Matthew 12:46-50 Mother and brethren outside
1. Matthew 12:46-50 Mother and brethren outside
This content is being developed.
2. Matthew 12:41-42 Nineveh and the queen of the south
Matthew 12:41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. [kjv]
12:42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. [kjv]
These verses connect the three days and three night verses right before and the unclean spirit and seven other spirits right after.
3. Matthew 12:43-45 One unclean spirit and seven others
Following the request for a sign and Jonah, the belly of the whale, and the three days and three nights, Jesus makes the following statements.
Matthew 12:43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. [kjv]
12:44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. [kjv]
12:45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. [kjv]
There are many play on words in these verses that connect what was said here to the seven/eight Kingdom Parables which start some six verses later.
4. Matthew 12:46-50 Mother and brethren outside
Matthew 12:46 While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. [kjv]
12:47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. [kjv]
12:48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? [kjv]
12:49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren ! [kjv]
12:50 For who soever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. [kjv]
These verses connect the "
three" "
days" and "
three" "
nights" and the unclean "
spirit" with the seven/eight Kingdom Parables in Matthew 13.
5. Matthew 12:46-48
[kjv]
The words "
brother", "
sister" and "
mother" are used by the people in the usual human sense. Jesus appears to have a different or alternate definition.
If "Allen" is a "brother" of "Jesus" (fellow believer brother)
and "Bob" is a "brother" of "Allen" (physical brother)
then is "Bob" a "brother" of "Jesus"?
The
equivocation here is based on sliding the definition of "
brother".
Discuss: Is it an
equivocation to claim that one is
male because one has made oneself appear to be
male? As Aristotle says, one must clearly define what words mean to both
detect an
equivocation and
destroy a logical
argument.
6. Brothers
On the other hand: If "
A" is a "
brother" of Jesus, then is Jesus a "
brother" of "
A"? This is a
commutative property.
Matthew 12:50 For who soever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. [kjv]
Suppose the "
brother" is
Jesus. Could being
"angry" with
Jesus make one
"liable" "with respect to" the "
judgment"?
5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. [kjv]
7. Non-commutative property
Matthew 12:50 For who soever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. [kjv]
If "
A" is a "
brother" of Jesus, then is Jesus a "
brother" of "
A"? This is a
commutative property. There is an important
non-commutative aspect.
Story: There were four brothers and one sister (the youngest). The youngest brother made a claim later in life.
If any of the brothers yelled at the sister, that brother got in trouble.
If the sister yelled at any of the brothers, that brother got in trouble.
Do you see the
non-commutative aspect of this story?
If you are "angry" at "the" "brother" Jesus, then you get in trouble.
If "the" "brother" Jesus is "angry" at you (or what you did), then you get in trouble.
8. Matthew 12:47-50 Family members
Matthew 12:47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.
[kjv]
These verses can be added for the effect of minimizing the family in the culture of today and emphasizing the community or organization. These ideas are the foundational part of Karl Marx, and humanistic (against God) movements such as Communism, socialism, etc.
Note that these verses as spoken by Jesus will be used to tie together two verses that do not, without study, appear to be directly related.
9. Matthew 12:46
KJV: While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him.
10. Matthew 12:47
KJV: Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.
11. Matthew 12:48
KJV: But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?
12. Disciples
Matthew 12:49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren ! [kjv]
Jesus points towards the "disciples".
The "disciples" are all "men".
The actual mother of Jesus is outside.
The "brethren" of Jesus are his "disciples".
Who is his "mother"?
13. Mother knows the disciples best
Matthew 12:49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren ! [kjv]
Assuming that Judas who will betray him is, symbolically, his "
mother". These two groups can now be associated with the previous example.
Verse |
play on words |
present |
called |
Men of Nineveh |
disciples eating |
disciples |
brethren |
Queen of South |
king/queen Satan |
traitor |
mother |
Do you see the possible connections?
Are the "disciples" as "men" "eating" in the "righteousness" of "God"?
Is the "mother" as "mommy" interested in "mammon" and, perhaps, using "empty opinion"? All of these terms are play on words with the word "mammon" which also includes "earth" as "sand" (human infrastructure).
Jesus will clarify and include "
women" as "
sisters" in his next words.
14. Matthew 12:49-50 Relations
Matthew 12:49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren ! [kjv]
12:50 For who soever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. [kjv]
Jesus provides a definition of what it means to be a "
brother", "
sister" or "
mother" of Jesus. Assume the following using the definitions of Jesus.
"Andrew" or "A" is a "brother" of Jesus or "C".
"Bob" or "B" is a "brother" of Jesus or "C".
Can it be assumed that the
human definitions of "
brother" applies to what Jesus says? That is:
If "A" and "B" are each a "brother" of Jesus,
then are "A" and "B" "brothers" of each other using the definition provided by Jesus?
15. Matthew 12:49-50 Brothers in Christ
Matthew 12:49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren ! [kjv]
12:50 For who soever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. [kjv]
Do "
brothers" in
Christ need to be directly related? Is everyone related through Adam and Eve? That is,
not Adam and Steve.
Discuss: Does anyone in the
GNT (Greek New Testament), or thereafter, ever call Jesus a "
brother"? Is Jesus a "
brother"? Explain.
Discuss: Does Jesus ever refer to himself a "
brother" of someone else? How about in this (and the next) verse?
If Jesus calls you a friend if you do the will of the Father, and you do the will of the Father, is Jesus a friend of you? That is, is it commutative.
[kjv]
This aspect of separate relations between Jesus and each "
brother" or "
sister" will come out in a few verses after the "
angry" verses in terms of Jesus being the "
head" and the believers or "
brothers" or "
sisters" being each a "
hair" of the "
head".
There is a denomination named "
Brothers in Christ".
Each "
hair" can be "
black" (not clear or indistinct) or "
white" (clear or distinct).
17. Matthew 12:49-50 Father
18. Matthew 12:49
KJV: And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren !
19. Matthew 12:50 Brethren
Matthew 12:50 For who soever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. [kjv]
The Greek uses "
brothers" as "
brethren" as in the male gender. Does this usage exclude "
sisters" or the female gender?
The Latin word
"frater" ≈ "brother" as in the English word "
fraternity".
The Latin word
"soror" ≈ "sister" as in the English word "
sorority".
20. Brethren
Matthew 12:50 For who soever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. [kjv]
It is not hard to reason that the term "
brother" as in "
brethren" implies all genders that do the "
will of my Father".
Getting back to the parable of the sheep and goats, the following is observed.
The sheep did these things to his "brethren" (and perhaps to those not his "brethren").
The goats did not do these things to anyone, including his "brethren".
Any solution to the dilemmas of this parable should take into account this distinction.
Discussion question: Is anyone of the human race his "
brethren"? That is, there are no other qualifications.
21. Matthew 12:50
KJV: For who soever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
22. Matthew 13 Kingdom parables
23. Matthew 12:50
Matthew 12:50 For who soever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. [kjv]
This is the end of chapter 12. The next chapter starts the Kingdom Parables.
