Matthew 7:21-23 Sermon on the Mount before the summary
1. Matthew 7:21-23 Sermon on the Mount before the summary
2. Matthew 7:21-23
Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. [kjv]
7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? [kjv]
7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. [kjv]
These
three verses seem somewhat out of place at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, right
before the summary of the houses on rock and sand.
Trying to connect these verses in sequence can lead to some strange results. If one puts then in the context of the TenWordPin model, they can make more sense.

6. Matthew 5:17-20 TenWordPin
In the TenWordPin model, this sequence of
four verses after the Beatitudes and the first sequence of seven is completed by
three verses right before the summary of the houses on rock and sand at the end of the Sermon on the Mount.
Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. [kjv]
5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. [kjv]
5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]
5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]
7. Matthew 5:17 Leave the light on
Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. [kjv]
μη νομισητε οτι ηλθον καταλυσαι τον νομον η τους προφητας ουκ ηλθον καταλυσαι αλλα πληρωσαι [gnt]
Paraphrase:
Do not Think (law wise) that I came to reside (make a nest as a bird) in the law or the prophets (like a bird in a nest). I came not to reside but to complete (which may require taking some things away).
What things might need to be taken away?
Can those things be taken away?
The next verse helps answer these questions.
8. Matthew 5:18 Jots and tittles
Matthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. [kjv]
αμην γαρ λεγω υμιν εως αν παρελθη ο ουρανος και η γη ιωτα εν η μια κεραια ου μη παρελθη απο του νομου εως αν παντα γενηται [gnt]
Paraphrase:
It is so that until heaven and earth pass by, not one jot (spots, blemishes, empty opinion) nor one tittle (horns, invalid logic, extra rules) will pass by from man's viewpoint (but all will pass by from God's viewpoint) until all (the new heaven and new earth) come into being.
[opinion not put under a measure but held up for all in the birdhouse]
9. Matthew 5:18 Jots and tittles
Matthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. [kjv]
αμην γαρ λεγω υμιν εως αν παρελθη ο ουρανος και η γη ιωτα εν η μια κεραια ου μη παρελθη απο του νομου εως αν παντα γενηται [gnt]
Will the religious establishment be upset if you remove any
"jots" (blemishes, personal opinions, etc.) or
"tittles" (extra rules, invalid logic, etc.) that are used to oppress the faithful and support their (false) house (nest and belly)?
How might the religious establishment react? What might they do? Jesus addresses this in the
next two verses (and thereafter).
10. Matthew 5:19 Birdhouse rules
Matthew 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]
ος εαν ουν λυση μιαν των εντολων τουτων των ελαχιστων και διδαξη ουτως τους ανθρωπους ελαχιστος κληθησεται εν τη βασιλεια των ουρανων ος δ αν ποιηση και διδαξη ουτος μεγας κληθησεται εν τη βασιλεια των ουρανων [gnt]
Paraphrase:
Whoever breaks the least of the rules established by the bird for the birdhouse, and teaches others in that birdhouse to do so, will be called least in that birdhouse. But whoever does and teaches those rules shall be called great in the birdhouse.
To "
preach" or "
teach" in the
birdhouse, one must espouse the views or "
righteousness",
not of God or Jesus, but of the lead
bird. Saying:
You'll be birdseed.
[city/many on a hill cannot be hid]
As in the "
peacemaker" verse, 10 verses earlier, Jesus does
not say who it is who is doing the
"calling". The paraphrase fits any
human organization. This meaning does not necessarily make the traditional interpretation invalid.
[good and bad salt, good and bad light, good and bad houses]
12. Matthew 5:20 Righteous birds
Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]
λεγω γαρ υμιν οτι εαν μη περισσευση υμων η δικαιοσυνη πλειον των γραμματεων και φαρισαιων ου μη εισελθητε εις την βασιλειαν των ουρανων [gnt]
Paraphrase:
Except your righteousness (as defined by the birds) exceeds the righteousness of those birds, you shall not enter and/or be promoted as a member of that birdhouse.
When will "
pigs" be allowed to become "
birds"?
When pigs fly!
Unlike an earlier verse, there is no "
amen" or "
verily" or even "
blessed" starting this verse. The
"righteousness" can be God's
"righteousness" or man's
"righteousness" (or both). Context is important.
