3. James 5:14
KJV: Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
Greek: ασθενει τις εν υμιν προσκαλεσασθω τους πρεσβυτερους της εκκλησιας και προσευξασθωσαν επ αυτον αλειψαντες αυτον ελαιω εν τω ονοματι του κυριου
4. James 4:4
KJV: Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
Greek: μοιχοι και μοιχαλιδες μοιχαλιδες ουκ οιδατε οτι η φιλια του κοσμου εχθρα του θεου εστιν ος αν εαν ουν βουληθη φιλος ειναι του κοσμου εχθρος του θεου καθισταται
5. James 4:6
James 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. [kjv]
μειζονα δε διδωσιν χαριν διο λεγει ο θεος υπερηφανοις αντιτασσεται ταπεινοις δε διδωσιν χαριν [gnt]
maiorem … gratiam … humilibus … gratiam [v]
The ancient Greek word
"χάριν" ≈ "favor, purpose, joy" and is, through Latin influence, often translated as "
grace". The ancient Greek word
"μείζων" ≈ "greater, larger" in a comparative sense. God offers "
grace". What is
"more" (in a bigger sense) than the "
grace" God offers?
Does "God" resist the "proud"?
Do the "proud" resist "God"?
This appears to be a (not uncommon)
converse logical error by James.
The proud resist God does not mean that God resists the proud.

7. Usage - greater
The ancient Greek word
"μείζων" ≈ "greater, larger" in a comparative sense.
*G3173 *242 μέγας (meg'-as) : (including the prolonged forms, feminine megale, plural megaloi, etc.; compare also 3176, 3187); big (literally or figuratively, in a very wide application):--(+ fear) exceedingly, great(-est), high, large, loud, mighty, + (be) sore (afraid), strong, X to years.
8. James 4:6
KJV: But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
Greek: μειζονα δε διδωσιν χαριν διο λεγει ο θεος υπερηφανοις αντιτασσεται ταπεινοις δε διδωσιν χαριν
Latin: maiorem autem dat gratiam propter quod dicit Deus superbis resistit humilibus autem dat gratiam
9. James 4:7
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. [kjv]
υποταγητε ουν τω θεω αντιστητε δε τω διαβολω και φευξεται αφ υμων [gnt]
The ancient Greek word
"φεύγω" ≈ "flee, avoid, get away from".
The ancient Greek word
"ἀνθίστημι" ≈ "stand against, oppose".
Will the devil
"flee" from us if we "
resist" him? It might make more sense that the devil would
"flee" or
"avoid" or
"get away from" those who give in to him and concentrate efforts on those who
"resist" him. Discuss:
How much time does a salesperson spend with you once the sale has been completed?
Did Job "resist"? Did Satan "flee"?
Did Jesus "resist" during the "temptations" of the devil? Did Satan "flee"? Did Satan return to try again?
Can you "resist" or "fight" Satan or the devil on your own? Consider Peter.
10. James and Matthew
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. [kjv]
υποταγητε ουν τω θεω αντιστητε δε τω διαβολω και φευξεται αφ υμων [gnt]
What does Jesus say?
Matthew 5:39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. [kjv]
εγω δε λεγω υμιν μη αντιστηναι τω πονηρω αλλ οστις σε ραπιζει εις την δεξιαν σιαγονα σου στρεψον αυτω και την αλλην [gnt]
One is not to give in to "
evil". One is to go one's way, do what Jesus wants, and take any worldly consequences that result.
11. Matthew 5:39
KJV: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Greek: εγω δε λεγω υμιν μη αντιστηναι τω πονηρω αλλ οστις σε ραπισει επι ραπιζει εις την δεξιαν σου σιαγονα σου στρεψον αυτω και την αλλην
12. Isaiah 50:8
Isaiah 50:8 He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me. [kjv]
οτι εγγιζει ο δικαιωσας με τις ο κρινομενος μοι αντιστητω μοι αμα και τις ο κρινομενος μοι εγγισατω μοι [lxx]
for he that has justified me draws near; who is he that pleads with me? let him stand up against me at the same time: yes, who is he that pleads with me? let him draw near to me. [bs3]

