1 Thessalonians 1:1-10
1. 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10
2. Thessalonians
3. Thessalonica
Paul wrote several letters to the church at Thessalonica. The ancient Greek word
"Θεσσαλονίκη" ≈ "Thessalonica" comes from two Greek words.
The ancient Greek word "Θεσσᾰλός" ≈ "Thessalos", a name given to the daughter of Phillip II (father of Alexander the Great) after his victory in Thessaly - a region in northern Greece.
The ancient Greek word "νική" ≈ "victory". Later, the city was named after her for the victory there.
4. 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10
5. 1 Thessalonians 1:1 Greeting
1 Thessalonians 1:1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. [kjv]
παυλος και σιλουανος και τιμοθεος τη εκκλησια θεσσαλονικεων εν θεω πατρι και κυριω ιησου χριστω χαρις υμιν και ειρηνη [gnt]
Neither "
saints" as "
holy ones" nor "
brethren" are addressed. Just the "
church".
6. 1 Thessalonians 1:1
KJV: Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Greek: παυλος και σιλουανος και τιμοθεος τη εκκλησια θεσσαλονικεων εν θεω πατρι και κυριω ιησου χριστω χαρις υμιν και ειρηνη απο θεου πατρος ημων και κυριου ιησου χριστου
7. 1 Thessalonians 1:2 Giving thanks always
1 Thessalonians 1:2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; [kjv]
ευχαριστουμεν τω θεω παντοτε περι παντων υμων μνειαν ποιουμενοι επι των προσευχων ημων [gnt]
In general, the Greek word
"all" requires a context. This
"all" does not appear to have a context.
8. 1 Thessalonians 1:2
KJV: We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;
Greek: ευχαριστουμεν τω θεω παντοτε περι παντων υμων μνειαν υμων ποιουμενοι επι των προσευχων ημων
9. 1 Thessalonians 1:3 Remember without ceasing
1 Thessalonians 1:3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father; [kjv]
αδιαλειπτως μνημονευοντες υμων του εργου της πιστεως και του κοπου της αγαπης και της υπομονης της ελπιδος του κυριου ημων ιησου χριστου εμπροσθεν του θεου και πατρος ημων [gnt]
Do they ever stop "
remembering"?
The Greek translated as "
sight" is that of "
being before" or "
being in front of" and not just "
being there". Are they actually "
in front of" God? Is that why the
KJV (King James Version) translated the word as "
in the sight of".
10. 1 Thessalonians 1:3
KJV: Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
Greek: αδιαλειπτως μνημονευοντες υμων του εργου της πιστεως και του κοπου της αγαπης και της υπομονης της ελπιδος του κυριου ημων ιησου χριστου εμπροσθεν του θεου και πατρος ημων
11. 1 Thessalonians 1:4
1 Thessalonians 1:4 Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God. [kjv]
ειδοτες αδελφοι ηγαπημενοι υπο του θεου την εκλογην υμων [gnt]
The Greek word translated as "
knowing" is that of "
seeing" with
understanding.
What does this verse say about
"election"?
☐ The
"election" of you of God.
☐ The
"election" of God by you.
Might Paul have not written 1 Thessalonians? The idea of the
rapture of the
elect comes from chapter 4.
12. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 Rapture
1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: [kjv]
οτι αυτος ο κυριος εν κελευσματι εν φωνη αρχαγγελου και εν σαλπιγγι θεου καταβησεται απ ουρανου και οι νεκροι εν χριστω αναστησονται πρωτον [gnt]
4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. [kjv]
επειτα ημεις οι ζωντες οι περιλειπομενοι αμα συν αυτοις αρπαγησομεθα εν νεφελαις εις απαντησιν του κυριου εις αερα και ουτως παντοτε συν κυριω εσομεθα [gnt]
The English word
"harpoon" comes from a Greek word meaning
"snatching up" and is the word used for what is called the
"Rapture".
The author assumes that the
"elect" are good and not bad. Perhaps Paul did not write 1 Thessalonians.
13. 1 Thessalonians 1:4
KJV: Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.
Greek: ειδοτες αδελφοι ηγαπημενοι υπο του θεου την εκλογην υμων
14. 1 Thessalonians 1:5 Potential power
1 Thessalonians 1:5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. [kjv]
οτι το ευαγγελιον ημων ουκ εγενηθη εις υμας εν λογω μονον αλλα και εν δυναμει και εν πνευματι αγιω και εν πληροφορια πολλη καθως οιδατε οιοι εγενηθημεν υμιν δι υμας [gnt]
The Greek word translated as "
power" is that of "
potentiality" and
not "
actuality"
15. 1 Thessalonians 1:5 Information
The modern Greek word
"πληροφορίες" (plee-ro-fo-REE-ehs) ≈ "information" or
"πληροφορία" (plee-ro-fo-REE-a) ≈ "information" is the same word used in the
GNT (Greek New Testament) and which the
KJV translates as "
full assurance". How do the verses sound when updated with what we now call "
information"?
