The rich and powerful words of the kingdom of the Goths
1. Wilfrid, the Gothic Bible, some Gothic words
The Gothic language is a Germanic language that disappeared about 500 AD, although there is some evidence that it continued to be spoken in some form in isolated places long after that time.
The Gothic character set uses a Runic alphabet. In the Unicode character encoding, the Gothic characters are above 16 bits. Thus, Python 2.7 (narrow build) and Java (default build) do not support these extended character ranges (i.e., without certain tricks).
In the verses displayed, the Gothic characters are transliterated using a somewhat standard translation. To make searching (and reading) easier, the following transformations are made.
Aether "æ" (one character) converted to "ae" (two characters).
Eth "ð" converted to "th".
Thorn "þ" converted to "th".
For most purposes, the subtle pronunciation difference between eth "
ð" and thorn "
þ" is not important here.
Mark 10:24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! [kjv]
The
TR (Textus Receptus) adds "
trust in riches" which is then found in other translations.
