John 18:22-23 Shoot the messenger

John 18:23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me? [kjv]

απεκριθη αυτω ο ιησους ει κακως ελαλησα μαρτυρησον περι του κακου ει δε καλως τι με δερεις [gnt]

One should not shoot the messenger if one does not like the message.

Send a message from A:Alice to B:Bob using messenger C:Cary.

Removing the eye is like "shooting the messenger" who brought a message that is not desired. Or destroying your cell phone.

ταυτα δε αυτου ειποντος εις παρεστηκως των υπηρετων παρεστηκως εδωκεν ραπισμα τω ιησου ειπων ουτως αποκρινη τω αρχιερει [gnt]

The actions of the religious authorities here are of the nature of "kill the messenger" because we do not like the message, even if it is true.

11:48 Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. [kjv]

αρα μαρτυρειτε μαρτυρες εστε και συνευδοκειτε τοις εργοις των πατερων υμων οτι αυτοι μεν απεκτειναν αυτους υμεις δε οικοδομειτε αυτων τα μνημεια [gnt]

11:49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: [kjv]

δια τουτο και η σοφια του θεου ειπεν αποστελω εις αυτους προφητας και αποστολους και εξ αυτων αποκτενουσιν και εκδιωξουσιν διωξουσιν [gnt]

Throughout history, those who were killed or vilified at the time were later extolled and honored - after they were dead - with monuments, etc.

Something similar happens to artists whose art was not appreciated until long after they passed away.
