Matthew 16: 13-19 Prevailing gates
1. Matthew 16: 13-19 Prevailing gates
The ideas here are under development and will be refined and extended, with graphics, to make the ideas more clear.
2. Verses and context
Matthew 16:13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? [kjv]
16:14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. [kjv]
16:15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? [kjv]
16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. [kjv]
16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar–jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. [kjv]
3. Matthew 16:13
KJV: When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
Greek: ελθων δε ο ιησους εις τα μερη καισαρειας καισαριας της φιλιππου ηρωτα τους μαθητας αυτου λεγων τινα με λεγουσιν οι ανθρωποι ειναι τον υιον του ανθρωπου
4. Matthew 16:14
KJV: And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
Greek: οι δε ειπον ειπαν οι μεν ιωαννην τον βαπτιστην αλλοι δε ηλιαν ετεροι δε ιερεμιαν η ενα των προφητων
5. Verses and context
Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [kjv]
… ecclesiam … portae inferi … praevalebunt … [v]
Discuss: Is the "
church" to be built on Peter, the confession of faith, something else, etc.? Explain.
Discuss: Do you want to go though the
"gates" of
"hell"? Explain.
16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. [kjv]
Discuss: Does this verse give the church the authority to do whatever they decide to do?
The context changes with the next verse.
6. Who is Jesus?
A good teacher asks questions to insure that the students have really understood.
Matthew 16:15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? [kjv]
16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. [kjv]
What did Peter say?
You are the Christ.
What did the others say?
Apparently nothing.
What do some pastors say?
You are the eschatological manifestation of the ground of our being, the ontological foundation of the context of our very self-hood revealed.
7. Matthew 6:7-8 Vain repetitions of vain repetitions
In Matthew 6:7, as part of the "
Sermon on the Mount", Jesus says not to pray using "
vain repetitions" as the "
heathen" do.
Matthew 6:7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. [kjv]
προσευχομενοι δε μη βατταλογησητε ωσπερ οι εθνικοι δοκουσιν γαρ οτι εν τη πολυλογια αυτων εισακουσθησονται [gnt]
This is a specific instance of the idea that "
if some is good then more is better". Some pastors (and others) boast that as a child (or even now) they repeat the Lord's Prayer every night.
A few verses later is the "
Lord's Prayer" which, as an example, does not have repetitions within itself, but could be repeated at different times.
Some pastor appear to think that they get "
paid by the word" according to quantity and not quality. At times producing meaningless or even deceptive content, they may lecture their congregations about trying to keep the pastor to any time schedule.
8. Matthew
Matthew 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar–jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. [kjv]
αποκριθεις δε ο ιησους ειπεν αυτω μακαριος ει σιμων βαριωνα οτι σαρξ και αιμα ουκ απεκαλυψεν σοι αλλ ο πατηρ μου ο εν τοις ουρανοις [gnt]
The name "
Simon" is that of "
Peter". The "
Bar-jona" means "
Son of Jonah". The name "
Barabbas" means "
Son of the father" as in "
Abba" as in "
father" or "
daddy". Note that "
Abba" is an Aramaic word that is now a (modern) Hebrew word.
27:16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. [kjv]
ειχον δε τοτε δεσμιον επισημον λεγομενον βαραββαν [gnt]
9. Abba: Son of the Father
The word "
abba" is used in the
GNT (Greek New Testament) in Greek but was not a Hebrew word. It was an Aramaic word. In the garden, before the arrest, trial, and crucifixion, Jesus says the following.
Mark 14:36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt. [kjv]
και ελεγεν αββα ο πατηρ παντα δυνατα σοι παρενεγκε το ποτηριον τουτο απ εμου αλλ ου τι εγω θελω αλλα τι συ [gnt]
… Abba … calicem … [v]
The word "
abba" is the source of the English words
"abbot" and
"Abby".
The Latin term "
pappa" for "
daddy" came to denote the "
Pope" as in the "
Papal" authority, etc.
10. Sons
Sometime before his crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus prophesied the following.
John 5:43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. [kjv]
εγω εληλυθα εν τω ονοματι του πατρος μου και ου λαμβανετε με εαν αλλος ελθη εν τω ονοματι τω ιδιω εκεινον λημψεσθε [gnt]
Who did they receive in his own name?
Matthew 27:16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. [kjv]
ειχον δε τοτε δεσμιον επισημον λεγομενον βαραββαν [gnt]
The name "
Barabbas" means, literally, "
son of the father".
The Hebrew "bar" is "son" as in "Simon Bar Jonah" as "Simon son of Jonah".
The Hebrew "abba" is "father".
11. Matthew 16:17
KJV: And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar–jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
Greek: και αποκριθεις δε ο ιησους ειπεν αυτω μακαριος ει σιμων βαρ ιωνα βαριωνα οτι σαρξ και αιμα ουκ απεκαλυψεν σοι αλλ ο πατηρ μου ο εν τοις ουρανοις
12. Matthew 27:16
KJV: And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
Greek: ειχον δε τοτε δεσμιον επισημον λεγομενον βαραββαν
13. Matthew 16: Calling a masterful gathering of outgoing church believers
Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [kjv]
καγω δε σοι λεγω οτι συ ει πετρος και επι ταυτη τη πετρα οικοδομησω μου την εκκλησιαν και πυλαι αδου ου κατισχυσουσιν αυτης [gnt]
Most people agree that the church should represent the
"gathering of believers" that are
"called (out) together". The word
"church" comes from
"Lord" or
"Master".
12:8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. [kjv]
κυριος γαρ εστιν του σαββατου ο υιος του ανθρωπου [gnt]
"ἐκκλησία" ≈ "assembly, called-out, church" as in a "group of believers".
"κύριος" ≈ "lord or master".
Discuss: Is your "
church" a
"gathering of believers" or an entity that wants to be
"Lord" or
"Master" of those in the "
church"?
