Daniel 9:21-27 Daniel seventy weeks prophecy
1. Daniel 9:21-27 Daniel seventy weeks prophecy
This content is being developed.
2. Time has not yet come
In the
GNT (Greek New Testament), Jesus often says, "
my time has not come". He is not going to the feast.
John 7:8 Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come. [kjv]
Then, all of a sudden, Jesus reverses direction.
He sets up a password for a donkey for "the day" not just "a day".
He tells Judas he must act now and not delay, even though they wanted to wait.
He does things to antagonize the religious leadership.
Jesus is in control the entire time.
3. Matthew 21:1-15 Triumphal entry
Matthew 21:8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. [kjv]
21:9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. [kjv]
21:10 And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? [kjv]
21:11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee. [kjv]
Palm Sunday is the day that Jesus enters Jerusalem. This was not "
a day" but "
the day" which angered the religious establishment. They were expecting the "
Messiah" and "
King".
What do branches represent? There were many trees in Jerusalem? What happened to the trees?
4. Daniel 9:21-27 Daniel seventy weeks prophecy
Daniel 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. [kjv]
[he]

That this prophecy uses 360 day prophetic years was not realized until 1896 in a book "
The Coming Prince" by the former chief of Scotland Yard Sir Robert Anderson.
≈ 544 BC (Daniel)
≈ 445/444 BC (Nehemiah) Commandant to rebuild Jerusalem.
≈ 31/32 AD (Crucifixion)
= 70 AD (temple destroyed)
Jesus is the
"Messiah" (religious leader, 1st coming) and the
"King" (civil leader, 2nd coming).
5. Jesus as Messiah and King
In the Bible, Jesus has two roles:
Messiah and
King.
|
|
| Jesus as Messiah and King |
| Jesus |
| Messiah |
King |
| First coming |
Second coming |
| Kinsman redeemer |
Avenger of Blood |
| Love God and neighbor |
Love God and neighbor |
|
The Jews at the time of Christ expected both and were disappointed in the "
first coming". The phrase "
Thy kingdom come" refers to that "
second coming" to replace the "
evil rulers" of this world with "
Christ" as
"King". Many details are in Revelation.
This idea shifted in the 4th century when the church hierarchy (i.e., "
tree" with "
birds") became employed by those "
evil rulers".
Does Jesus claim to be the
"Messiah"? Does Jesus claim to be "
God"?
6. Jesus as Messiah and King
7. Messiah and Saviour
Jesus is our
"Messiah" (
Savior), in Hebrew, the
"ma-shee-ack". The
"Messiah" is associated with the "
kinsman redeemer". Many details are in the book of Ruth. This Hebrew word was translated into Greek as the ancient Greek word
"χριστός" ≈ "anointed one, Christ".
8. King and ruler
Jesus is also our
"King" (
Prince), in Hebrew, the
"na-geed". The
"King" is associated with the "
avenger of blood". Many details are in the book of Revelation. The ancient Greek word
"βασίλεια" ≈ "kingdom" as in
"realm". A
"basilica" is a hall of the king of the kingdom.
9. Daniel 9:21 Gabriel at vespers
Daniel 9:21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. [kjv]
The ancient Greek word
"ἡμέρᾱ" ≈ "day, time", comes from a
PIE (Proto Indo-European) root meaning "
heat", and may be relate to
"ἕσπερος" ≈ "evening" which has a connotation of "
west" as in the setting sun and to the Latin word
"vesper" ≈ "evening" and the Russian word
"вечер" (ve-sher) ≈ "evening".
10. Daniel 9:21
KJV: Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.
11. Daniel 9:22 Skill and understanding
Daniel 9:22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. [kjv]
The Greek word translated as "
informed" is that of "
made aware through understanding".
12. Daniel 9:22
KJV: And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.
13. Daniel 9:23
Daniel 9:23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. [kjv]
The Greek word translated as "
commandment" is that of "
reasoning".
The Greek word translated as "
beloved" is that of "
desire" and sometimes translated as "
lust".
The Greek word translated as "
matter" is that of "
spoken words".
14. Daniel 9:23
KJV: At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
15. Seventy and weeks
16. Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks
Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. [kjv]
[he]
Without diacritical marks, the Hebrew is the same written word for both
"seventy" and
"weeks", but the pronunciation is different. In Daniel 9:24, the word is repeated twice, once for
"seventy" and once for
"weeks".
The word for
"anointed" is the word used for
"Christ".
17. Daniel 9:24 Most holy
[kjv]
[he]
In the Greek of the
LXX (Septuagint), the
"most" "Holy" is, literally,
"Holy" "Holy", repeating the word for emphasis. Example:
"Holy" of
"holies".
[morning as early early]
18. Daniel 9:24 Septuagint
[kjv]

