortening" with "Crisco" "shortening" appears to be a half-baked idea, even (oven) if the words sound similar. Let's put this idea on the back burner.
To be fully baked, perhaps something needs to be "taken" and "put" into a "fire" pit of some kind. Perhaps "outer" "darkness" would be sufficient. Might the "darkness" be achieved by "darkening" the "sun"? Such a "darkness" might be similar to the "blind" leading the "blind".

21. Strongs - shortened
*G2856 *4 κολοβόω (kol-ob-o'-o) : from a derivative of the base of G2849; to dock, i.e. (figuratively) abridge:--shorten.
Word usage per chapter Words: εκολοβωθησαν=1 εκολοβωσεν=2 κολοβωθησονται=1

The ancient Greek word "κολοβόω""dock, curtail, mutilate" and, of time, it can mean "shorten".

Note how Mark, what Peter told Mark, uses the more correct Greek for "shortened" while Matthew, writing what Jesus says, uses less correct Greek for "shortened". Perhaps there is a play on words here.

22. Usage - shortened
  • *G2856 *4 κολοβόω (kol-ob-o'-o) : from a derivative of the base of G2849; to dock, i.e. (figuratively) abridge:--shorten.

    • κολοβωθησονται
      •   Matthew 24:22 ... those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

23. Mark 13:20 Days shortened in Mark
Verse routeMark 13:20 And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days. [kjv]

Verse routebreviassetelectoselegit breviavit … [v]

It appears obvious, from the interspersed commentary, that what the Lord said is being remembered and not provided from written records. Jesus does not appear to use verbs as play on words, just nouns. Mark uses a more correct Greek while Jesus appears to use a play on words which Matthew does his best to write down as pronounced.

The Latin word "brevis""short" and is the source, through French, of the English word "brief".

Verse routebreviatielectos breviabuntur … [v]

The ancient Greek word "κολοβόω""dock, curtail, mutilate" and, in the GNT (Greek New Testament), "shorten". It often has to do with the removing of the "horns" from an animal. Jesus associates "horns" with added (and unnecessary) "rules" as "tittles" (antennas) while "empty opinion" is that of "spots" or "jots". What do the "elect" have to do with "cutting off"? How is "flesh" "saved"? Might the "days" of the (not good) "elect" be "cut off" in some way?

Verse routebreviatielectos breviabuntur … [v]

The ancient Greek word "σάρξ""flesh that covers the bones" and is the part of the word "σαρκασμός""bitter irony, sacrasm" which is the source, through Latin and French, of the English word "sacrasm".

The ancient Greek word "σῴζω""heal, observe, rescue" and, from the GNT, "save".

27. Matthew 24:22 Days of the few cutoff
Verse routeMatthew 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. [kjv]

Day and wilderness Those and there yes

Might the "days" of the (not good) "elect" in the "wilderness" ("in that place" "yes") (where "few" go) be "cut off" in some (false Christ) way (next verse)?

28. Matthew 24:22 Not conditionals
Verse routeMatthew 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι ει μη εκολοβωθησαν αι ημεραι εκειναι ουκ αν εσωθη πασα σαρξ δια δε τους εκλεκτους κολοβωθησονται αι ημεραι εκειναι [gnt]
Verse routebreviatielectos breviabuntur … [v]

The Greek word translated as "except" is that of "if/whether" "not" (potential). The Greek word translated as "no" is that of "not" (actual) "if/when". Thus the "if" "not" (potential) and then "not" "if" (actual) do not appear to be directly translated.

29. Matthew 24:22 Greek word order
Verse routeMatthew 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. [kjv]

Verse routebreviatielectos breviabuntur … [v]

Greek word order: and if not (potential) curtailed/shortened the days those not (actual) if saved all flesh through then/however of the elect curtailed/shortened the days those.

Jesus appears to be making a logical statement. Some do not like the use of logic on what Jesus says but, instead, prefer opinion. Everyone can have one or more of a large number of opinions on a matter. There are many fewer logical views of that same matter.

Let us, however, here consider the logic of what Jesus is saying. To do that, we need to review some logic rules.

30. Logical inference groups
The following are all equivalent.
A implies B modens ponens
B if A (top down)
(not B) or A
(not B) implies (not A) modens tollens

True

If the above are true, then the following are not true or false.

