The Greek city of Smyrna in Asia Minor is one of the church cities in Revelation in the Letters to the Seven Churches. The ancient Greek town name "Σμύρνη" ≈ "Smyrna". Today, the Turkish name for the city "Smyrna" is "Izmir" (since 1930).

The name appears to be related to "myrrh" which was a main export of the city in earlier times.

Revelation 1:11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. [kjv]

The seven letters to the seven churches of Revelation were written, from Jesus through John, to actual churches in Asia Minor (western Turkey today).

There is a larger town called Smyrna in Georgia.