Seventy weeks have been determined upon your people, and upon the holy city, for sin to be ended, and to seal up transgressions, and to blot out the iniquities, and to make atonement for iniquities, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal the vision and the prophet, and to anoint the Most Holy. 19. Daniel 9:24
KJV: Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
Brenton: Seventy weeks have been determined upon your people, and upon the holy city, for sin to be ended, and to seal up transgressions, and to blot out the iniquities, and to make atonement for iniquities, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal the vision and the prophet, and to anoint the Most Holy.
Wycliffe: Seuenti woukis of yeeris ben abreggid on thi puple, and on thin hooli citee, that trespassyng be endid, and synne take an ende, and that wickidnesse be doon awei, and euerlastynge riytfulnesse be brouyt, and that the visioun, and prophesie be fillid, and the hooli of seyntis be anoyntid.
20. Daniel 9:24 Wycliffe
[kjv]
Seuenti woukis … yeeris … hooli … hooli … seyntis … anoyntid. [wy]
Wycliffe explicitly adds the Middle English word
"yeeris" ≈ "years".
The Middle English word
"hooli" ≈ "holy" become the source of the English word
"holiday" and is related to the English word
"whole".
The Middle English word
"seyntis" ≈ "saints" (older form).
21. Happy Holidays and the Wassail
English
"holiday" from Old English
"haligdæg" for
"holy day" with Germanic "
g" to English "
y".
To be physically "healthy" one was "whole". [flour, flower]
The be spiritually "whole" one was "holy", middle English "hooli".
These
"holy days" included all of the
twelve days of Christmas.
Matthew 26:5 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people. [kjv]
… freols-daige… folke. [wes]
… haliday… puple. [wy]
… holy daye … people. [ty]
22. A Greek week

The
modern Greek word
"εβδομάδα" (eh-vtho-MA-tha) ≈ "week" literally means a "
group of seven" and is made up of two parts.
The modern Greek word "επτά" (eh-PTA) ≈ "seven".
The modern Greek word "ομάδα" (o-MA-tha) ≈ "group" from which we get the word "nomad".
The
ancient Greek word
"ἑπτά" ≈ "seven" and is the source of English words such as "
heptagon" which is a polygon that has
"seven" sides.
There are octagons, heptagons, hexagons, pentagons, etc. One person got very upset when I claimed there were 2-sided polygons. How did I reconcile with that person?
I said that we should just let bi-gons by bi-gons.
23. Daniel 9:24 A Latin week
24. Daniel 9:24
[kjv]

[he]
The ancient Greek word
"ἐξελαύνω" ≈ "drive out, chase away".
"ἐλαύνω" ≈ "drive, set in motion".
The ancient Greek word
"σφραγίζω" ≈ "seal (document), close tightly"
By contrast, the ancient Greek word
"σφαγή" ≈ "slaughter, butchery".
25. Romans and Psalms : Sheep for the slaughter
Romans 8:36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. [kjv]
Psalms 44:22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. [kjv]
The ancient Greek word
"σφαγή" ≈ "slaughter, butchery" and could be the "
throat" (place where the victim is struck).
Discuss: Is this "
killed" a physical or figurative "
killing"?
Take care of your body as if you were going to live forever; and take care of your soul as if you were going to die tomorrow. Saint Augustine (Early Christian father)
26. Daniel 9:25
Daniel 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. [kjv]

27. Daniel 9:25
KJV: Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
Brenton: And you shall know and understand, that from the going forth of the command for the answer and for the building of Jerusalem until Christ the prince there shall be seven weeks, and sixty-two weeks; and then the time shall return, and the street shall be built, and the wall, and the times shall be exhausted.
28. Nehemiah 2:1,5-6 Commandment to rebuild Jerusalem
The most important part of Nehemiah, not often mentioned, is that it puts a time and date on the commandment to rebuild Jerusalem.
Nehemiah 2:1 And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence. [kjv]
2:5 And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it. [kjv]
2:6 And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time. [kjv]
The Hebrew and Babylonian month of Nison is traditionally in the spring. This precise date (e.g., in the
NIV (New International Version)), has been dated to August of 445 BC or 444 BC., about 100 years after the 70 weeks prophecy of Daniel.
Note: Ezra/Nehemiah were originally
one book, not two.
29. Nehemiah 2:1
KJV: And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.
30. Nehemiah 2:5
KJV: And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.
31. Nehemiah 2:6
KJV: And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
32. Daniel 9:26 Messiah as the anointed one
Daniel 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. [kjv]
[he]
The
"Messiah" (first coming) is cut off, not the
"King" (second coming). For whom was Jesus "
cut off"? The
LXX uses
"anointed one" which is the source of the name
"Christ".
33. Daniel 9:26 Prince that shall come
Daniel 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. [kjv]
[he]