14. Leviticus 8:3
Leviticus 8:3 And gather thou all the congregation together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. [kjv]
και πασαν την συναγωγην εκκλησιασον επι την θυραν της σκηνης του μαρτυριου [lxx]
and assemble the whole congregation at the door of the tabernacle of witness. [bs3]
… congregabis … ostium tabernaculi [v]
The Greek word for
"church" was used in the
LXX (Septuagint) for
"assembly" or
"congregation".
A Latin word for door is
"ostium" ≈ "door". The Latin word "
ostarius" for "
doorman" became "
ustaiarius" in common (vulgar) Latin. Then, through the old French "
ussier" we get the Anglo-French "
usser" and then the English word "
usher" , the doorman who "
guards" access to the sheep pen (pews of the sanctuary).
15. Prevailing gates
Matthew 16:13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? [kjv]
There are many books along the lines of "
The gates of hell". The Hebrew equivalent to "
Hades" is "
Sheol".
A traditional or literal interpretation refers to a cave in the area of Caesarea Philippi. There are many sites on earth that lay claim to such a title.
This reasoning follows a commonly used technique that force-fits a literal interpretation into a verse. Urban legends that arise are repeated such that, eventually, it is just accepted.
16. Book
Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [kjv]
One book (ISBN 978-0692266786) is
Jesus said: "I Will Build My Church!": "And the Gates of Hell Shall Not Prevail Against It!" by Rudi Louw (author). Amazon. (as of 2024-04-03).
Many sermons, book, etc., are written based on the modern English meaning of a word, which often originated with the Latin, rather than using the original Greek meaning of the word - which often requires some research.
Here is part of the introduction.
And now Jesus says that “the gates of hell, the gates of hades; the resistance of the enemy to maintain his ground will not prevail against us!” That means that as we share these things with people, the enemy will not prevail in his efforts to keep them ignorant and deceived concerning their true identity revealed in Jesus!
17. Gates
The ancient Greek word
"πύλη" ≈ "wing of gates, door, entrance".
A
"gate" is like a
"door" in that it allows access from one side to the other. Which is the easier or preferred direction depends on context.
In networking:
A "bridge" (or "switch") allows traffic in both directions in a similar manner.
A "router" or "gateway" allows traffic in both directions in a dissimilar manner.
How might the idea of a "
bridge" or "
router" or
"gateway" compare with the
"gates" of
"hell"?

|
Words: πυλαι πυλας πυλη=4 πυλην πυλης=3 πυλωνα=4 πυλωνας=3 πυλωνες=6 πυλωνος=2 πυλωνων πυλωσιν=2
|
The ancient Greek word "πυλών" ≈ "gateway".
The ancient Greek word "πύλη" ≈ "wing of gates, door, entrance".
20. Revelation 21:21 Pearly gates
Revelation 21:21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. [kjv]
και οι δωδεκα πυλωνες δωδεκα μαργαριται ανα εις εκαστος των πυλωνων ην εξ ενος μαργαριτου και η πλατεια της πολεως χρυσιον καθαρον ως υαλος διαυγης [gnt]
A
"gate" is a passage way from one side to the other. Each
"gate" is a
"pearl". One might conclude that a
"pearl" represents a
"gate" or "
access mechanism" to that passage way. It appears that there are
12 pearls but not
12 different pearls.
The ancient Greek word "πυλών" ≈ "gateway".
The ancient Greek word "πύλη" ≈ "wing of gates, entrance".
21. Matthew 16: 13-19 Prevailing gates
The word
"rock" and to what it refers has been and is ambiguous. The following verses on "
keys" have been somewhat ambiguous. How can
"gates" "prevail"? The word "
against" is inferred and/or added. The Greek translated as
"prevail" is that of
"come to full strength". Distinctions can be important:
"prevail" means that a decision has been made.
"come to full strength" means that a precondition has been made but no decision has been made.
Which is the preferred direction in which to go through the
"gates" of
"hell"? The word is "
of" and not "
through" or "
into" or "
out of", etc. What is "
hell"? To what does the final "
it" or "
she" refer? Both
"gate" and
"church" are grammatically feminine.
22. Prevailing gates
… ecclesiam … portae inferi … praevalebunt … [v]
The Latin word
"inferus" ≈ "low, souls of the dead, netherworld, underworld, Hell".
The Latin word
"praevaleo" ≈ "able, superior, prevail".
"prae" ≈ "before".
"valeo" ≈ "able, powerful" and is the source of "value", "valence", etc.
23. Prevailing gates
… ecclesiam … portae inferi … praevalebunt … [v]
In the
GNT and
LXX:
The Latin "praeva-" is used in 133 times in 133 verses.
The Greek «κατισχυ-» is used 85 times in 79 verses.
In only
3 verses are they both in the same verse. Thus, there does not appear to be a lot of overlap in meaning.
What follows ore the other
2 verses.
24. 2 Chronicles 14:11
2 Chronicles 14:11 And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee. [kjv]
και εβοησεν ασα προς κυριον θεον αυτου και ειπεν κυριε ουκ αδυνατει παρα σοι σωζειν εν πολλοις και εν ολιγοις κατισχυσον ημας κυριε ο θεος ημων οτι επι σοι πεποιθαμεν και επι τω ονοματι σου ηλθαμεν επι το πληθος το πολυ τουτο κυριε ο θεος ημων μη κατισχυσατω προς σε ανθρωπος [lxx]
… praevaleat … [v]
25. 2 Chronicles 14:11
KJV: And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.
Latin: et invocavit Dominum Deum et ait Domine non est apud te ulla distantia utrum in paucis auxilieris an in pluribus adiuva nos Domine Deus noster in te enim et in tuo nomine habentes fiduciam venimus contra hanc multitudinem Domine Deus noster tu es non praevaleat contra te homo
26. Daniel 11:12
Daniel 11:12 And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it. [kjv]
και λημψεται τον οχλον και υψωθησεται η καρδια αυτου και καταβαλει μυριαδας και ου κατισχυσει [lxx]
… praevalebit [v]
27. Daniel 11:12
KJV: And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it.
