Sermon on the Mount connections

1. Sermon on the Mount connections
Two pages have been combined into one. Some parts that are redundant need to be smoothed out.

2. Puzzle pieces and models
Puzzle missing pieces
Each insight at one place to what Jesus appears to mean from what he says, in context, acts as a puzzle piece to determine what a similar phrase means in another discourse.
Each underlined word has a deep and technical meaning in the field of programming language theory and in computation theory as part of the general field of computer science.

Discuss:

3. Error correcting codes
Fault tolerance is important in distributed systems and in organizations.

Redundancy can be used to detect and correct errors (discrepancies).
An understanding of FTC (Fault Tolerant Computing) techniques and that of an ECC (Error Correcting Code) are important in understanding the differences in various Bible texts.

The key to fault tolerance is redundancy. The simplest model is to use redundancy and take a majority vote of the various ways. There are many more advanced methods not discussed here.

4. Matthew 5:9-12 Persecution verses
Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [kjv]
5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]
5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. [kjv]
5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. [kjv]

What does "blessed" mean?

What does "persecute" mean?

What does "kingdom of heaven" mean?

What does "righteousness" mean?

5. Matthew 7:21-23
Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. [kjv]
7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? [kjv]
7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. [kjv]

These three verses seem somewhat out of place at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, right before the summary of the houses on rock and sand.

Trying to connect these verses in sequence can lead to some strange results. If one puts then in the context of the TenWordPin model, they can make more sense.

6. Sermon on the Mount connections
There are some interesting connections of the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount to other parts of scripture, including other parts of the Sermon on the Mount.
The Beatitudes can be connected to church history and with the Kingdom Parables and with the letters to the seven churches in Revelation. Redundancy and fault tolerant principles can be used to provide additional meaning to the Beatitudes.

7. Historical interpretation of church history
* Churches Parables Beatitudes Church ages
1 Ephesus Sower Poor in Spirit Jesus and the Good News
2 Smyrna Weeds They that mourn Roman persecutions
3 Pergamus Mustard Meek inherit Roman acceptance
4 Thyatira Leaven Hunger and thirst Catholic Church
5 Sardis Treasure Merciful and alms Protestant Reformation
6 Philadelphia Pearl Pure in heart Great Awakenings
7 Laodicea Harvest Peacemakers Apostate church age

Time periodsIf you do not like the historical interpretation, as prophecy, just use the model to remember the order of the Churches, Parables and Beatitudes.

8. Pattern
Let us match up the following verses. Matthew 5:1-2 is the introduction of the 111 verses of the Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 7:24 starts the summary with the houses built on rock and sand. Let us now look at each row of the table.

9. Sermon on the Mount : Matthew 5:1-20

10. Matthew 11:5-6 Verses
Jesus relates what should be told to John the Baptist (in prison).
Matthew 11:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. [kjv]

Jesus then says that "happy" is he who does not "misinterpret" or "entrap themselves" in Him.
11:6 And blessed is he, who soever shall not be offended in me. [kjv]
και μακαριος εστιν ος αν μη σκανδαλισθη εν εμοι [gnt]

Let us match up the first six Beatitudes (in order) with the six parts of Matthew 11:5 (reverse order) and then match the seventh Beatitude with Matthew 11:6.

11. Comparison summary
Here is a summary table of the comparison of the parts of Matthew 11:5 (reverse order) and Matthew 11:6 and the Beatitudes.

* Beatitudes Matthew 11:5‑6 ASK
1 Poor in Spirit 6. Gospel preached receive Good News
2 They that mourn 5. dead woken up receive comfort
3. Meek inherit 4. deaf hear listen and called to inherit grace
4. Hunger and thirst 3. lepers cleansed outside pure and satisfied ask
5. Merciful and alms 2. lame walk alms taker to alms giver seek
6. Pure in heart 1. blind see inside pure and satisfied knock
7. Peacemakers 7. misinterpret danger of self‑deception
The rest of the Sermon on the Mount (102 verses) fills out these details. Much of this has to do with what to do, what not to do, and deceptions or traps to avoid.

12. Salt of the earth verses
sheep Sheep
Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. [kjv]

birds Bird
5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. [kjv]

fish Fish
5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. [kjv]

pigs Pig
5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. [kjv]

House on sand wordsThese ideas will be in the summary of the houses built on rock and sand at the end of the Sermon on the Mount.
Words in these verses may be code words, have double meanings, be play on words, etc. The Greek words may have been changed (mistranslated), omitted, etc. [top-down view]

14. Beatitudes summary
Here is a quick summary of the Beatitudes. Each starts with "Blessed are". To not be negative, most series of ARMS (Attractive Refrigerator Magnet Sermons) stop at number 6 or 7. The Sermon on the Mount then starts with "salt of the earth" and ends with the "house built on sand".