The following are all equivalent.
B implies A converse error
A if B (top down)
(not A) or B
(not A) implies (not B) fact check fallacy
B or (not A)
False

Note that if the bottom table is true, then the top table is not true or false. To see this requires algebraic substitution of names for other names (as in a code). This is part of the programming process in computer science, software engineering, etc.

31. Matthew 24:22 Variable operands and operators

Connective operators for the verse
if not  ει μη  if not
if not  ουκ αν  if not
but by  δια δε  through but
To support the idea of a good "elect". the Greek for "by" or "through" needs to be changed to "for".

32. Matthew 24:22 Abstracted logic
Verse routeMatthew 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. [kjv]

Let X be "those days/parts be shortened or cut off", Y be "flesh saved", E be "elect".

33. Matthew 24:22 Paraphrase

Paraphrase using the above logic: And if those days [parts there yes] were not cut off (horns/rules removed) no flesh would be saved, but though the (deceived) elect's (false) ideas, those days [parts there yes] will be cut off (horns/rules removed) in order to (invalid logic) save all flesh. Discuss: Has it ever happened that false teachers want to "cut off" all horns/rules/parts in order that all "flesh" might be "saved"? Does it help fill the pews (or their own salary)?

34. Commandments and laws

 1   2   3   +   -   ▶
If one violates man's additions to God's law, has one violated the whole/entire law?

Does "all scripture" include man's additions to God's law?
Greek has several words that, in the English, may be translated as "fulfill" or "fill full" and usually involves adding.

36. 2 Thessalonians 2:11 Strong delusion
Verse route2 Thessalonians 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: [kjv]
Verse routeκαι δια τουτο πεμπει αυτοις ο θεος ενεργειαν πλανης εις το πιστευσαι αυτους τω ψευδει [gnt]

The Greek for "strong" is, from Aristotle, "actuality" so that the "strong" "delusion" is an "actual" "wandering/deviation/error" that is "sent" "into" the faith/belief. The KJV translates "into" as "that".

Planets in ancient timesThe ancient Greek word "πλανάω""wander about" and is the source of the English word "planet" as a "wandering" "star". The ancient Greek word"ψευδής""lying, false, untrue" and is the source of the English word "pseudo". The "strong" "delusion" appears to be a "perception".
Discussion question: There have been many speculations about this "lie". What are some candidates for this "lie"? What ideas that are "false" might be put "into" or "against" the faith?

Verse routeτοτε εαν τις υμιν ειπη ιδου ωδε ο χριστος η ωδε μη πιστευσητε [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "ὧδε""in this way, thus" and comes from "ὅδε""this". Translating the word as "here" loses the idea of the manner or way in which something is done. Discuss: Can one be a false Christ if one repeats, in the same manner/way, ideas that a false Christ would say?

Verse routeMatthew 24:23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. [kjv]
Verse routeτοτε εαν τις υμιν ειπη ιδου ωδε ο χριστος η ωδε μη πιστευσητε [gnt]

NIV (New International Version): At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it.

NLT (New Living Translation): “Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah,’ or ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it.

Berean Literal Bible: Then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the Christ,' or 'Here,' do not believe it.

The idea of a localized "here" is in most translations rather than the general Greek meaning of "in this way/manner".

39. Matthew 24:22-23 Connect the verses

Verse route24:23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. [kjv]
Verse routeτοτε εαν τις υμιν ειπη ιδου ωδε ο χριστος η ωδε μη πιστευσητε [gnt]

There are three "if" words used in these adjacent verses. Might they be related? The "if" in verse 23 is made up of both "if" words in verse 22.

40. Matthew 24:22

To support the idea of a good "elect" in verse 22. the Greek for "by" or "through" needs to be changed to "for". The ancient Greek prefix "δια""through, by" as in the first part of the English word "diameter".

41. Matthew 24:22-23 Connect the verses
Verse routeMatthew 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. [kjv]

Verse route24:23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. [kjv]
Verse routeτοτε εαν τις υμιν ειπη ιδου ωδε ο χριστος η ωδε μη πιστευσητε [gnt]

This verse continues the previous verse with the not good "elect" self "deceived" and "deceiving". What "ways" are they using to "deceive"? Who is the unspecified "any" man? Could it be the "elect"?

42. Matthew 24:23

KJV: Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.

43. Matthew 24:24 Deception
Verse routeMatthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. [kjv]
Verse routeεγερθησονται γαρ ψευδοχριστοι και ψευδοπροφηται και δωσουσιν σημεια μεγαλα και τερατα ωστε πλανασθαι ει δυνατον και τους εκλεκτους [gnt]

Which is meant in connection with the false Christs and false prophets?