Hebrew: ונשא ההמון ירום לבבו והפיל רבאות ולא יעוז׃
Greek: και λημψεται τον οχλον και υψωθησεται η καρδια αυτου και καταβαλει μυριαδας και ου κατισχυσει
Latin: et capiet multitudinem et exaltabitur cor eius et deiciet multa milia sed non praevalebit
28. Prevailing gates
… ecclesiam … portae inferi … praevalebunt … [v]
Thus, the
"gates" of
"hell" shall not
"come to full strength" to (not "
against"):
☐ "
it" or "
she" as the
"church".
☐ "
it" or "
she" as a
"gate".
Might this mean that the
"gates" of
"hell" are not "
closed" and any "
gait" into the "
wide" or "
open area" will be "
unimpeded" and not "
closed" or "
impeded". Thus, one should be careful
not to "
wander" or "
err". Are there any "
free will" implications in the meaning of this verse?
29. Matthew 7:13-14 Strait talk about narrow and wide gates
Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: [kjv]
εισελθατε δια της στενης πυλης οτι πλατεια και ευρυχωρος η οδος η απαγουσα εις την απωλειαν και πολλοι εισιν οι εισερχομενοι δι αυτης [gnt]
7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. [kjv]
οτι στενη η πυλη και τεθλιμμενη η οδος η απαγουσα εις την ζωην και ολιγοι εισιν οι ευρισκοντες αυτην [gnt]
In Matthew 7, Jesus talks of the straight and wide gates. What exactly is a "
strait" gate? Does the
"gate" part of the
"wide" or
"broad" actually exist? The word is added in some Greek manuscripts.
The ancient Greek word
"πλατύς" ≈ "wide, flat" and is related to the English word
"flat".
30. The key to the keys to an open and shut heavenly gate
Matthew 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. [kjv]
δωσω σοι τας κλειδας της βασιλειας των ουρανων και ο εαν δησης επι της γης εσται δεδεμενον εν τοις ουρανοις και ο εαν λυσης επι της γης εσται λελυμενον εν τοις ουρανοις [gnt]
What is the meaning of this verse? The last part is repeated in Matthew 18 without the
"keys" and appears to connect these discourses.
18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. [kjv]
αμην λεγω υμιν οσα εαν δησητε επι της γης εσται δεδεμενα εν ουρανω και οσα εαν λυσητε επι της γης εσται λελυμενα εν ουρανω [gnt]
The topic here is
"keys". It appears that
"keys" can be taken literally, figuratively, and/or abstractly. Another page deals with binding and loosing on earth and in heaven.
31. Matthew 23:13 Shut and closed
Matthew 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites ! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. [kjv]
ουαι δε υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι κλειετε την βασιλειαν των ουρανων εμπροσθεν των ανθρωπων υμεις γαρ ουκ εισερχεσθε ουδε τους εισερχομενους αφιετε εισελθειν [gnt]
Jesus now starts a sequence of verses that start with the words
"woe" (as in a bird of prey's cry),
"scribes",
"Pharisees" and "
hypocrites". The Greek for "
hypocrite" meant "
acting" or "
pretending".
The "
kingdom of heaven" is something that can be "
closed" to people. That could be "
deception". It could be "
compulsion" with rules and threat of force.
The Greek for "
suffer" is that of "
allow" and the same word often translated as "
forgive". The Greek for "
shut" has the same root as the Greek word for "
key" that is used to "
shut" something.
Have they taken the "
twig" out of the "
eye" of those wanting to do the right thing so they cannot bear "
fruit". The Greek word "
twig" is a play on words with the Greek word for "
fruit".
32. Matthew 23:13
KJV: But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites ! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
Greek: ουαι δε υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι κλειετε την βασιλειαν των ουρανων εμπροσθεν των ανθρωπων υμεις γαρ ουκ εισερχεσθε ουδε τους εισερχομενους αφιετε εισελθειν
33. Shut door panic
The modern German word "die Tür" ≈ "the door".
The Gothic word "daur" ≈ "door".
The German word for "mid-life crisis" is "
Torschlusspanik" which is literally "shut door panic", the fear of getting caught on the wrong side of a closing door (or gate). It can also mean "last-minute panic".
34. Prevailing gates
… ecclesiam … portae inferi … praevalebunt … [v]
The ancient Greek word
"κατισχω" ≈ "come to full strength". The
GNT sometimes uses the idea of
"prevail".
The ancient Greek prefix "κατά" ≈ "down, against".
The ancient Greek word "ἰσχύς" ≈ "strength, power, might".
The idea of the Greek prefix and word is that of
"getting down to strength". The English way of saying this is to
"come up to strength".
35. Strongs - prevail
- *G2729 *3 κατισχύω (kat-is-khoo'-o) : from G2596 and G2480; to overpower:--prevail (against).
- κατισχυσουσιν
- Matthew 16:18 ... the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
- κατισχυσητε
- Luke 21:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy ...
- κατισχυον
- Luke 23:23 ... of them and of the chief priests prevailed.
36. Usage - prevail
*G2729 *3 κατισχύω (kat-is-khoo'-o) : from G2596 and G2480; to overpower:--prevail (against).

Words: κατισχυον κατισχυσητε κατισχυσουσιν
|
The ancient Greek word
"κατισχω" ≈ "come to full strength". The
GNT sometimes uses the idea of
"prevail".
The ancient Greek prefix "κατά" ≈ "down, against".
The ancient Greek word "ἰσχύς" ≈ "strength, power, might".
The idea of the Greek prefix is that of
"getting down to strength". The English way of saying this is to
"come up to strength".