[good and bad salt, good and bad light, good and bad houses]
14. Jots and tittle verses
Many say that one should read the Bible as a book. This assumes that each part leads to the next part. When patterns exist, one should connect the patterns.
[Bart Ehrman]
15. Matthew 7:21-23 Sermon on the Mount before the summary
[kjv]
There is a
surprise waiting. The verses for the "
houses" built on "
rock" and on "
sand" follow which end the Sermon on the Mount.
How valuable is a "prophet's" "reward"?
How valuable is a "righteous" or "ministering" reward? Think "goats" in the parable of the "sheep" and "goats".
If one is not of God, can one actually "
cast out" "
devils" since that would "
divide" the "
house" (built on sand)? The Greek word for
"profess" is that of "
agree" as in "
same reasoning" and often translated as
"confess".
In the TenWordPin model, this sequence of
three verses completes
four verses after the Beatitudes and the first sequence of seven.
16. Matthew 7:21 Will of the Father
17. Matthew 7:21 Heaven
Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. [kjv]
ου πας ο λεγων μοι κυριε κυριε εισελευσεται εις την βασιλειαν των ουρανων αλλ ο ποιων το θελημα του πατρος μου του εν τοις ουρανοις [gnt]
Jesus uses the ancient Greek word
"οὐρανός" ≈ "sky, heaven" with a good, neutral or bad (i.e., not good) connotation based on the case used. A neutral meaning could have multiple meanings or may need context to determine the connotation.
"οὐρανοῖς" ≈ "heavens" (dative plural) has a good meaning.
"οὐρανῶν," ≈ "sky, heavens" (genitive plural) has a neutral meaning.
"οὐρανοῦ" ≈ "heaven, sky" (genitive singular) and has a bad meaning.
"ουρά" ≈ "tail" and "νου" ≈ "of the mind" (genitive singular)
Some will make deep theological meanings, rationalizations, etc., based on the singular or plural of the word. It appears that the inflection has more to do with a good, neutral or bad connotation.
18. Matthew 7:21 Will of the Father
Which is
more important?
What you think?
What you know?
What you say?
What you do?
There are a number of parables that relate to this distinction. Those who do "
the will of my Father which is in heaven" may have to ignore the wolf and suffer some form of persecution - from the church in addition to persecution from the world.
Paraphrase:
... he that does the desire of my Father ...
19. Matthew 7:21
KJV: Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Greek: ου πας ο λεγων μοι κυριε κυριε εισελευσεται εις την βασιλειαν των ουρανων αλλ ο ποιων το θελημα του πατρος μου του εν τοις ουρανοις
20. Matthew 21:28-32 Will of the Father
Matthew 21:28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. [kjv]
21:29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. [kjv]
21:30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not. [kjv]
21:31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. [kjv]
21:32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him. [kjv]
Is it more important what you think, what you say, or what you do?
Is anyone going into the "Kingdom of God"? Who is not going in?
21. Matthew 21:31 Logical analysis
Matthew 21:31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you. [kjv]
τις εκ των δυο εποιησεν το θελημα του πατρος λεγουσιν ο υστερος λεγει αυτοις ο ιησους αμην λεγω υμιν οτι οι τελωναι και αι πορναι προαγουσιν υμας εις την βασιλειαν του θεου [gnt]
Matthew uses
"kingdom" of
"God" and
not the
"kingdom" of
"heaven/air". Is there a difference? If so, is it important?
Many attribute this saying to
hyperbole or, essentially, an
opinion. A
logical analysis of this verse is that, with probability approaching certainty,
no religious elite who mislead the faithful for their own greatness will enter the
"kingdom" of
"God".
Who are the
"first"? Who are the
"last"? Who are the
"many"? Who are
not the
"many"?
22. Kingdom of heaven build
Jesus appears to make a
logical statement. If not, one can use
opinion to make it say many other things.
Are any of man's "
righteous" (without God) going in?
Sinners who have changed.
Sinners who have not changed.
Birds (religious elite) who have oppressed others. Are these the "first" that will be "last"? How many "sparrows" will fall without God?
Sinners who entered the Kingdom of God. Are these the "last" that will be "first"?
In particular, if there is even one tax collector or harlot that does not get into the kingdom of God, then neither do any of the religious elite to which Jesus refers.
23. Matthew 21:29 Repent
Matthew 21:29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. [kjv]
ο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν εγω κυριεκαι ουκ απηλθεν [gnt]