15. Attractive refrigerator magnet sermons
A "refrigerator magnet sermon" is a sermon that is quite "attractive" but contains little meaningful content. Such sermons can be preached in any church. A euphemism for a "refrigerator magnet sermon" is ARMS.

When someone asks you what you thought of the church or sermon, you can say: Note: A "refrigerator magnet sermon" not of the polarity of the congregation is "repulsive" unlike actual magnets where opposite poles attract.

16. Table
Matthew 11:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. [kjv]

Six noun‑verb pairs
1. blind sight
2. lame walk
3. lepers cleansed
4. deaf hear
5. dead raised
6. poor gospel
These signs are recognized as "signs" of the Messiah. Is there a deeper meaning?

Jesus cites six pairs of nouns (representing people) and verbs (representing actions), shortened for table and discussion purposes.
Vertical keyJesus often uses double meanings here the nouns represent something else while the verbs are carefully chosen. This requires looking at the Greek words in more detail.

17. Matthew 11:5-6 Bottom-up forward-chaining
Message of Jesus to John the Baptist (in physical prison):
Matthew 11:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. [kjv]

Six noun‑verb pairs decoded
6. poor=fallenbeggars start gospel=good news preached
5. dead=asleep then raised=wake up you deadhead
4. deaf=not listening then hear=listen and understand repent
3. lepers=sinners then cleansed=be born againcleansed in the blood Ask
2. lame=passive then walk=active start walking in righteousness Seek
1. blind=not seeing then sight=look up/ahead and see God & others Knock
The top-down verses (in English) may be more understandable as a bottom-up progression (as events unfold in time) using the Greek meanings of the words. Approaches to change: (stop, repent, be cleansed and walk).

20. Review of misinterpretations
Matthew 11:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. [kjv]
11:6 And blessed is he, who soever shall not be offended in me. [kjv]

Having discovered a deeper meaning to Matthew 11:5, how might someone "misinterpret" what Jesus has said?
  • What should the church be doing?
  • What should believers be doing?
Discuss: Do churches or believers ever get "ensnared" or "misinterpret" in helping the poor, the blind, those without clothes, in prison, etc., and lose sight of the real purpose of Jesus? Many of those words used by Jesus have double meanings.

How many are like those picked by Gideon?

21. Inferred word
One can infer the word "blessed" or "happy" (same word in the Greek) for each if the parts of Matthew 11:6. One might assume that those to whom the action was done were "blessed" or "happy".

6. Blessed Happy those to whom Gospel preached
5. Blessed Happy those dead woken up
4. Blessed Happy those deaf hearing
3. Blessed Happy those lepers cleansed
2. Blessed Happy those lame walking
1. Blessed Happy those blind seeing
7. Blessed Happy those not deceived
If the "Blessed" or "Happy" had been added to each part by Jesus, the patterns presented would have been much easier to detect.

22. The beggars hear the Good News
RC: Ephesus. KP: Sower and seed (sheep vs. birds, pigs, fish).
Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. [kjv]
11:5 … and the poor have the gospel preached to them. [kjv]
5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]
5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. [kjv]

SheepJesus did not come to "reside" or make a "nest" in the "law". Those who were "poor" in "spirit" and "begging" for the "Good News", now have that "Good News" preached to them as part of the "kingdom of heaven". You are to let the true "light" of Jesus shine through your "good" "works".

25. The dead are woken up
RC: Smyrna. KP: Weeds (seeds planted by birds, seeds are the birds, grow into weeds).
Matthew 11:5 … the dead are raised up, … [kjv]
5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. [kjv]
5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. [kjv]
5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. [kjv]

BirdBlessed are they who were "dead" in Christ and "mourning" (reflexively) for they shall be "raised" and "comforted" with the "Good News". Those who are "dead" in "Christ" are "woken up" after "hearing" the "Good News". They are "comforted" instead of "mourning", reflexively for themselves and for others.
Various heresies (weeds) start to arise. Leaders pull out a (false light) candle to create (false) kingdoms and mountains and houses.