37. Luke 21:35-36 Come to full strength
Luke 21:35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. [kjv]
ως παγις επεισελευσεται γαρ επι παντας τους καθημενους επι προσωπον πασης της γης [gnt]
21:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. [kjv]
αγρυπνειτε δε εν παντι καιρω δεομενοι ινα κατισχυσητε εκφυγειν ταυτα παντα τα μελλοντα γινεσθαι και σταθηναι εμπροσθεν του υιου του ανθρωπου [gnt]
The Greek for "
snare" is more of a physical trap and not a conceptual one as in "
offend". The ancient Greek word
"σκάνδαλον" ≈ "trap, snare" as in entice, tempt, etc.
The next verse is a different context. The
"accounted worthy" is not is some Greek manuscripts. Instead, it is
"come to full strength". Which meaning makes better sense given the context?
38. Luke 21:35
KJV: For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.
Greek: ως παγις επεισελευσεται γαρ επελευσεται επι παντας τους καθημενους επι προσωπον πασης της γης
39. Luke 21:36
KJV: Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
Greek: αγρυπνειτε ουν δε εν παντι καιρω δεομενοι ινα καταξιωθητε κατισχυσητε εκφυγειν ταυτα παντα τα μελλοντα γινεσθαι και σταθηναι εμπροσθεν του υιου του ανθρωπου
40. Luke 23:23-24 Decision
Luke 23:23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. [kjv]
οι δε επεκειντο φωναις μεγαλαις αιτουμενοι αυτον σταυρωθηναι και κατισχυον αι φωναι αυτων [gnt]
23:24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required. [kjv]
Obviously those voiced
"prevailed" in the modern sense of the word. But did those voices
"come to full strength" as in a
"crescendo" in music? Then Pilate made the decision.
It appears that what Pilate did is translated back into the previous verse. This is like a Monday morning quarterback writing what happened in the game knowing what would happen and putting those ideas into the historical narrative.
41. Luke 23:23
KJV: And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.
Greek: οι δε επεκειντο φωναις μεγαλαις αιτουμενοι αυτον σταυρωθηναι και κατισχυον αι φωναι αυτων και των αρχιερεων
42. Luke 23:24
KJV: And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.
Greek: ο δε και πιλατος επεκρινεν γενεσθαι το αιτημα αυτων
43. Exodus 7:13
Exodus 7:13 And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said. [kjv]
και κατισχυσεν η καρδια φαραω και ουκ εισηκουσεν αυτων καθαπερ ελαλησεν αυτοις κυριος [lxx]
and the heart of Pharao was hardened, and he listened not to them, as the Lord charged them. [bs3]
Pharaoh's "
heart" was
"brought up to full strength" such that he did not "
hearken" or "
listen".
44. Exodus 7:13
KJV: And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.
Hebrew: ויחזק לב פרעה ולא שמע אלהם כאשר דבר יהוה׃
Greek: και κατισχυσεν η καρδια φαραω και ουκ εισηκουσεν αυτων καθαπερ ελαλησεν αυτοις κυριος
Brenton: and the heart of Pharao was hardened, and he listened not to them, as the Lord charged them.
45. Job 18:9
Job 18:9 The gin shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him. [kjv]
ελθοισαν δε επ αυτον παγιδες κατισχυσει επ αυτον διψωντας [lxx]
And let snares come upon him: he shall strengthen those that thirst for his destruction. [bs3]
The
"strengthen" is that of
"bringing up to full strength".
The Middle English word
"gin" ≈ "cleverness, scheme, device, machine". The "
cotton gin" was a "
device" or "
machine" is in an "
engine".
The Old English word
"grin" ≈ "snare, gin, noose".
46. Job 18:9
KJV: The gin shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him.
Hebrew: יאחז בעקב פח יחזק עליו צמים׃
Greek: ελθοισαν δε επ αυτον παγιδες κατισχυσει επ αυτον διψωντας
Brenton: And let snares come upon him: he shall strengthen those that thirst for his destruction.
Wycliffe: His foot schal be holdun with a snare; and thirst schal brenne out ayens hym.
47. Psalms 89:21
Psalms 89:21 With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him. [kjv]
η γαρ χειρ μου συναντιλημψεται αυτω και ο βραχιων μου κατισχυσει αυτον [lxx]
48. Psalms 89:21
KJV: With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him.
Hebrew: אשר ידי תכון עמו אף זרועי תאמצנו׃
Greek: η γαρ χειρ μου συναντιλημψεται αυτω και ο βραχιων μου κατισχυσει αυτον
49. Isaiah 50:11
Isaiah 50:11 Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow. [kjv]
ιδου παντες υμεις πυρ καιετε και κατισχυετε φλογα πορευεσθε τω φωτι του πυρος υμων και τη φλογι η εξεκαυσατε δι εμε εγενετο ταυτα υμιν εν λυπη κοιμηθησεσθε [lxx]
Behold, you all kindle a fire, and feed a flame: walk in the light of your fire, and in the flame which you have kindled. This has happened to you for my sake; you° shall lie down in sorrow. [bs3]
To "
kindle" a "
fire" such that it
"compasses" is to bring it
"up to full strength".
It only takes a
spark to get a
fire going,
50. Isaiah 50:11
KJV: Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.
Hebrew: הן כלכם קדחי אש מאזרי זיקות לכו באור אשכם ובזיקות בערתם מידי היתה זאת לכם למעצבה תשכבון׃
Greek: ιδου παντες υμεις πυρ καιετε και κατισχυετε φλογα πορευεσθε τω φωτι του πυρος υμων και τη φλογι η εξεκαυσατε δι εμε εγενετο ταυτα υμιν εν λυπη κοιμηθησεσθε
Brenton: Behold, you° all kindle a fire, and feed a flame: walk in the light of your fire, and in the flame which you° have kindled. This has happened to you for my sake; you° shall lie down in sorrow.
