Tyndale: Moreoure when ye faste be not sad as ye ypocrytes are. For they disfigure their faces that they myght be sene of me how they faste. Verely I say vnto you they have their rewarde.

2. Matthew 6:17
   Matthew 6:17

KJV: But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;
Greek: συ δε νηστευων αλειψαι σου την κεφαλην και το προσωπον σου νιψαι

3. Matthew 6:18
   Matthew 6:18

KJV: That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
Greek: οπως μη φανης τοις ανθρωποις νηστευων αλλα τω πατρι σου τω εν τω κρυπτω κρυφαιω και ο πατηρ σου ο βλεπων εν τω κρυπτω κρυφαιω αποδωσει σοι εν τω φανερω

4. Matthew 6:16-18 Verses
Matthew 6:16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. [kjv]
6:17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; [kjv]
6:18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. [kjv]

Let us back up a few verses for context.

5. Matthew 6:1-2 The right secret left with alms
Matthew 6:1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. [kjv]

6:2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. [kjv]

Hate and reward
6:1: you have no reward [hate] of your Father ...
6:2: they have their reward [hate].
These verses are a setup for the Lord's Prayer five verses later in Matthew 6:9. The TR (Textus Receptus) changed the Greek word for "righteousness" to "alms" to match the following three verses,

Doing what is "right" is what is "righteous" and is related to "opinion", "glory" and "law". One must always determine if what is meant is God's "righteousness" or man's "righteousness" (or both).

6. Matthew 6:9-13 Lord's Prayer in Matthew
The Lord's prayer is in Matthew 6:9-13. The immediate context includes Matthew 6:7-15.

As with any verses, the context of the Lord's Prayer is important. The general context is in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount.
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.
Amen.

7. Versions
Here are some common versions of part of the Lord's Prayer.

Which is most correct?

Which is harder to do?

Discuss: Is this requirement a minimum or a maximum requirement?
How many try to get by with as little as possible, to game the system, to find loopholes, to fulfill the technicality of what is required?

10. Matthew 6:12-15: Forget about the debts, sins and trespasses
Matthew 6:14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: [kjv]
εαν γαρ αφητε τοις ανθρωποις τα παραπτωματα αυτων αφησει και υμιν ο πατηρ υμων ο ουρανιος [gnt]
6:15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. [kjv]
εαν δε μη αφητε τοις ανθρωποις τα παραπτωματα αυτων ουδε ο πατηρ υμων αφησει τα παραπτωματα υμων [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "ἄφες""let go, forgive". What are we to "let go" of?

The word often translated as "trespass" is the ancient Greek word "παράπτωσις""impetuous pursuit, going astray". The parts of the word mean, literally, going "beyond falling" as in "fault" of imperfection. A general English phrase for this might be "stupid things" that are done (by you or others).

Might these "stupid things" for which we are to "let go" include what is described in the verses that immediately follow?

11. Verses in Matthew 14-33
SM slice 5
TenPin 7

This sequence in the Sermon on the Mount is a reverse sequence. After "thieves" "tunnel" into your "heart" in node 5, the "fasting" in node 6 having to do with "tradition", having a "pure" "heart", etc., appears to be a way to take you to node 7 as in being a "peacemaker" to the "world" and, in effect, "killing" oneself.

12. Fast food disappearing
What fast food does Jesus give to you?

The English word "bistro" comes from the French word "bistro""fast food". The folk etymology is that the word comes from the Russian word " бы́стро" (bee-stro) ≈ "quickly" from the (brief) Russian occupation after the Napoleonic Wars (e.g., in 1914, a year before the Battle of Waterloo) where the troops wanted something "quickly". There may be a connection but it is not clear.

13. Matthew 6:16-18 The appearance of fast food disappearing

[kjv]

Matthew 6:16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. [kjv]

The ancient Greek word "ὅταν""if, when" (used with subjunctive) as a combination of "ὅτε""when, whereas, sometimes" and "ἄν""possibility, if". The word assumes that the events in the conditional are likely to happen. If the verses in context do not provide the answer, one must find the answer elsewhere.

17. Hypocritical distinctions
Hypocrite
The ancient Greek word "ὑποκριτής""actor, pretender" and comes from "ὑποκρίνομαι""answer, interpret, play a part as an actor".

Since one cannot determine what someone is thinking, one needs to compare what someone is saying with what God says to detect important differences. A deceiver would want to change what the people think that God is saying to avoid such a comparison.

A modern English "hypocrite" says to do something but they actually do something else. This can be measured to see who is greatest.
An ancient Greek "hypocrite" says to do something, and they may in fact do this something, but their thoughts (heart) is not in line with what they say. They are "pretending". In this case, as a deception to have dominion over other human beings.

Find the modern and ancient use of the idea of a hypocrite in the following: Salesperson: I use this product. I am not a hypocrite. Of course, I know it is a piece of junk, but I want to sell that junk to you for your money.

18. Actors and pastors
It can be a mixed blessing to have a pastor with an acting background.

Actors speak of things imaginary as if they were real, while you preachers too often speak of things real as if they were imaginary. Thomas Betterton (English actor and theater manager during Restoration England) (1635-1710)
With a pastor with an acting background, it can be hard at times to separate reality from fiction.

19. Matthew 15:7-8
Matthew 15:7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, [kjv]
υποκριται καλως επροφητευσεν περι υμων ησαιας λεγων [gnt]
15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. [kjv]
ο λαος ουτος τοις χειλεσιν με τιμα η δε καρδια αυτων πορρω απεχει απ εμου [gnt]

The Greek word for "hypocrite" meant "acting" or "pretending". Jesus, through Isaiah, indicates the definition of the "hypocrite" as someone who "pretends" to honor God (with their "lips") but their "heart" does not do this. They can do exactly what they are saying and are then not "hypocrites" in the modern sense. Instead, they are just pretending to honor God.

