A perfect end to complete perfection
1. A perfect end to complete perfection
2. Diagram
3. Complete
The original meaning of "perfect" is of being "complete" in some sense. Thus, to "perfect" a process is to complete that process, not that it is without error.
4. Verb tenses
Many languages have verbs that have a "
perfect" tense and an "
imperfect" tense (and others).
The "perfect tense" refers to an action that is "complete".
The "imperfect tense" refers to an action that is "not complete".
English example:
perfect: I have been, I have gone, I have seen, etc.
imperfect: I was, I went, I saw, etc.
5. Greek
6. James 1:4
KJV: But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
In the above verse, James wants the "
completed" actions to be without error is in not needed anything more.
One has reached a "
fixed point" when no more changes are necessary.
7. Matthew 5:48
KJV: Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
Wessex: Eornestlice beoð fulfremede. swa eowre heofenlice faeder is fulfremed.
Wycliffe: Therfore be ye parfit, as youre heuenli fadir is parfit.
The Old English word "fulfremed" ≈ "to perfect" as in to complete to and ending point.
The following notes were moved here and need reorganized.
8. Matthew 19:21 Perfect
The context is that of a rich man entering heaven from the question of the rich man and the requirement to be "
good" as in "
perfect".
Matthew 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. [kjv]
The Greek word for "
perfect" here does not mean without error (though it can mean that). It means "
complete" as in "
perfected". This may or may not mean the idea of being without error, blemish, etc.
9. Matthew 19:21
KJV: Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

12. Perfect
This advice from Jesus to be "
perfect" hearkens back to Matthew 5:48, a few verses after Matthew 5:20.
Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. [kjv]

Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. [kjv]
With the bar set at being "
perfect", the disciples have the following obvious question.
14. Matthew 5:48
KJV: Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
15. Matthew 19:25-26
Matthew 19:25 When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? [kjv]

19:26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. [kjv]

16. Matthew 19:25

20. Matthew 19:16 Good
Let us go back to the context of the previous verse for an interesting exchange of that rich young man with Jesus.
Matthew 19:16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? [kjv]
Note that the "
Good" in "
Good Master" is not in the Greek. Only the "
good" as in "
good thing" is in the Greek.
The "
Good" in "
Good Master" appears to be inferred from the next verse.
Note: There are some textual variants that do have the "
good" in "
good Master".
21. Matthew 19:16
KJV: And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
22. Matthew 19:17
Matthew 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. [kjv]
At the end of the verse is a high bar for passing the courses.
23. Matthew 19:17
KJV: And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Wessex: Ða cwaeð he. Hwaet axost þu me be gode. An god is god. soðlice gyf þu wylt on lyf becuman heald þa bebode.
24. Old English
Notice the Old English Wessex Gospels that say "
god is god" for "
God is good". This similarity is part of the confusion between "
Gospel" as the "
good word" (from the Greek) and "
God's word" where "
spell" is a term for the word as in speaking.
25. God is good
Only God is "
good". Jesus refers in other places to the "
weak" or "
sick" as "
bad" as in "
not good".
One of the common misconceptions in the world and in many churches is that people or "
good" and the "
bad" is blamed on other factors. That does not appear to be what the Bible says (and in many places).

26. John 15:11 Friends
John 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. [kjv]
It appears that one needs to make friends with the teacher, who is the adviser and dean, in order to pass. Is it possible to be friends with the teacher?
Jesus addresses this in John 15.
27. John 15:11
KJV: These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
28. John 15:12-14
29. John 15:12
KJV: This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
30. John 15:13
KJV: Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
31. John 15:14
KJV: Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
32. John 15:15
John 15:15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. [kjv]
One conclusion is that one needs to make friends with the teacher to put in a good word to the dean to pass the required courses. That friendship requires some sacrifice and hard word, not just study.
33. John 15:15
KJV: Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
34. Standards and bars
If one cannot make the standards, then there might be another way to, in this world, get by. One can change the standards. That may not work in eternity, but there are those who might do so to get by in this world.
What about the high bar or low bar issue?
What happens if everyone gets an A grade (or passes the course)?
What happens if everyone gets an F grade (or fails the course)?
Does this ever happen in college courses? Why or why not?
Does this ever happen in church teachings? Why or why not?
35. Matthew 7:21 Sheep and goats
Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. [kjv]
This reminds on of the parable of the sheep and the goats. In Matthew 7, Jesus talks about the gates (e.g., gatekeeper courses) and the students wishing to graduate from their courses.
36. Matthew 7:21
KJV: Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
