At West Point, the months after Christmas in January until about March are known as the "gloom period".

The granite buildings are gray.
The uniforms are gray.
The fog and fallen snow are gray.
The cement walkways and formation areas are gray.
Early in the morning and at night the outside is dark and gray.

Everything is gray and gloomy. Does this cloud the issue?

Some people suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), sometimes called the "winter blues". This makes them sad, you see. Just like the Sadducees. The long hours of darkness during the winter months (in the northern hemisphere) do not help.

Might this be because of a lack of the Son? How about lack of Sun? The same play on words of "sun" and "son" can be made in German.

The German word "die Sonne" ≈ "sun".
The German word "der Sohn" ≈ "son".
