John 18:23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me? [kjv]

απεκριθη αυτω ιησους ει κακως ελαλησα μαρτυρησον περι του κακου ει δε καλως τι με δερεις [gnt]

One should not shoot the messenger if one does not like the message.

Removing the eye is like "shooting the messenger" who brought a message that is not desired. Or destroying your cell phone.

The actions of the religious authorities here are of the nature of "kill the messenger" because we do not like the message, even if it is true.

αρα μαρτυρες εστε και συνευδοκειτε τοις εργοις των πατερων υμων οτι αυτοι μεν απεκτειναν αυτους υμεις δε οικοδομειτε [gnt]

11:49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: [kjv]

δια τουτο και η σοφια του θεου ειπεν αποστελω εις αυτους προφητας και αποστολους και εξ αυτων αποκτενουσιν και διωξουσιν [gnt]

Throughout history, those who were killed or vilified at the time were later extolled and honored - after they were dead - with monuments, etc.

Something similar happens to artists whose art was not appreciated until long after they passed away.
