The hymn "Breathe on me, breath of God" was written by Englishman Edwin Hatch (1835-1889) of the Church of England. Written in 1878 and published in 1886.

It had the Latin title "spiritus Dei" ≈ "spirit of God".

Edwin Hatch is quoted as saying his faith was "as simple and unaffected as a child".