16. Peace
A precise definition of
peace is important.
The aggressor is always peace-loving (as Bonaparte always claimed to be); he would prefer to take over our country unopposed. Carl von Clausewitz (Prussian military theorist)

20. James 4:8 Nearness
James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. [kjv]
εγγισατε τω θεω και εγγισει υμιν καθαρισατε χειρας αμαρτωλοι και αγνισατε καρδιας διψυχοι [gnt]
Is the burden on God to "
draw near" to us or for us to "
draw near" to Him?
Does it create a logical issue to have both "
draw" towards each other as James states?
Saying:
If you feel far from God, guess who moved?
Discuss: Can one move away from God?
21. James 4:8 Double-minded
The word translated "
double-minded" is used twice in James and is not a common word.
What might "double-minded" mean?
Does "double-minded" always mean that the "heart" needs purified?
Can someone look at the same thing in more than one way? Does that make them "
double-minded"?

KJV: Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
Greek: ταπεινωθητε ενωπιον του κυριου και υψωσει υμας
29. James 4:11
James 4:11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. [kjv]
μη καταλαλειτε αλληλων αδελφοι ο καταλαλων αδελφου η κρινων τον αδελφον αυτου καταλαλει νομου και κρινει νομον ει δε νομον κρινεις ουκ ει ποιητης νομου αλλα κριτης [gnt]
Jesus did not speak well of the parts of the law that had been added by the religious establishment.
What part of the law was given by God?
What part of the law was added by man?
The Greek word "
judge" means to "
divide" or "
separate". How did Jesus "
judge" or "
divide" or "
separate" between God's law and mans added parts to the law?
Discuss: When Jesus healed on the Sabbath, he was in violation of the law. Why did Jesus do this in violation of the law?
30. James 4:11
KJV: Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

31. James 4:12
James 4:12 There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another? [kjv]
εις εστιν νομοθετης και κριτης ο δυναμενος σωσαι και απολεσαι συ δε τις ει ο κρινων τον πλησιον [gnt]
The Greek word "
judge" means to "
divide" or "
separate".
One is to "divide" or "separate" what is true and what is not true according to God's laws.
One is not to take action against others.
One may need to avoid others in certain ways who do not follow God's laws.
32. James 4:12
KJV: There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
Greek: εις εστιν ο νομοθετης και κριτης ο δυναμενος σωσαι και απολεσαι συ δε τις ει ος κρινεις ο κρινων τον ετερον πλησιον
33. James 4:13-15
James 4:13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: [kjv]
αγε νυν οι λεγοντες σημερον η αυριον πορευσομεθα εις τηνδε την πολιν και ποιησομεν εκει ενιαυτον και εμπορευσομεθα και κερδησομεν [gnt]
4:14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. [kjv]
οιτινες ουκ επιστασθε το της αυριον ποια η ζωη υμων ατμις γαρ εστε προς ολιγον φαινομενη επειτα και αφανιζομενη [gnt]

34. James 4:13
KJV: Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:

35. James 4:14
KJV: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

νυν δε καυχασθε εν ταις αλαζονειαις υμων πασα καυχησις τοιαυτη πονηρα εστιν [gnt]
The word for "
rejoice" is the Greek word for "
boast".
The word for "
boastings" is the Greek word that might be though of as being a "
know it all".
38. James 4:16
KJV: But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
Greek: νυν δε καυχασθε εν ταις αλαζονειαις υμων πασα καυχησις τοιαυτη πονηρα εστιν
39. James 4:17
James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. [kjv]
ειδοτι ουν καλον ποιειν και μη ποιουντι αμαρτια αυτω εστιν [gnt]
Is it only a sin to that person? In Matthew 18, Jesus describes a conflict resolution protocol for "
sins" that need not be against anyone in particular.
Idle silences can be considered in the same way as what James describes.
40. Anglican Church: Confession of sin
Being silent is an option taken by many. The Anglican Church has a Confession of Sin that starts as follows.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
Are we responsible for what we did not do? How about what we could have done?
As we must account for every idle word, so must we account for every idle silence. Benjamin Franklin (American scientist, inventor, philosopher, statesman)
41. James 4:17
KJV: Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
Greek: ειδοτι ουν καλον ποιειν και μη ποιουντι αμαρτια αυτω εστιν