51. Ezekiel 30:24
Ezekiel 30:24 And I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and put my sword in his hand: but I will break Pharaoh's arms, and he shall groan before him with the groanings of a deadly wounded man. [kjv]
και κατισχυσω τους βραχιονας βασιλεως βαβυλωνος και δωσω την ρομφαιαν μου εις την χειρα αυτου και επαξει αυτην επ αιγυπτον και προνομευσει την προνομην αυτης και σκυλευσει τα σκυλα αυτης [lxx]
52. Ezekiel 30:24
KJV: And I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and put my sword in his hand: but I will break Pharaoh's arms, and he shall groan before him with the groanings of a deadly wounded man.
Hebrew: וחזקתי את זרעות מלך בבל ונתתי את חרבי בידו ושברתי את זרעות פרעה ונאק נאקות חלל לפניו׃
Greek: και κατισχυσω τους βραχιονας βασιλεως βαβυλωνος και δωσω την ρομφαιαν μου εις την χειρα αυτου και επαξει αυτην επ αιγυπτον και προνομευσει την προνομην αυτης και σκυλευσει τα σκυλα αυτης
53. Zechariah 10:12
Zechariah 10:12 And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD. [kjv]
και κατισχυσω αυτους εν κυριω θεω αυτων και εν τω ονοματι αυτου κατακαυχησονται λεγει κυριος [lxx]
54. Zechariah 10:12
KJV: And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD.
Hebrew: וגברתים ביהוה ובשמו יתהלכו נאם יהוה׃
Greek: και κατισχυσω αυτους εν κυριω θεω αυτων και εν τω ονοματι αυτου κατακαυχησονται λεγει κυριος
55. Verses
… ecclesiam … portae inferi … praevalebunt … [v]
Discuss: Do you want to go though the
"gates" of
"hell"? Explain.
56. Amos 9:2 Digging into Hades
57. Longing and heaviness
Philippians 2:26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick. [kjv]
επειδη επιποθων ην παντας υμας ιδειν και αδημονων διοτι ηκουσατε οτι ησθενησεν [gnt]
Paul's "
southern" roots come through as he says "
you all". Who is "
you"? Who is the "
he"? Can we substitute one of the leadership for "
he" and have the thought still be meaningful? The "
full of" is inferred.
Why did Epaphroditus "
long for" and be
"full of heaviness" for those at Philippi? Might it be because he missed the leadership and atmosphere at Philippi? The Greek for "
sick" has the more general meaning of being "
weak". How can someone else hearing about you make you "
heavy"?
The Greek word for
"full of heaviness" describes Jesus in Matthew and Mark.
58. Sorrowful and amazed
In Matthew and Mark, in the Garden after the Last Supper, while Jesus prays, the same Greek word is used in the sense of Jesus becoming
"heavy".
In Matthew, Jesus is "
sorrowful" and "
heavy".
Matthew 26:37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. [kjv]
και παραλαβων τον πετρον και τους δυο υιους ζεβεδαιου ηρξατο λυπεισθαι και αδημονειν [gnt]
Was Jesus "
sorrowful"? The Greek word means "
annoyed" or, in context, "
distressed".
In Mark, Jesus is "
sore amazed" and
"heavy".
Mark 14:33 And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy; [kjv]
και παραλαμβανει τον πετρον και τον τον ιακωβον και τον ιωαννην αυτου και ηρξατο εκθαμβεισθαι και αδημονειν [gnt]
59. Philippians 2:26 Heaviness
The ancient Greek word
"αδημονία" ≈ "anxiety, distress". The modern Greek word
"αδημονία" (a-thee-mo-NEE-a) ≈ "impatience, anxiety".
How would you create a sermon around this verse? Who is "
he"? Who is "
you"? Who's on first?
Paul appears to be making many subliminal comments using play-on-words, puns, references to other scripture, etc.
60. Philippians 2:26 Remain in hell
Let us add the letter "
s", as Greek sigma «
σ», into the word for "
anxiety" or "
distress" and translated in the
KJV (King James Version) as
"full of heaviness".
"ᾍδης" ≈ "Hades" as a word for "hell".
"μονή" ≈ "remain, stay" as in a "residence" or "mansion".
«αδημονων» as "full of heaviness" (a-thee-mo-non).
«αδης μονων» as "remain in hell" (a-thees-mo-non)
61. Ecclesiastes 8:1
Ecclesiastes 8:1 Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed. [kjv]
τις οιδεν σοφους και τις οιδεν λυσιν ρηματος σοφια ανθρωπου φωτιει προσωπον αυτου και αναιδης προσωπω αυτου μισηθησεται [lxx]
Who knows the wise? and who knows the interpretation of a saying? A man's wisdom will lighten his countenance; but a man of shameless countenance will be hated. [bs3]
The ancient Greek word
"ἀναιδής" ≈ "shameless, ruthless".
"ἀν" ≈ "not" (as a prefix).
"αἰδώς" ≈ "shame, respect, reverence".
The modern Greek word
"αναιδής" (a-neh-THEES) ≈ "impudent, brash, shameless" .
This word could be used as a play on words with "
Hades" but does not appear to have been used as such in the
LXX.
62. Ecclesiastes 8:1
KJV: Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
Hebrew: מי כהחכם ומי יודע פשר דבר חכמת אדם תאיר פניו ועז פניו ישנא׃
Greek: τις οιδεν σοφους και τις οιδεν λυσιν ρηματος σοφια ανθρωπου φωτιει προσωπον αυτου και αναιδης προσωπω αυτου μισηθησεται
Brenton: Who knows the wise? and who knows the interpretation of a saying? A man's wisdom will lighten his countenance; but a man of shameless countenance will be hated.
63. Daniel 2:15
Daniel 2:15 He answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel. [kjv]
αρχων του βασιλεως περι τινος εξηλθεν η γνωμη η αναιδης εκ προσωπου του βασιλεως εγνωρισεν δε το ρημα αριωχ τω δανιηλ [lxx]
Chief magistrate of the king, therefore has the preemptory command proceeded from the king? So Arioch made known the matter to Daniel. [bs3]
64. Daniel 2:15
KJV: He answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.
