Matthew 16:21-28

Matthew 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. [kjv]

Matthew 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? [kjv]

τι γαρ ωφελειται ωφεληθησεται ανθρωπος εαν τον κοσμον ολον κερδηση την δε ψυχην αυτου ζημιωθη η τι δωσει ανθρωπος ανταλλαγμα της ψυχης αυτου [gnt]

The meaning is to "gain" the "world" and not to "game" the "world". What is the difference?

"ὠφέλιμος" ≈ "helpful, profitable, beneficial".
"ὠφελέω" ≈ "to help, to be useful, to benefit".
"ὄφελος" ≈ "furtherance, advantage, benefit, help against something".

Matthew 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? [kjv]

Consider the following.

A. How many people can actually "gain" the entire world?
B. How many people can actually "convince" the entire world of their point of view?

Claim: There are many more people in set B than in set A.

*G5623 *15 ὠφελέω (o-fel-eh'-o) : from the same as G5622; to be useful, i.e. to benefit:--advantage, better, prevail, profit.