Who are the
people who will destroy the city and the temple in 70 AD?
Who is the "
prince who shall come"? This is the source of the title of Anderson's book
The Coming Prince.
34. Roman general Titus
According to Josephus, in 70 A.D., near the end of the Jewish War (Rebellion), Roman General and future Emperor Titus did not want the temple destroyed. He ordered the 500 year old temple to be spared.
The temple caught on fire and melted the gold into the cracks the temple. To get the gold, the temple was taken apart piece by piece. Today, only the temple mount remains. This is just as Jesus had said.
35. Daniel 9:26
KJV: And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
36. Daniel 9:27 Abomination
Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. [kjv]
Daniel talks about the abomination that makes desolate. This will happen about 165 B.C., the so-called "
Silent Years".
The "
prince that shall come" is usually take to be the end-times person who is the political, economic and military leader of the world. He shall make a peace covenant and, in the middle of it, cause "
abominations".
The Septuagint says just
"Messiah" or "
Christ" not the
"King" or
"Prince" (which would be the second coming).
When exactly is this week? For the sacrifice and oblation to cease, it must have started? And there must be a temple? Right?
37. Daniel 9:27
KJV: And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
38. Olivet discourse
Jesus will refer to this event during the "
silent years" in the Olivet discourse as a future end-times event.
Matthew 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand: ) [kjv]
Jesus expects you to
read and
understand this. At least two things are required for everyone to
"see" (with understanding) this abomination in the Holy of Holies.
The temple in Jerusalem must be rebuilt. The Jews are ready but a Muslim mosque is standing there.

39. Matthew 24:15
KJV: When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand: )
40. Prophetic years in the Bible
Revelation 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. [kjv]
A prophetic year in the Bible appears to consist of
360 day years.
There are 360 day years in Genesis.
There are 360 day years in Revelation.
An important three and a half year period is given in many ways to make sure that it is clear.
Sackcloth is black.
41. Seventy year captivity
Once, in a Sunday School talking about Daniel and the Babylonian Captivity (mid 1980's), I brought up the "
seventy year" captivity.
The pastor, with a somewhat sarcastic smile and in a somewhat humorous way (as was his style) said, "
It was only sixty-nine years" and moved on.
Later I discovered that 70 years of prophetic 360 day years differs from our (about) 365.2422 days per solar year by 2 days.
69*365.2422 = 25,202 days
70*360= 25,200 days
Thus, the
70 prophetic years is within
2 days of
69 actual years. Pretty close.
42. Prophetic years
About 2005, I thought about prophetic years and decided to see what was happening 40 prophetic years before the 9/11 terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Excel spreadsheet to the rescue.
One close event to April 9, 1962, 40 prophetic years before the 9/11 attack, was the deliberations in the Supreme Court to ban prayer in public school.
Note: The difference of 40 solar years and 40 prophetic years is about 40*5.25 days or 210 days or
6.84 months.
43. April 1962
The case was argued in the Supreme Court on April 3, 1962, 40 prophetic years and 6 days before the 9/11 attack. Pretty close.
Can anyone see any connection between the two events? Perhaps not.
The announcement of the decision was on June 25, 1962. What were you doing then?
Here is a photo from St. Paul's Vacation Bible School from June 29, 1962. Four days earlier the Supreme Court decision to ban prayer in public school was announced.
Teachers started to change how classes were conducted and taught when the school year began that September.
45. Calculations: count the days
Here are the calculations for the sixty-nine week prophecy of Daniel.
7 weeks of years = 49 years
62 weeks of years = 434
49 + 434 = 483 years
a prophetic year is 360 days
486*360 = 173,800 days
173,800 / 365.25 = 475.84
445.58 - 475.84 + 1 = 31.26
So
173,800 days from August of
445/444 BC is
March/April of
31/32 AD. Go back about
33 years and one gets
3/2 BC. Go forward
38 prophetic years to the predicted destruction of the temple.
46. Timeline: Prophecy of Daniel
Decree to rebuild:
173,800 days after early August of
445 BC is
March/April of
31 AD.
Temple destruction:
14,400 days before early September of
70 AD is
March/April of
31 AD.
It had to happen at this time. There was
no other way. [one drop of blood fallacy]
Matthew 26:39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. [kjv]
47. Matthew 26:39
KJV: And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
48. Seven days without God makes one weak
Genesis 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. [kjv]
2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. [kjv]
The prime number "
seven" is related among many
PIE languages and is the basis of the seven day week going back to Genesis.
The English word "
week" is related to many other words involving a "
turning" as in one weekly cycle turning into another cycle.
