Song: Jesus loves even me
1. Song: Jesus loves even me
This is hymn #225 in the hymnal.
Key of G starting on D.
Refrain1
2. Verse 1
I am so glad that our Father in heaven
Tells of His love in the Book He has given;
Wonderful things in the Bible I see,
This is the dearest, that Jesus loves me.
3. Refrain
I am so glad that Jesus loves me,
Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me;
I am so glad that Jesus loves me,
Jesus loves even me.
4. Words: Oakey and Bliss

The words of "
Jesus loves even me", from 1870,are attributed to Emily Sullivan Oakey (1829-1883), a graduate of the Albany Female Academy. As an American educator, author and poet, she taught rhetoric, composition and foreign languages for many years, published a book of poetry and wrote the words to several hymns.
She was always frail and delicate and never was in good health during her life.
5. Music: Philip Paul Bliss
The music for "
Jesus loves even me" are by P. P. Bliss (1838-1876). Bliss was born in Clearfield County, PA and grew up an a farm. He became an itinerant music teacher, publishing his first song in 1864. In 1868 D. L. Moody told him he should be a singing (and musical) evangelist. He died in a train wreck and fire in 1876 - the centennial year of the Declaration of Independence.
6. Bliss and bless
Aside: In Old English, the word "
bless" was influenced by the word "
bliss" so that the English word "
bless" is not the same as the Greek words translated as "
bless" in the
GNT (Greek New Testament). The Greek words are:
- happy or content
- having a good word said (as in eulogy)
For more information, see:
7. Comfort and joy
Matthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. [kjv]
Does this make sense?
- Happy and/or content are those who grieve for they shall be consoled.
For more information, see:
8. Verse 2
Though I forget Him and wander away,
Still Jesus loves me wherever I stray;
Back to His dear loving arms I would flee,
When I remember that Jesus loves me.
9. Refrain
I am so glad that Jesus loves me,
Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me;
I am so glad that Jesus loves me,
Jesus loves even me.
10. Verse 3
O, if there's only one song I can sing,
When in His beauty I see the great King,
This shall my song in eternity be:
O, what a wonder that Jesus loves me!
11. Refrain
I am so glad that Jesus loves me,
Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me;
I am so glad that Jesus loves me,
Jesus loves even me.