Hebrew: ענה ואמר לאריוך שליטא די מלכא על מה דתא מהחצפה מן קדם מלכא אדין מלתא הודע אריוך לדניאל׃
Greek: αρχων του βασιλεως περι τινος εξηλθεν η γνωμη η αναιδης εκ προσωπου του βασιλεως εγνωρισεν δε το ρημα αριωχ τω δανιηλ
Brenton: Chief magistrate of the king, therefore has the preemptory command proceeded from the king? So Arioch made known the matter to Daniel.
65. Daniel 8:23
Daniel 8:23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. [kjv]
και επ εσχατων της βασιλειας αυτων πληρουμενων των αμαρτιων αυτων αναστησεται βασιλευς αναιδης προσωπω και συνιων προβληματα [lxx]
And at the latter time of their kingdom, when their sins are coming to the full, there shall arise a king bold in countenance, and understanding riddles. [bs3]
66. Daniel 8:23
KJV: And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.
Hebrew: ובאחרית מלכותם כהתם הפשעים יעמד מלך עז פנים ומבין חידות׃
Greek: και επ εσχατων της βασιλειας αυτων πληρουμενων των αμαρτιων αυτων αναστησεται βασιλευς αναιδης προσωπω και συνιων προβληματα
Brenton: And at the latter time of their kingdom, when their sins are coming to the full, there shall arise a king bold in countenance, and understanding riddles.
67. Proverbs 30:16
Proverbs 30:16 The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough. [kjv]
αδης και ερως γυναικος και ταρταρος και γη ουκ εμπιπλαμενη υδατος και υδωρ και πυρ ου μη ειπωσιν αρκει [lxx]
Note that the
LXX has differences.
The "grave" is called «αδης» or "hades", named for the Greek god of the underworld. The word "hades" means "unseen".
In addition to the "earth", the sub-underground world of the dead, «ταρταρυς» is added. The word «ταρταρυς» is also used by Peter in 2 Peter.
In addition to "fire", "water" is also used (a second time).
68. Proverbs 30:16
KJV: The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.
Hebrew: שאול ועצר רחם ארץ לא שבעה מים ואש לא אמרה הון׃
Greek: αδης και ερως γυναικος και ταρταρος και γη ουκ εμπιπλαμενη υδατος και υδωρ και πυρ ου μη ειπωσιν αρκει
69. Revelation 20:14
Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. [kjv]
και ο θανατος και ο αδης εβληθησαν εις την λιμνην του πυρος ουτος ο θανατος ο δευτερος εστιν η λιμνη του πυρος [gnt]
It gets pretty hot in Texas.
If I owned Texas and Hell, I would rent out Texas and live in Hell. Union General Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888).
70. Revelation 20:14
KJV: And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Greek: και ο θανατος και ο αδης εβληθησαν εις την λιμνην του πυρος ουτος εστιν ο θανατος ο δευτερος θανατος εστιν η λιμνη του πυρος
71. Proverbs 27:20
Proverbs 27:20 Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied. [kjv]
αδης και απωλεια ουκ εμπιμπλανται ωσαυτως και οι οφθαλμοι των ανθρωπων απληστοι βδελυγμα κυριω στηριζων οφθαλμον και οι απαιδευτοι ακρατεις γλωσση [lxx]
The Greek for
"destruction" is that of those "
many" in the "
wide area" who do not find the "
narrow" "
gate" for the "
few".
72. Proverbs 27:20
KJV: Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.
Hebrew: שאול ואבדה לא תשבענה ועיני האדם לא תשבענה׃
Greek: αδης και απωλεια ουκ εμπιμπλανται ωσαυτως και οι οφθαλμοι των ανθρωπων απληστοι βδελυγμα κυριω στηριζων οφθαλμον και οι απαιδευτοι ακρατεις γλωσση
73. Verses
… ecclesiam … portae inferi … praevalebunt … [v]
Discuss: Do you want to go though the
"gates" of
"hell"? Explain.
There are two ways through the
"gates". Which side are you on?
74. Didache: The doctrine of teaching
English: There are two ways, one of life and one of death, and there is a great difference between these two ways. (Holmes, p. 344)
English: Now this is the way of life: First, you shall love God, who made you. Second, you shall love your neighbor as yourself; but whatever you do not wish to happen to you, do not do to another. (Holmes, p. 344)
Didache [1.2]
The two ways appear to be "
God's way" and "
man's way" which can be called
humanism.
The "
Didache" is a special Greek manuscript knowns as "
The teaching of the twelve apostles". It is a short and early (first century A.D.) manuscript.
The Didache was considered by some early church fathers as scripture but eventually was considered (by most) as highly authoritative but not at the level of scripture.
The very first line of the Didache states that there are two ways, one of life, one of death, and there is a great difference between the two ways. This is a nice top-down backward-chaining way of starting the text. Barnabas makes a similar statement.
75. Barnabas: Two ways
English: … There are two ways of teaching and power, one of light and one of darkness, and there is a great difference between these two ways. (Holmes, p. 433)
Greek: Ὁδοὶ δύο εἰσὶν διδαχῆς καὶ ἐξουσίας, ἥ τε τοῦ φωτὸς καὶ ἡ τοῦ σκότους. διαφορὰ δὲ πολλὴ τῶν δύο ὁδῶν Epistle of Barnabas [18.1]

This same idea is stated in the opening lines of the Didache.

76. Gates and plazas
77. Caught up
1 Thessalonians 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. [kjv]
επειτα ημεις οι ζωντες οι περιλειπομενοι αμα συν αυτοις αρπαγησομεθα εν νεφελαις εις απαντησιν του κυριου εις αερα και ουτως παντοτε συν κυριω εσομεθα [gnt]
… rapiemur … [v]
The words of interest here are
"caught up" as in
"rapture". The
"caught up" appears to be related to Acts 1:11.