44. Matthew 24:24 Possible
Verse routeMatthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. [kjv]

Here is an analogy of a statement made by a lawyer defending his politician client accused of corruption. Here is an analogy for the "elect"

45. Matthew 24:24 Falsity
Verse routeMatthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. [kjv]

46. Absolute power
John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton (1834-1902) said that "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men..." (Wikipedia) in a letter to an Anglican bishop.

The question is this. Did the power corrupt or did the opportunity to use power show what already existed in the person?

47. Matthew 24:23-24 False Christs
Verse routeMatthew 24:23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. [kjv]
Verse routeτοτε εαν τις υμιν ειπη ιδου ωδε ο χριστος η ωδε μη πιστευσητε [gnt]

48. Matthew 24:4-5 False Christs and all of it
For context, here are some earlier verses in the discourse.

Verse routeMatthew 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. [kjv]
Verse route24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. [kjv]

Many appears to mean "many" as in "not just a few". Can you identify some candidates through out history that might fit the description? Mark is similar to Matthew. Luke has some differences.

Will they actually say that they are "Christ"? One might "fact check" that they are not actually "Christ".
Or might they, as teachers, preachers, etc., be their own version of "Christ", using selected parts of scripture, etc., and become as a "god", in their deception of others and themselves?

Verse routeεσται γαρ τοτε θλιψις μεγαλη οια ου γεγονεν απ αρχης κοσμου εως του νυν ουδ ου μη γενηται [gnt]

Sign and Messiah
Can the following be related in a "great" way?

50. Matthew 24:24 Give a dose of deception

The Greek word translated as "show" is the ancient Greek word "δώσουσι""give, grant" which comes from "δίδωμι""give, grant". The word is relate to "δόσις""giving, gift, dose of medicine" and is the source of the English word "dose".

Might the "elect" be giving a "dose" of "deception"? This "dose" might be self-injected.

55. Matthew 24:24 Friendly wonders

Verse routeεγερθησονται γαρ ψευδοχριστοι και ψευδοπροφηται και δωσουσιν σημεια μεγαλα και τερατα ωστε πλανασθαι ει δυνατον και τους εκλεκτους [gnt]

Jesus does not use the word "friend" in a good sense. The ancient Greek word "ἑταιρεία""association, company, band". The modern Greek word "εταιρεία" (eh-teh-REE-a) ≈ "association, society, company".

There is a possible play on words in Greek of "wonders" with "friends". Once one hears it, can be hard to un-hear it.

56. Matthew 20:13 Friend
Verse routeMatthew 20:13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? [kjv]

Jesus does not use the word "friend" in a good sense. The ancient Greek word "ἑταιρεία""association, company, band". The modern Greek word "εταιρεία" (eh-teh-REE-a) ≈ "association, society, company".

This is not the ancient Greek word "φίλος""that which is loved or important, friend" as in "Philadelphia" as "love of brothers" or "brotherly love".

57. The actual potency and inner workings of energy
Verse routeGalatians 3:5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? [kjv]
Verse routeο ουν επιχορηγων υμιν το πνευμα και ενεργων δυναμεις εν υμιν εξ εργων νομου η εξ ακοης πιστεως [gnt]

Energy is a word and concept that has ancient roots but had a different meaning in ancient times. Aristotle first used the ancient Greek word "ενέργεια""actuality" for "actuality", literally, "in working".

The ancient Greek word "δύναμις""power, might, strength, potentiality" and is used by Aristotle for something that has "potential". The root word is "work" and is used many times in the LXX (Septuagint) and GNT.

58. Matthew 24:24 Elective deceptions

Verse routeεγερθησονται γαρ ψευδοχριστοι και ψευδοπροφηται και δωσουσιν σημεια μεγαλα και τερατα ωστε πλανασθαι ει δυνατον και τους εκλεκτους [gnt]

To what does this refer? The deception of the elect. Who are the "elect"? Is it "potentially possible" to "deceive" someone who is already "deceived" or has self "deceived"?

59. Matthew 24:24 Wessex Gospel

Verse routelease witegengecorene … [wes]

In the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus talks about "all of it" in the end times, the "elect", not just those "called", are in potential danger of being deceived.

The Wessex Gospels use "lease witegen" for "false prophets". The "witegen" were the "prophets" or "wise men". The "wit" in "witegen" is still in English as "wit" as in "smarts" or "understanding".
