Matthew provides connecting commentary including the claim that the "
sheep" need a "
shepherd".
Matthew 9:36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. [kjv]

Jesus then speaks in verse 37.
9:37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; [kjv]
τοτε λεγει τοις μαθηταις αυτου ο μεν θερισμος πολυς οι δε εργαται ολιγοι [gnt]
9:38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. [kjv]
δεηθητε ουν του κυριου του θερισμου οπως εκβαλη εργατας εις τον θερισμον αυτου [gnt]
The Latin Vulgate word "valentibus" ≈ "strong" is used here and is the source of the Latin name "Valentine" meaning "strong". From Saint Valentine (there were two of them) comes the holiday known as Saint Valentine's Day.