The ancient Greek word
"μεταμέλεια" ≈ "change of purpose, regret, repentance" which is the modern idea of the Latin-based
"repent". This word has to do with
observed behavior and
not inferred attitude.
The ancient Greek word
"μετάνοια" ≈ "afterthought, think after" where the
"repent" (changed behavior) comes from the Latin and
not the Greek.
24. Matthew 7:22 Dative the
Matthew 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? [kjv]
πολλοι ερουσιν μοι εν εκεινη τη ημερα κυριε κυριε ου τω σω ονοματι επροφητευσαμεν και τω σω ονοματι δαιμονια εξεβαλομεν και τω σω ονοματι δυναμεις πολλας εποιησαμεν [gnt]

The ancient Greek word
"σός" ≈ "your, yours". The ancient Greek word
"σῷ" ≈ "your" (dative) and can be understood as referring to something "
with respect to".
26. Matthew 7:22 With respect to your name
"ὄνομα" ≈ "name, noun" is related to Latin
"nomen" ≈ "name, noun" (semantic loan from Greek) and English
"name".
"τῷ" ≈ "the" (dative).
"σῷ" ≈ "your" (dative).
"ὀνόματι" ≈ "name" (dative).
Paraphrase:
... (with respect) to the your name ...
This phrase appears
three times in the verse.
27. Matthew 7:22 Many
Matthew 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? [kjv]
πολλοι ερουσιν μοι εν εκεινη τη ημερα κυριε κυριε ου τω σω ονοματι επροφητευσαμεν και τω σω ονοματι δαιμονια εξεβαλομεν και τω σω ονοματι δυναμεις πολλας εποιησαμεν [gnt]
"πολύς" ≈ "many" (accent on second/last syllable).
"πόλις" ≈ "city" (accent on first syllable).
Many claim to have done
many. The Greek for
"city" can be a play on words with
"many". There are
"many" in a
"city". and
"many" that are in the "
wide area". A
"city" on a "
hill" cannot be "
hid" (the false light of the world, not in a good sense).
28. Matthew 7:22 Wonderful works
The Greek word usually translated as "
works" is
not used here. The translator makes the assumption that they are
"wonderful" (not in the Greek).
The ancient Greek word
"δύναμις" ≈ "power, might, strength, potentiality" and is used by
Aristotle for something that has
"potential".
29. Matthew 7:22 Cast out devils
"δαίμων" ≈ "demon". A demon is an evil and supernatural malicious spirit.
The Latin word "daemon" ≈ "demon" .
The Middle English word "demon" ≈ "demon".
How would one
know that one has actually "
cast out" a
"demon"?
30. Matthew 7:22 Three claims to greatness
The following are claimed to have been done
with respect to His name.
prophesied
cast out devils
done many potentialities
Some churches boast of the great work they have done for the community, without mention of any preaching of the "
Good News" or other Christian connection.
Some may say that they are carrying the light to the world. The name "
Lucifer" means "
carrying light" so one must be careful as to the light one is carrying.
31. Matthew 7:22
KJV: Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Greek: πολλοι ερουσιν μοι εν εκεινη τη ημερα κυριε κυριε ου τω σω ονοματι προεφητευσαμεν επροφητευσαμεν και τω σω ονοματι δαιμονια εξεβαλομεν και τω σω ονοματι δυναμεις πολλας εποιησαμεν
Latin: multi dicent mihi in illa die Domine Domine nonne in nomine tuo prophetavimus et in tuo nomine daemonia eiecimus et in tuo nomine virtutes multas fecimus
Wycliffe: Many schulen seie to me in that dai, Lord, Lord, whether we han not prophesied in thi name, and han caste out feendis in thi name, and han doon many vertues in thi name?
Tyndale: Many will saye to me in that daye Master master have we not in thy name prophesied? And in thy name have caste oute devyls? And in thy name have done many miracles?
32. Matthew 7:23 Profess
Matthew 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. [kjv]
και τοτε ομολογησω αυτοις οτι ουδεποτε εγνων υμας αποχωρειτε απ εμου οι εργαζομενοι την ανομιαν [gnt]
The ancient Greek word
"ὁμολογέω" ≈ "make an agreement, agree" and means, literally,
"same reasoning" or
"same explanation" and can be
"same word" if "
word" is taken as "
reasoning".
The
KJV (King James Version) often translates this word as
"confess" which, today, does not fit the original Greek meaning.
What is the
"agreement" in this (and, perhaps, the preceding) verse? That is, the person makes a statement and Jesus
"agrees" with that statement. The issue is that something other than what was done was expected.
33. Strongs - depart
34. Usage - depart
- *G672 *3 ἀποχωρέω (ap-okh-o-reh'-o) : from G575 and G5562; to go away:--depart.

- αποχωρει
- Luke 9:39 ... bruising him hardly departeth from him.

και τοτε ομολογησω αυτοις οτι ουδεποτε εγνων υμας αποχωρειτε απ εμου οι εργαζομενοι την ανομιαν [gnt]
The ancient Greek word
"ἔργον" ≈ "deed, achievement, work, labor". The primary meaning is
abstract and not
concrete. The ancient Greek word
"ἐργάζομαι" ≈ "work at, labor". Compare and contrast the following.
I have many achievements/deeds.
I have done many works/labors.
37. Matthew 7:23 Working iniquity
"ἄνεμος" ≈ "wind, breeze, gale".
"ἄνομος" ≈ "without law".
The ancient Greek word
"ἄνεμος" ≈ "wind, breeze, gale" and often used in verses with Satan or the devil as "
accuser" throwing/breathing accusations.
The ancient Greek word
"ἄνομος" ≈ "without law" which could be
"lawless",
"impious",
"unmusical",
"illegal", etc.

Who is
"them"? Is this a case of "
sour grapes"? How about "
dried grapes"? Just
raisin the issue.
Why might this be? Discuss.

42. Matthew 7:21-23 Audience
[kjv]
The Greek for
"iniquity" is that of going "
against the law". That is, "
against the law" of God.
What are God's laws?
How would one go against them?
The people who need to "
depart" think they have been doing good. Were they actually "
lawless"? Did they work
"iniquity"? Were they in any way "
against the law" of God? Did they "
misinterpret"?

μη νομισητε οτι ηλθον καταλυσαι τον νομον η τους προφητας ουκ ηλθον καταλυσαι αλλα πληρωσαι [gnt]
Jesus did not come to
"reside" in the

"complete" which might require taking things away. That is, "
shortening" the "
days".