Acts 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. [kjv]
Part of this is related to the interesting phrase "
thy kingdom come" in the Lord's Prayer.

Details are left as a future topic.

78. Rapture and toilet paper
One idea many people have about the rapture, much of it from the Left Behind series of books, is that all believers will disappear.
This is similar to the shelves of toilet paper disappearing as a result of panic buying. This leads to the phrase, "
When the roll is called up yonder" from the hymn of the same name.
79. Commutativity
An mathematical (or structures) operation is
commutative if the order of evaluation does not matter.
Commutative:
2+3 = 3+2 so addition is commutative.
2*3 = 3*2 so multiplication is commutative.
Not commutative:
2-3 != 3-2 so subtraction is not commutative.
2/3 != 3/2 so division is not commutative.
Note: The
HOV (High Occupancy Lane) is not commutative (it is usually one way) but it can be used to commute.
80. Comforter
And there appears to be a connection or association of Jesus of comforter with the rapture from John 16:7.
John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. [kjv]
αλλ εγω την αληθειαν λεγω υμιν συμφερει υμιν ινα εγω απελθω εαν γαρ μη απελθω ο παρακλητος ου μη ελθη προς υμας εαν δε πορευθω πεμψω αυτον προς υμας [gnt]
That is, if Jesus needs to leave for the comforter to come, and that condition is
commutative, then Jesus cannot come back until the comforter leaves. If the comforter cannot be taken away, then the resolution of that paradox is that those with the comforter must also be taken away before Jesus comes back.
81. John 16:7
KJV: Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
Witoðlice gyf ic fare. ich hine sende to eow.
Wycliffe: But Y seie to you treuthe, it spedith to you, that Y go; for if Y go not forth, the coumfortour schal not come to you; but if Y go forth, Y schal sende hym to you.
Gothic: akei ik sunja izwis qitha: batizo ist izwis ei ik galeithau; unte jabai ik ni galeitha, parakletus ni qimith at izwis; aththan jabai gagga, sandja ina du izwis.
Luther: Aber ich sage euch die Wahrheit: Es ist euch gut, daß ich hingehe. Denn so ich nicht hingehe, so kommt der Tröster nicht zu euch; so ich aber gehe, will ich ihn zu euch senden.
Spanish: Mas yo os digo la verdad: Os es necesario que yo me vaya; porque si no me fuera, el Consolador no vendría a vosotros; mas si me fuere, os le enviaré.
82. Comforter
This connection does not imply nor require that this property is true for all time before and after this period of time (e.g., at the transfiguration).
83. The Holy Ghost as comforter
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. [kjv]
ο δε παρακλητος το πνευμα το αγιον ο πεμψει ο πατηρ εν τω ονοματι μου εκεινος υμας διδαξει παντα και υπομνησει υμας παντα α ειπον υμιν εγω [gnt]
paracletus … Spiritus Sanctus … [v]
The ancient Greek word
"παράκλητος" ≈ "advocate" as in the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost. The ancient Greek word
"πνεῦμα" ≈ "air, wind, breath, life, spirit, soul" where the exact meaning depends on context. The Latin word
"spiritus" ≈ "spirit".
The "
all"
"things" is that of "
everything that you need to know" (as you need it).
In
PIE languages, the words "
ghost" and "
guest" are cognate. A "
ghost" or "
guest" can be either friendly or not friendly, as in (cartoon character) Casper the friendly ghost.
84. Matthew 12:26-29 Snatching the raptured goods from the strong man
Matthew 12:29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. [kjv]
η πως δυναται τις εισελθειν εις την οικιαν του ισχυρου και τα σκευη αυτου σαι αρπασαι εαν μη πρωτον δηση τον ισχυρον και τοτε την οικιαν αυτου διαρπασει [gnt]
The
GNT word for
"spoil" is the ancient Greek word
"ἁρπάζω" ≈ "snatch away, carry off" and may be related to the ancient Greek word
"ἅρπη" ≈ "bird of prey" as a hawk or falcon and which
may be related to the
PIE root for "
reap", "
harvest", "
sickle". This word for
"snatch" is sometimes translated
"rapture" or
"ravenous" as in "
wolves".
The ancient Greek word
"σκευή" ≈ "vessel" as something that is made but can refer to
"people" as in a
"chosen vessel".
[Last Supper, 1 & 2 Thessalonians]
85. Raptures
Do you see the connections in the following?
Moses, as Jesus, raptured the people from the strong man of the world, the Egyptian Pharaoh, to take them to the promised land of milk and honey in the Exodus or way out.
Jesus, will rapture his chosen vessels (people) from the strong man of the world, Satan, to take them to the promised land in paradise. Early Christians were called the way.
86. The security of flaming swords
Genesis 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. [kjv]
και εξεβαλεν τον αδαμ και κατωκισεν αυτον απεναντι του παραδεισου της τρυφης και εταξεν τα χερουβιμ και την φλογινην ρομφαιαν την στρεφομενην φυλασσειν την οδον του ξυλου της ζωης [lxx]
A key or password provides
passive security to protect a resource.
Active security requires a physical presence of someone or something guarding the resource. Is the security of the "
flaming sword" in Genesis 3:24 "
active", "
passive", both or none of these? Is that "
flaming sword" needed to keep access open, to keep access closed, both of these, none of these, or something else?
87. Matthew 11:12-14 Exploring the Kingdom of Heaven
Matthew 11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. [kjv]
It is not clear if what Daniel describes as the
"kingdom" of
"heaven" is related to what Jesus says.
88. Model of the kingdoms and births
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he can not see the kingdom of God. [kjv]
απεκριθη ιησους και ειπεν αυτω αμην αμην λεγω σοι εαν μη τις γεννηθη ανωθεν ου δυναται ιδειν την βασιλειαν του θεου [gnt]
1 Kingdoms 1
2 Kingdoms 2
3 Kingdoms 3
4 Kingdoms 4
5 Kingdoms 5
Four parts: "
earth", "
air", "
fire", "
water".
