7. The game of cleaning both sides of the bowl
Sometimes justifying your actions with Bible verses does not work.
Verse routeMatthew 23:26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. [kjv]
Verse routeφαρισαιε τυφλε καθαρισον πρωτον το εντος του ποτηριου και της παροψιδος ινα γενηται και το εκτος αυτου καθαρον [gnt]
Verse routemundacalicisparapsidismundum [v]

The cupA bowl is somewhat like a cup. When washing dishes after making pancakes (using ground grain flour) the bowel may have dried flour on it. I have been told that although the inside of the cup is clean, the outside of the cup has gritty grain on it which is unacceptable.

I tried using the above verses to justify thoroughly cleaning the inside of the cup and not fully cleaning the outside of the bowl, but that analogy was not accepted. How can we wash the inside to be "white as snow"?

A zero-sum game is a game, from game theory, in which when one side wins, the other side loses.

21. Christ is preached
Verse routePhilippians 1:15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: [kjv]
Verse route1:16 The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: [kjv]
Verse route1:17 But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. [kjv]
Verse route1:18 What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached… [kjv]

Paul does not directly attack the other side. Instead, Paul uses double-meanings, puns, play on words, indirect scripture references, etc., to proclaim the truth.

26. Paul and competition

28. Seeking damages from zealous jealousy
Seek, zeal, damage in GreekIn Greek, the words for "seek", "zeal" and "damage" are related. The Greek "zealous" became the basis of the English word "jealous" which can be confused with the word "envy".
Here is a progression of words that developed over time in ancient Greek.

29. Philippians 1:30
 All
KJV: Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
Greek: τον αυτον αγωνα εχοντες οιον ιδετε ειδετε εν εμοι και νυν ακουετε εν εμοι

30. Zealous competition
One way to "lead" a group of men (or women) to do things with really thinking through what is being done is to create "zealous" competition for the same goal and pose that goal as a "zero-sum game".

Paul was originally led astray by the religious establishment in pursuing (persecuting) a group called the Christians in zealous competition in what was framed as a zero-sum game. Christ, on the Road to Damascus, pointed out to Paul the error of this approach.

31. Running races
Verse route1 Corinthians 9:24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. [kjv]

36. Jesus and two by two
Verse routeMark 6:7 And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; [kjv]
Verse route6:11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. [kjv]

Jesus sends out the disciples two by two. There is no indication of "zeal" nor of any "competition". If there is any opposition, or lack of acceptance, they are to move on. This is called an "island hopping" or "leapfrogging" strategy. Paul says a similar thing (omitted).

40. Island hopping strategy

During World War II, Douglas MacArthur (American military leader) and the U.S. Navy used a strategy called "island hopping" (or "leapfrogging") in the Pacific theater of action. This strategy involved taking only certain islands and leaving others to hang around, without supplies, until the end of the war.

As a Christian, one needs to (actively) witness (to the truth) and, often, (passively) go against the flow (of human thought).