The ancient Greek word "ὑποκριτής""actor, pretender" and comes from "ὑποκρίνομαι""answer, interpret, play a part as an actor" and comes from two Greek words. To whom might Jesus be referring to as "actors" or "pretenders"?

The English word "fast" comes from the same original word that diverged into several meanings. The English word "breakfast" is the time when one "breaks" the "fast". The "fast" at the "noon" or the ninth hour, or 3 o'clock, was moved to the sixth hour, or what is today "noon" so one would not have to go without food as long.

24. The ninth hour: finished at noon
Matthew 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. [kjv]
απο δε εκτης ωρας σκοτος εγενετο επι πασαν την γην εως ωρας ενατης [gnt]
27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? [kjv]

Clock: 9th hour Clock: 9th o'clock
In the Roman time system, the "ninth" hour is in mid-afternoon in what we would call 3 o'clock.
In the Middle Ages, monks tired of waiting until the Roman ninth hour from sunrise to "noones" or 3:00 P.M. to eat. So the "noones" was moved to midday and that time become known as "noon".

Some play on words may be with the following. The modern Greek word "ύφαλος" (EE-fa-los) ≈ "reef" is from the ancient Greek word "ύφαλος""reef" as in a "rock" near the surface of the water but beneath the water it.

26. Matthew 6:16 Sad and gloomy
Matthew 6:16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. [kjv]

In the GNT (Greek New Testament) the meaning is usually that of "sad". Some possible play on words include the following.

31. Matthew 6:16 Disfigure
Matthew 6:16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. [kjv]
οταν δε νηστευητε μη γινεσθε ως οι υποκριται σκυθρωποι αφανιζουσιν γαρ τα προσωπα αυτων οπως φανωσιν τοις ανθρωποις νηστευοντες αμην λεγω υμιν απεχουσιν τον μισθον αυτων [gnt]

Is there a difference between "disfigure" of "a" face and "hiding" of a "face"? The Greek word translated "disfigure" means, literally, to "not appear". It is not clear why the meaning of this word was obfuscated in this verse and in the two verses three and four verses later, where it is translated as "corrupt".

32. Matthew 6:16 Disfigure
Matthew 6:16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. [kjv]

The modern Greek word "φαίνομαι" (FEH-no-meh) ≈ "to seem, to appear" which is taken directly from the corresponding ancient Greek word.

In the Cambridge Greek Lexicon, the GNT definitions are definitions 9, 11 and 12 in the list. The first definition as that of "conceal" or "disappear" as in "not appearing"

33. Matthew 14:26 Phantom spirit
Matthew 14:26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. [kjv]
οι δε μαθηται ιδοντες αυτον επι της θαλασσης περιπατουντα εταραχθησαν λεγοντες οτι φαντασμα εστιν και απο του φοβου εκραξαν [gnt]
fantasmatimore … [v]

Jesus appears to have been providing an example of "walking" in God's "righteousness" and not man's "righteousness". The word for "troubled" is the same word used to describe Mary before the birth.

The Greek for "spirit" is that of "something that appears", often in a human-like form. At the time they say the "spirit" they did not yet know what it was.

37. Verily I say to you: connect the dots
Matthew 25:12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. [kjv]
ο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν αμην λεγω υμιν ουκ οιδα υμας [gnt]

Amen I say to you and to you I say amen
Jesus uses the phrase "verily" or "amen", "(I) say" "(to) you" (plural) 25 times and (singular) 2 times in Matthew. Since Matthew is writing down what Jesus says, the exact placement of this phrase appears to be important.
This model appears to fit when the "(to) you" is singular and not plural.

50. Enemies and hate
The Greek word translated as "enemy" has a primary meaning of "hate".
Sign: Hate has no home here
Do people who display a sign saying that hate has no home here (or something similar) have any hate towards those they consider hateful?
A hateful movement can be appealing to people who are hateful because it allows them to be hateful while feeling good about it.

This paradox is related to the toleration paradox in that some people consider hate anything that they do not agree with. In that sense, they are as hateful as those that they claim to hate (though they do not want to use that word).

Saying: One person's freedom fighter is another person's terrorist. [Star Wars example]

What effect can "fasting" have on others? The others should not even know that you are "fasting".

Good and not eating Beautifyl and raca Rotten and made in clay Evil and fornication

How well do the play on words work? The good tree would not eat the fruit for themselves. A raca fruit would be a fruit that does not do what the council desires when that conflicts with what Jesus wants.

The step omitted by Jesus is the "grow" part. The "birds" work the growing harvest by "pecking" and taking part of the harvest (first parable), and, in turn, sowing "weeds" (second parable). You are "rather different" (at least you should be). The KJV, influenced by the Latin, says "much better".

The "birds" are used by Jesus as a symbol of "false teachers" who "prey", rather than "pray", on others. The "wolf" or "wolf-dog", as contrasted to a "sheep-dog", and the "snake" or "viper" appear to be used in the same manner.

105. Matthew 6:24 A wealth of logical ideas on mammon
Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye can not serve God and mammon. [kjv]
ουδεις δυναται δυσιν κυριοις δουλευειν η γαρ τον ενα μισησει και τον ετερον αγαπησει η ενος ανθεξεται και του ετερου καταφρονησει ου δυνασθε θεω δουλευειν και μαμωνα [gnt]

Father and mother
Jesus points out, in context, two mutually exclusive choices: God vs. "mammon".
The historical usage of "mammon" in Hebrew is that of a confidence in one's own ability to do things (independent of God). That is a central idea of humanism. The modern Hebrew definition is that of "wealth".