The "
ask", "
seek", "
knock" sequence is part of the "
flame" and "
sword" progression.
89. Details
Put the Kingdom of God outside of space and time and (since the fall) includes the "tree of life". The creation is inside space and time.
The "flaming sword" both protects and keeps the way open.
The "Kingdom of Earth" is for those "of the world".
The "Kingdom of Heaven" is for those "in the world".
The "flaming sword" is provided by Jesus who "throws" the "sword". The Holy Spirit provides the "flame".
Birth#3 is the regeneration or in-processing into the Kingdom of God.
90. Flaming swords
The (hidden) flaming sword was left to keep open the way to paradise and life.
The assembly of believers is to be built on the rock of Jesus and not on the sand of man. The gates (there may be one for each person) of Hades (what is not seen) are not at full strength, providing a narrow or strait opening, for which to make one's way along the narrow path and gate, kept open by the (unseen) flaming sword.
How many
"gates" are there?
91. Rock and sand
Build your house on the granite
rock of Jesus and not on the human sand (or stones) of man, Matthew 7:24-27. Sand is a chip off the old block of granite and made in the image of granite.
Church of believers built on the rock of Christ .
Church of believers built on the sand of man .
The higher one goes up the human
sand hierarchy or
sand tree, the more the temptation to ignore the foundation of the
rock and to start to "
influence" or "
manipulate" others as "
leaders" for one's own purposes.
To the extent that the Church of believers built on the sand of man helps one do what Jesus wants them to do, it is good. To the extent it does not, it is not good.
Some
birds will make "
stones" (sand on which to build their birdhouse) appear as "
bread". That is, give "
bad" "
gifts" or "
houses" to their "
children".
92. Church and reality
The Church, when built on a sand human hierarchy, is the
master and has the
keys to the kingdom of heaven or kingdom of the air or kingdom of the birds. They can bind and loose in the reality of earth and air as now exists.
The purpose of keys is that of closing something. Why are there multiple keys? Is there a key for each person? Is there a gate for each person? The word key comes from the idea of closing something.
The reality of where we exist appears to be Hades with the unseen flaming sword. For the assembly of believers, the gate to life has been kept open, but just narrowly. At a point in time, Jesus will close that gate and reality as we know it will disappear. A new reality will be created. Only those who made it through the narrow gate will see that reality.
93. 2 Peter 3:9 Make way for repentance
Peter tells us that the Lord is not
"slow" but will delay coming to give all a chance to
"make way" to
"repent" as in an
"after thought". When it happens, it will happen "
quickly".
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. [kjv]
ου βραδυνει κυριος της επαγγελιας ως τινες βραδυτητα ηγουνται αλλα μακροθυμει εις υμας μη βουλομενος τινας απολεσθαι αλλα παντας εις μετανοιαν χωρησαι [gnt]
The ancient Greek word
"βραδύνω" ≈ "make slow, delay" which comes from
"βραδύς" ≈ "slow" and which is the opposite of
"ταχύς" ≈ "quick" which, depending on context, might mean "
soon".
The ancient Greek word
"χωρέω" ≈ "give way, make way". Those described should
"give way" or
"make way" for
"repentance". The Greek word for
"repentance" means, literally, to
"think after" what one is doing.
"Repentance" starts in the mind. There is another Greek word for "
change what you are doing".
94. 2 Peter 3:8-10
2 Peter 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. [kjv]
3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. [kjv]
3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. [kjv]
95. 2 Peter 3:8
KJV: But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
Greek: εν δε τουτο μη λανθανετω υμας αγαπητοι οτι μια ημερα παρα κυριω ως χιλια ετη και χιλια ετη ως ημερα μια
96. 2 Peter 3:9
KJV: The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Greek: ου βραδυνει ο κυριος της επαγγελιας ως τινες βραδυτητα ηγουνται αλλα μακροθυμει εις ημας υμας μη βουλομενος τινας απολεσθαι αλλα παντας εις μετανοιαν χωρησαι
97. 2 Peter 3:10
KJV: But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
Greek: ηξει δε η ημερα κυριου ως κλεπτης εν νυκτι εν η οι ουρανοι ροιζηδον παρελευσονται στοιχεια δε καυσουμενα λυθησονται λυθησεται και γη και τα εν αυτη εργα κατακαησεται ευρεθησεται
98. Observations
… ecclesiam … portae inferi … praevalebunt … [v]
One hears of some people saying that others will "
go to hell". That is, go through the "
gates of hell" to get to "
hell".
From the above verses and reasoning, it appears that we will all end up in "
hell", so to speak, if we do not get through the narrow "
gate of hell" to "
life". That "
gate" is not yet at "
full strength". It appears that the "
rapture" is the way Jesus has of getting the remaining believers through that "
gate" before it reaches "
full strength" and "
closes".
99. Throwing pearls build
1 Gates
2 Gates with ask
3 Gates with sheep-dog
4 Gates with wolf-dog
5 Gates with thrown pearls
6 Gates with swine
This chart build is to summarize Matthew 7.
The end result of giving what is "
holy", control of the group, to a wolf-dog and having white and then gray "
pearls" cast to "
swine" to be trodden down to become black pearls is to divide the group into "
few" and "
some". Only the "
few" who have otherwise ignored the "
wolf" will find and knock on the gate to life and have it opened.
100. 1 Corinthians 15:55 Sting of death
1 Corinthians 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? [kjv]
που σου θανατε το νικος που σου θανατε το κεντρον [gnt]
The sting of the scorpion might be compared to the "
sting of death" referred to by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:55-56.
When stung by a scorpion, the pain does not happen immediately but is somewhat delayed. Thus the element of delayed surprise. This may be intended in places where there is an after-the-fact wailing and gnashing of teeth.