26. The dead are woken up
Matthew 11:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. [kjv]

27. The deaf hear with understanding
RC: Pergamum. KP: Mustard seed, tree, birds (make nest in the tree, the mountain moved).
Matthew 11:5 … and the deaf hear, … [kjv]
5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. [kjv]
5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. [kjv]
5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]

FishAs the meek inherit the secular power of the earth in the fourth century, rivers of fish are attracted to the true light and to the false light on the mountain in the sea of humanity.
The Greek for "hear" assumes "understanding". Those who had "shut out" the "gospel" now "meekly" "hear" and "listen" and are "called" to "inherit" the "kingdom" in the "new" "heaven" and "new" "earth". The "meek" "hear" with "understanding" and "think about" what they "hear" and, as appropriate, "change" their "behavior" to go along with their "changed" "thinking".

The Greek word for "inherit" is made up of the words for "called" and "custom" or "law". One cannot "inherit" if one does not recognize the "call" of the "customs" or "law" of God.

29. The lepers are cleansed on the outside
RC: Thyatira. KP: Woman and leaven (the mountain of definitions moved)
Matthew 11:5 … the lepers are cleansed, … [kjv]
5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. [kjv]
5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. [kjv]
5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]

PigDuring this time, some "fish", who become "sheep", are promoted as "pigs" to be leaders and/or enforcers, to influence others, sometimes using physical force. These "pigs" work for the "birds".
Those "unclean" from the "guilt" and "shame" of the ways of the world, who have "hungered" and "thirsted" for "righteousness", are now "cleansed" as in "made pure", and "washed" in the "blood" and ready to be "satisfied" in their "walk" in "righteousness".

This appears to be the idea of "prevenient" "grace" in action (previous steps) leading to this step of "ask". This is the "ask" part of the "ask" "seek" "knock" sequence.

30. The lepers are cleansed on the outside
Matthew 11:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. [kjv]

31. The lame walk
RC: Sardis. KP: Treasure in a field (hid and re-hid)
Matthew 11:5 … and the lame walk, … [kjv]
5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. [kjv]
5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. [kjv]
7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. [kjv]

SheepLeading up to and during the Reformation, the idea of "mercy" becomes important. Those who have followed the basic principles, without being side-tracked as a "bird" or "pig", have a true reward in heaven. The "birds" and "pigs" lead the way in the "persecution".
Those who were "lame" or "not doing anything important" and waiting for "mercy" in the form of "alms" now "walk" in "righteousness" having received the "alms" or "mercy" of the "Good News" and can now provide "mercy" to others.

The "lame" go from "alms" or "mercy" taker to "alms" or "mercy" giver. This is the "seek" part of the "ask" "seek" "knock" sequence.

33. The blind see
RC: Philadelphia. KP: One pearl of great price.
Matthew 11:5 The blind receive their sight, … [kjv]
5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. [kjv]
5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. [kjv]
7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? [kjv]

FishDuring this time, persecution continues on the pure in heart as verbal and physical attacks. The "fish" are mobilized to "talk" and make innuendos, etc., against the "sheep".
Those denominational churches (Sardis) with a "name" are now, in Philadelphia, doing works as the word "name" appears three times in Matthew 7:22.

That is, those who were "blind", having gone through the previous steps, are "pure" in "heart", with no ulterior motives, not deceiving or oppressing others, and now "look up" and "see" God and others. This is the "knock" part of the "ask" "seek" "knock" sequence. [Separation of sea creatures: good and rotten (against the laws, misinterpret Jesus)]

34. The blind see
Matthew 11:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. [kjv]
τυφλοι αναβλεπουσιν και χωλοι περιπατουσιν λεπροι καθαριζονται και κωφοι ακουουσιν και νεκροι εγειρονται και πτωχοι ευαγγελιζονται [gnt]
5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. [kjv]
μακαριοι οι καθαροι τη καρδια οτι αυτοι τον θεον οψονται [gnt]
5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. [kjv]
μακαριοι εστε οταν ονειδισωσιν υμας και διωξωσιν και ειπωσιν παν πονηρον καθ υμων ψευδομενοι ενεκεν εμου [gnt]
7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? [kjv]

35. Interpretation
RC: Laodicea (apostate church). KP: Harvest at the end of the age.
Matthew 11:6 And blessed is he, who soever shall not be offended in me. [kjv]
5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [kjv]
5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]
7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. [kjv]

BirdJesus then says that "happy" is he who does not "misinterpret" or "entrap themselves" in what Jesus says.
Those who "make" "peace" by "compromise" are "called" "great" by the "world" and are "happy" with themselves. The "persecution" continues by the "pigs", having been initiated and supported by the "birds" at the top. The Greek for "iniquity" is, literally, "against the law" as in against the two fundamental laws - love God and love neighbor as yourself.