For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and as information; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. [1 Thessalonians 1:5]
16. 1 Thessalonians 1:5
KJV: For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
Greek: οτι το ευαγγελιον ημων ουκ εγενηθη εις υμας εν λογω μονον αλλα και εν δυναμει και εν πνευματι αγιω και εν πληροφορια πολλη καθως οιδατε οιοι εγενηθημεν εν υμιν δι υμας
Latin: quia evangelium nostrum non fuit ad vos in sermone tantum sed et in virtute et in Spiritu Sancto et in plenitudine multa sicut scitis quales fuerimus vobis propter vos
17. 1 Thessalonians 1:6 Mimic Paul
1 Thessalonians 1:6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost: [kjv]
και υμεις μιμηται ημων εγενηθητε και του κυριου δεξαμενοι τον λογον εν θλιψει πολλη μετα χαρας πνευματος αγιου [gnt]
The ancient Greek word
"μῖμος" ≈ "imitator, actor" and is the source of "
mime", "
imitate", etc.
The Greek translated as "
followers" is that of "
mimicking" and
not of "
following".
Does Paul want the "
followers" to "
mimic" him? How about just Jesus? Is Paul being humble here?
18. 1 Thessalonians 1:6 Affliction
What does Paul mean by "
affliction"?
19. 1 Thessalonians 1:6
KJV: And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:
Greek: και υμεις μιμηται ημων εγενηθητε και του κυριου δεξαμενοι τον λογον εν θλιψει πολλη μετα χαρας πνευματος αγιου
20. 1 Thessalonians 1:7
1 Thessalonians 1:7 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia. [kjv]
ωστε γενεσθαι υμας τυπον πασιν τοις πιστευουσιν εν τη μακεδονια και εν τη αχαια [gnt]
The ancient Greek word
"τύπος" ≈ "impression, mark" is often translated as (
passive) "
example" rather than (
active) "
impression".
The Greek translated as "
ensamples" is that of a "
type" which comes from the physical idea of a "
hit" and in the source of the English word
"type" in the sense of a printing press hitting or pressing the paper.
What did Helvetica say to Gothic?
Don't hit on me. I'm not impressed. You're not my type. Someday my prints will arrive.
21. 1 Thessalonians 1:7
KJV: So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.
Greek: ωστε γενεσθαι υμας τυπους τυπον πασιν τοις πιστευουσιν εν τη μακεδονια και εν τη αχαια
22. 1 Thessalonians 1:8
1 Thessalonians 1:8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God -ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing. [kjv]
αφ υμων γαρ εξηχηται ο λογος του κυριου ου μονον εν τη μακεδονια και αχαια αλλ εν παντι τοπω η πιστις υμων η προς τον θεον εξεληλυθεν ωστε μη χρειαν εχειν ημας λαλειν τι [gnt]
Is Paul saying that one does not need to spread the "
Good News"? Can our "
faith" be conveyed without "
speaking"?
23. 1 Thessalonians 1:8
KJV: For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God -ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.
Greek: αφ υμων γαρ εξηχηται ο λογος του κυριου ου μονον εν τη μακεδονια και αχαια αλλα και αλλ εν παντι τοπω η πιστις υμων η προς τον θεον εξεληλυθεν ωστε μη χρειαν ημας εχειν ημας λαλειν τι
24. 1 Thessalonians 1:9
1 Thessalonians 1:9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; [kjv]
αυτοι γαρ περι ημων απαγγελλουσιν οποιαν εισοδον εσχομεν προς υμας και πως επεστρεψατε προς τον θεον απο των ειδωλων δουλευειν θεω ζωντι και αληθινω [gnt]
25. 1 Thessalonians 1:9
KJV: For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
Greek: αυτοι γαρ περι ημων απαγγελλουσιν οποιαν εισοδον εχομεν εσχομεν προς υμας και πως επεστρεψατε προς τον θεον απο των ειδωλων δουλευειν θεω ζωντι και αληθινω
26. 1 Thessalonians 1:10
1 Thessalonians 1:10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come. [kjv]
και αναμενειν τον υιον αυτου εκ των ουρανων ον ηγειρεν εκ των νεκρων ιησουν τον ρυομενον ημας εκ της οργης της ερχομενης [gnt]
The Greek word translated as "
from heaven" is that of "
out of the heaven".
The Greek word translated as "
delivered" is that of "
flow from".
What is the "
wrath" to "
come"?
27. 1 Thessalonians 1:10
KJV: And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
Greek: και αναμενειν τον υιον αυτου εκ των ουρανων ον ηγειρεν εκ των νεκρων ιησουν τον ρυομενον ημας απο εκ της οργης της ερχομενης
