Matthew 28:1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. [kjv]

Matthew 28:2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. [kjv]

και ιδου σεισμος εγενετο μεγας αγγελος γαρ κυριου καταβας εξ ουρανου και προσελθων απεκυλισεν τον λιθον απο της θυρας και εκαθητο επανω αυτου [gnt]

Since "famines" and "plagues" are play on words, perhaps "earthquakes" is too. The ancient Greek word "σεισμός" ≈ "shaking, shock, earthquake" which is the source of the English word "seismic".

The ancient Greek word "σεισμοι" ≈ "earthquakes" is used only in this exact form in the similar verses in Matthew, Mark and Luke. It is not in the LXX (Septuagint). Aristotle uses it when discussing literal earthquakes.

If Matthew had known the play on words with the genitive singular "(of) heaven" he would not have used that word here.

Matthew 28:12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, [kjv]

και συναχθεντες μετα των πρεσβυτερων συμβουλιον τε λαβοντες αργυρια ικανα εδωκαν τοις στρατιωταις [gnt]