[No separation of the birds - those who deceive and use others for their own glory/opinion]

36. Interpretation
Matthew 11:6 And blessed is he, who soever shall not be offended in me. [kjv]
και μακαριος εστιν ος αν μη σκανδαλισθη εν εμοι [gnt]
5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [kjv]
μακαριοι οι ειρηνοποιοι οτι αυτοι υιοι θεου κληθησονται [gnt]
5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]
μακαριοι οι δεδιωγμενοι ενεκεν δικαιοσυνης οτι αυτων εστιν η βασιλεια των ουρανων [gnt]
7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. [kjv]
και τοτε ομολογησω αυτοις οτι ουδεποτε εγνων υμας αποχωρειτε απ εμου οι εργαζομενοι την ανομιαν [gnt]

37. Observation
The parts of Matthew 11:5 were presented by Jesus in a top-down manner. They make more sense to most people in a bottom-up manner (i.e., reverse order of the ideas presented).

The Greek words often have other meanings than in the translation of the KJV (King James Version). Adjusting for this helps in understanding and seeing the bigger picture.

Once the first six Beatitudes (in order) and the six parts of Matthew 11-5 (in reverse order) are connected, the next Beatitude and Matthew 11:7 connect in an interesting way.

38. Interpretation
Jesus then says that "happy" is he who does not "misinterpret" or "entrap themselves" in what Jesus says.
Matthew 11:6 And blessed is he, who soever shall not be offended in me. [kjv]
και μακαριος εστιν ος αν μη σκανδαλισθη εν εμοι [gnt]

Those who "appease" the "world" or "compromise" with the "world" in order to "make peace" are "called" "children of God" by the "world" and are "happy" with themselves. They appear to have "misinterpreted" or "entrapped themselves" with what Jesus is saying and may end up not being "happy".

5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [kjv]
μακαριοι οι ειρηνοποιοι οτι αυτοι υιοι θεου κληθησονται [gnt]

40. Pink elephant
Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. [kjv]

Don't even think of parking here! Don't even think of thinking here!

Have you ever heard a sermon about not worrying and all the pastor talks about are things that you might be worried about?

Child's game: Go into a corner and try not to think about a pink elephant. [Tolstoy] To "muse" is to "think". The word "amuse" means, literally, to "not think".

41. Genesis 3:2-3 Commutative symmetry
Genesis 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: [kjv]
και ειπεν η γυνη τω οφει απο καρπου ξυλου του παραδεισου φαγομεθα [lxx]
3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. [kjv]
απο δε καρπου του ξυλου ο εστιν εν μεσω του παραδεισου ειπεν ο θεος ου φαγεσθε απ αυτου ουδε μη αψησθε αυτου ινα μη αποθανητε [lxx]

Apple
How much of a sin is passive "anger"? Just thinking!
How much of a sin is passive "adultery"? Just looking! [Schneier: How many ways can you get free pancakes in a restaurant without involving the cash exchange system?]
This Greek word for "touch" was changed to "light" (as a "fire") for the candles in Luke. Matthew was then interpreted (changed words) to have a "candle" that was on "fire" or "lit".

42. Genesis 3:3 Added rules
Genesis 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. [kjv]

5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]
5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. [kjv]

These are the most important parts of what you are to do. The others are mostly warnings on heresies, deceptions, etc.

Here is a summary build of the progression. The verse structure is as follows.

Matthew 5:27-32: adultery/separation Verse groups:

47. Matthew 18:18 Before and after
Midst 2 Midst 3 Remove the wall between you and Jesus. Put up a wall between you and those that would entrap you (to be great).

Matthew 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. [kjv]

Midst 4 Midst 5
Jesus, as Holy Spirit, is "in" the "heart" of the "little one", hopefully "you", for the "ages", until He comes again.
Only you can separate yourself from the love of Christ.

Do you see a connection between the before and after?

48. Matthew 5:33-37 Reasoning about oaths - yes no
Matthew 5:33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: [kjv]
5:34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: [kjv]
5:35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. [kjv]
5:36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. [kjv]
5:37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. [kjv]

A reasoning about "oaths" and "swearing" is covered here. The "head" and "hairs" are covered separately.

[concrete vs. abstract, doing vs. saying vs. thinking]
